Other: The million-dollar demonstration reflected the face of a people who refused to occupy

"

The Friday Karada and Jadriya areas in the center of the capital, Baghdad, witnessed yesterday, Friday, a "millionth demonstration" called by the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada Al-Sadr, to reject the American presence in the country.

Continuing escalation .. Four protesters were killed in Baghdad and Nasiriyah

Iraqi protesters block a bridge south of Nasiriyah - 20 January 2020

A protester in Baghdad and three others were killed in the southern city of Nasiriyah by live bullets on Saturday, according to medical sources, during clashes with security forces that started in the morning to reopen streets, which raised fears of resolving the protests demanded by force.

Local media and activists reported that two people were killed and dozens of others wounded during clashes between security forces and protesters near Fahd Bridge in Nasiriyah, as the authorities tried to disperse the protesters.

Dozens of protesters have gathered for a week, near the Fahd Bridge, close to the international highway that connects Nasiriyah with Baghdad.

On Saturday, the Iraqi authorities reopened squares and streets in Baghdad and southern cities, in the wake of a large demonstration called by Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr in Baghdad to demand the exit of American forces from Iraq, and then announced that he had stopped supporting the protest demonstrations.

In Baghdad, on Saturday, protesters regained control of al-Khilani Square in central Baghdad shortly after a security force stormed it and removed some concrete barriers from one of its entrances.

Video footage broadcast by Iraqi activists on social media showed crowds of protesters arriving in al-Khilani Square, which was not present in the presence of the Iraqi security forces.

The Baghdad Operations Command announced earlier on Saturday the lifting of all the concrete blocks from Al-Khilani Square, the Al-Ahrar Bridge, the Aviation Fields, Cordoba, and the Muhammad Al-Qasim Highway.

Activists confirmed that the Iraqi security forces burned several of the protesters' tents near Al-Khilani Square after they used live bullets and tear gas canisters to confront the angry protesters.

Medical and security officials said that at least eight people were wounded when security forces fired tear gas in the Khilani Square in central Baghdad.

Iraqi rebels" accuse Sadr of treason in exchange for "Iranian promise"

The protesters accused Sadr of betraying the rebels

January 25, 2020

The protesters accused Sadr of betraying the rebels

The Coordinating Committee for the October Demonstrations in Iraq issued a strongly worded statement against the Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr, accusing him of "shame, disgrace" and "betrayal of the rebels", after the security forces broke up the Basra sit-in as soon as Sadr's supporters withdrew from it.

ON THE LINK

The sit-in was broken by force ... and scenes documenting the storming and burning of tents

In the statement directed by the protesters to al-Sadr, he said: "We did not come out with a religious fatwa and we did not come out with a pectoral tweet, so Muqtada and his supporters do not bet on the impatience of our patience and the end of our revolution.

The statement added: "Stay in the arenas until achieving the goals of the revolution, and we will not let the blood of the martyrs down and they will not be a card on the political trading table as Sadr did."

The statement concluded by saying: "What he did was shame and betrayal of the revolutionaries, and his price will be to lead the next government as promised by Iran."

The dispersal of the Basra sit-in came immediately after the withdrawal of Sadr's supporters from it, which raised doubts about his complicity or his prior knowledge of the operation, with the aim of conveying a message that his presence is the one that protects the demonstrators.

Sadr's supporters withdrew after a tweet of their leader on Friday, in which he blamed the Tahrir Square demonstrators who questioned him, considering that he was a support for them, and he said that after this he will not interfere in their affairs, neither in the negative nor in the affirmative.

Al-Sadr's tweet followed the withdrawal of his supporters, who sit in the squares in Nasiriyah, Diwaniyah, Basra, and Baghdad.

A deputy from "Saeron" talks about agreeing to a "surprising" candidate for prime minister

Iraqi demonstrators in Baghdad's Aviation Square a day before the deadline they set for the government to fulfill their demands expires

Iraqi demonstrators in Baghdad's Aviation Square a day before the deadline they set for the government to fulfill their demands expires

The "Saeron" coalition led by Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr revealed "the nomination of the candidate for prime minister by consensus between the political blocs and the president of the republic," according to the representative of the coalition, Bader Al-Ziyadi, who spoke Saturday to the Iraqi National News Agency (NINA).

When the President of the Republic, Barham Salih, returned from his visit to Italy on Saturday, the deputy said, "During the current week, he will assign a new personality and it will be surprising to everyone and far from all the figures presented in the media."

He explained that the new character "will be independent and acceptable by all, and there is agreement and agreement between the political blocs on that personality."

And Iraqi political parties are running marathon negotiations with the aim of naming a prime minister instead of resigning Adel Abdul Mahdi, without reaching an agreement so far.

During the past weeks, some names have been proposed, including the governor of Basra, Asaad Al-Eidani, Qusay al-Suhail, and Muhammad Shia'a Al-Sudani, but the protesters announced their rejection of these names as they are linked to the Iranian agenda.

The protesters gave the political blocs a deadline that expired last Monday to present an independent candidate.

Iraq’s top Shiite cleric Al-Sistani calls for formation of new government as protesters killed

Iraqi demonstrators burn tires as they block a road during ongoing anti-government protests, in Baghdad, Iraq

Updated 25 January 2020

BAGHDAD: Iraq’s leading Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani, urged Iraq’s political parties on Friday to form a new government as soon as possible, and urged authorities to respect protesters’ right to express themselves.

Al-Sistani, who delivered his message through a representative at Friday prayer in Karbala, reiterated calls to foreign powers to respect Iraq’s sovereignty.

“The formation of the new government is constitutionally long overdue, it is necessary for the various parties concerned to cooperate,” Al-Sistani said.

He admonished authorities for “procrastinating” on reform promises and parties for being “very late” in naming a successor to Premier Adel Abdul Mahdi, who has acted as caretaker since resigning in December.

Two anti-government protesters were killed in clashes with security forces in Baghdad, hours after thousands of supporters of Shiite cleric Moqtada Al-Sadr rallied separately to demand the ouster of US troops.

A vowed enemy of US troops, Al-Sadr had called for “a million-strong” rally but did not attend himself. “Get out, get out, occupier!” they chanted.

A statement read out at Al-Sadr’s rally demanded all foreign forces leave Iraq, Iraqi-American security agreements be cancelled, Iraqi airspace be closed to US military aircraft and for Trump not to act ‘arrogant.’

A statement read by his representative at the rally demanded all foreign forces leave Iraq, Iraqi-American security agreements be cancelled, Iraqi airspace be closed to US military aircraft and for President Donald Trump not to act “arrogant” when addressing Iraqi officials.

“If all this is implemented, we will deal with it as a non-occupying country — otherwise it will be considered a country hostile to Iraq,” the statement read.

Four NGO workers, three of them French nationals, were also reported missing in Baghdad, rocked since October by a youth-dominated protest movement demanding a government overhaul, early elections and more accountability.

The NGO’s director described the men as “experienced staff members who have been working with us for years” and who had “perfect knowledge of conflict zones.”

More than 470 people have died in protest-related violence since October, most of them demonstrators, and violence has spiked this week.

The Pentagon said that 34 US troops were diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries suffered in this month’s Iranian missile strike on an Iraqi air base, and that half of the troops have returned to their military duties.

Seventeen of the 34 are still under medical observation, according to Jonathan Hoffman, the chief Pentagon spokesman.

Trump had initially said he was told that no troops had been injured in the Jan. 8 strike. The military said symptoms were not immediately reported after the strike and in some cases became known days later.

Major facts about Iraq presented by the president to the world?

by Ali EjamViews and Thoughts , Iraq News2 Hours ago

Ali Abdel Amir Ajam *

In a very important speech to President Barham Saleh in front of Davos, there was recognition of a set of bitter facts about Iraq, as he is "in the eye of the storm" according to the president, and he even stressed that "no one in this room will be surprised when I say frankly: these are difficult times for Iraq" .

Switzerland-Davos-Forum.jpg?resize=940%2C529

This "shocking" confession did not come as a single allusion in Saleh's speech but rather his implicit supportive attitude to the popular protests. There is talk of admiration for peaceful demonstrators and through the following descriptions:

1

Support the idea behind the demonstrations, saying: "The protesters, most of whom are Iraqi youth, have been demonstrating in the streets for nearly four months, putting their lives on the line to demand change." They are protesting "for a better life, a homeland, more jobs, better services and an end to the corruption that paralyzed our country long ago." I want the same for them. ”

2

The total inconsistency with all the accusations leveled by Iraqi officials in the government and parliament, not to mention most of the leaders of armed groups that the demonstrators are carrying out “external agendas”.

3

Even the American-Iranian clash that put Iraq in the eye of the storm, he had a clear position on the protesting youth expressed by Saleh in the urgent need to keep the country away from this conflict. From the cities, which started about four months ago. ”

4

His praise of the demonstrators for reviving the idea of Iraqi patriotism, which almost 14 years of sectarianism had said, "They want Iraqi patriotism to be comprehensive, and not divided according to sectarian identity."

5

The young demonstrators are hopefully healthy for the Iraqi "democracy". They want a democratic political system that reflects their collective identity and restores their dignity. They want free and fair elections. ”

6

The President's clear condemnation of the brutal and widespread violence practiced by the Iraqi authorities against the demonstrators "It is devastating and painful that the violence committed by outlaws has killed more than 600 innocent peaceful demonstrators." This reveals the presence of more powerful authorities than the Iraqi state that says its word. Rather, it appears to be a distress before the world. If they save Iraq from the killers of its sons, we are not able to!

Six facts provide six reasons for the president to be attacked or even threatened by outlaw armed groups, and the brave are always subject to attack and threat.

It is noteworthy that the Prime Minister and all the elements of his government did not provide a protest against the threats against President Saleh, and the positions supporting him came from prominent political figures outside the government, as did the leader of the Sadrist movement Muqtada Al-Sadr who stressed that the President of the Republic is "the protector of the constitution and the protector of the revolutionaries", but rather He, according to his spokesman, added this to the fact that Barham Salih "re-considered the position of the presidency and at the expense of the authority of the parties."

Here there was an urgent need to deter outlawed Shiite armed groups, and no one is as capable of such deterrence as the Sadrist leader provides.

IRAQ SECURITY FORCES CLASH WITH PROTESTERS IN BAGHDAD, OTHER CITIES

SULAIMANI — Iraqi security forces fired teargas and live bullets in renewed clashes with protesters in Baghdad and other cities on Sunday (January 26), a Reuters witness and security sources said, following a push to clear a sit-in camps across the country.

Demonstrators are demanding the removal of what they see as a corrupt ruling elite and an end to foreign interference in domestic politics, especially by Iran, which has come to dominate state institutions since the toppling of Saddam Hussein in a 2003 US-led invasion.

Iraqi populist cleric Moqtada al-Sadr called for demonstrations against the US Embassy in Baghdad on Sunday and in other cities.

This followed a large march on Friday in which tens of thousands protested against the US military presence in Iraq.

Protesters on Sunday threw petrol bombs and stones at security forces which responded by firing tear gas canisters and live rounds into the air.

The authorities’ latest attempt to push back protesters and restore order came after Sadr, who has millions of supporters in Baghdad and the south, said on Saturday he would end his involvement in anti-government unrest.

“We protest because we have a cause, I don’t think Moqtada Sadr or any other politician will change our mind,” said a protester in Baghdad who declined to give his name.

Sadr’s supporters had bolstered the protesters and sometimes helped shield them from attacks by security forces and unidentified gunmen, but began withdrawing from sit-in camps on Saturday following his announcement.

Security forces then removed concrete barriers near Baghdad’s Tahrir Square, where demonstrators have camped out for months, and across at least one main bridge over the Tigris River.

“I don’t go to protests often but I came out today because of what they did yesterday, I want to express my solidarity with my brothers in Tahrir,” said Hussain Ali, a student.

Protesters in the capital were coughing and washing their faces and eyes to rid themselves of the effects of the gas while Iraqi Red Cross workers provided first aid, as the site was inaccessible to ambulances, a Reuters reporter said.

At least 14 protesters were injured in the clashes in the capital, security and medical sources said.

Tuk tuks evacuated wounded protesters in clouds of tear gas and black smoke from burning tires.

Earlier on Sunday, hundreds of university students gathered in Tahrir square, the main protest camp, chanting slogans against the US and Iran.

UNREST IN THE SOUTH

Clashes with security forces in the southern city of Nassiriya left at least 17 protesters wounded, four of them by live bullets, police and medical sources said.

Protesters set fire to two security vehicles in the city center and as hundreds of other demonstrators controlled the key bridges in the city, a Reuters witness said.

In the southern city of Basra, more than 2000 students from different universities pooled into the protest camp, another Reuters witness said.

Protests also continued in the cities of Kerbala, Najaf, and Diwaniya in defiance to attempts by security forces to end their months-long sit-in, police sources and Reuters witnesses said.

The unrest resumed last week after a lull of several weeks, following US air strikes that killed Iranian Major-General Qassem Soleimani and an Iraqi militia commander.

The killing of Soleimani, to which Iran responded by ballistic missile attacks on two Iraqi military bases, has revived tensions in Iraq’s domestic politics and delayed the formation of a new government.

More Iraqi protesters dead as crackdown intensifies, Sadr withdraws support

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Iraqi security forces torched make-shift tents of protesters in Baghdad and other southern cities on Saturday, firing live rounds and tear gas canisters that reportedly killed at least seven demonstrators and injured dozens more, sources said the following day.

Security and medical sources told Kurdistan 24 that four protesters were killed by gunfire in Baghdad and three in the southern city of Nasiriyah. Multiple additional participants were wounded while preventing riot police from raiding their camps.

Iraqi security forces have killed upwards of 600 protesters since they first took to the streets in early October to demand a better standard of living and an end to institutional corruption, according to an Amnesty International report. Tens of thousands of others have been reported wounded by multiple sources. Iranian-backed militias have been accused of carrying out part of the violence, targeting demonstrators and activists with sniper rifles and carrying out targeted assassinations.

The new attacks came as part of a campaign to disperse protesters who had shut down some essential streets after self-styled nationalist and influential cleric Muqtada al-Sadr withdrew his support from the protests after apparent warming of ties between him and rival Tehran-aligned militias.

After Sadr’s proclamation, security forces began removing concrete barriers surrounding central Baghdad's Tahrir Square—the epicenter of the protests since they began—in an apparent move to quash the demonstrations.

However, thousands more people joined the scene, compelling the security forces to retreat. Videos posted on social media showed crowds gathered in the area, singing and chanting slogans of reform.

Protesters also criticized senior politicians seen as close Iran including former prime minister Nouri Maliki as well as leaders of militia units such as Hadi al-Amiri, Qais Khazali, and Sadr—who had for months shown his ostensible support for the protest movement.

Baghdad / news

The head of the Salvation and Development Front, headed by Osama Al-Nujaifi, called on the government to declare its inability to protect the demonstrators if it does not reveal who is targeting them.

Al-Nujaifi said in a tweet on "Twitter", "It is in the interest of those who push the country towards aggravation and the slippery of discord, internal and external confrontation? There is no convincing government account of what is happening targeting the peaceful demonstrators. Four months ago we have counted martyrs and wounded of our angry youth without accountability." .

He added that "the perpetrators or the end of the massacres against them ... the government must address this, or declare its inability to protect the demonstrators, and reveal the party that targets them, or political and social forces will not be forced to demand international protection for the people."

He continued, "The parties of the authority must understand the dangers facing the country and leave the way for the president to assign a suitable figure to head a transitional government that meets the aspirations of the demonstrators and undertakes the required reforms."
