Iraqi Foreign Ministry: The authorities are opening an investigation into the attack on the American embassy

January 27, 2020

The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Monday that the security authorities have begun investigation procedures to uncover the rocket launchers towards the American embassy in Baghdad on Sunday.

The ministry denounced, through its spokesperson, Ahmed Al-Sahaf, in tweets via Twitter, "The aggression," which targeted the United States embassy by bombing "Katyusia" missiles, noting that this violence was legally and customarily condemned.

She stressed Iraq’s keenness to maintain "the sanctity of all diplomatic missions" operating in the country, stressing that such actions "affect the level of strategic relations between Baghdad and Washington."

And the ministry warned of the repetition of such violations that could "drag Iraq into a battlefield for external parties."

Three of the five rockets that targeted the Green Zone in central Baghdad on Sunday evening landed right inside the campus of the American embassy, and one hit the restaurant at dinner time, according to a security source told AFP.

At least one person was injured by the missiles.

The American diplomatic mission has been subjected to several missile attacks in recent months, and this is the second attack in a week.

Although this is the first time that a direct hit has been announced, a US official told France Press that the missiles targeting the US embassy on January 21 "landed near the deputy ambassador's house."

In a statement, the resigned Iraqi Prime Minister, Adel Abdul Mahdi, condemned "the fall of a number of Katyusha rockets inside the campus of the American embassy."

He added, "We deplore the continuation of these condemned and outlaw acts that weaken the state and violate its sovereignty and the sanctity of the diplomatic missions on its soil."

Abdul-Mahdi described the firing of the missiles as a "unilateral, not responsible" act, which "could drag Iraq into a battlefield, especially at a time when the government started measures to implement the House’s decision to withdraw foreign forces from the country."

The Iraqi parliament held a session on the fifth of January, in which it voted on the government's mandate to end the presence of foreign forces in the country, including about 5,200 American soldiers.

This came in an angry response to the United States killing Qassem Soleimani, commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, and deputy head of the Popular Mobilization Organization, Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, with bombing from a drone in Baghdad.

A dozen of protesters have been killed in Iraq in the past two days, while hundreds were injured, Iraq's High Commission of Human Rights confirmed on Sunday.
The commission further explained that nine protesters were killed in capital Baghdad, while three others were left dead in the southern city of Nasiriyah.
Moreover, 230 people were also injured, including demonstrators and security personnel, the statement added, noting that 118 of them were registered in Baghdad and the rest were in Dhi Qar and Basra provinces.
The security forces, in the meantime, have arrested a total of 89 protesters in Baghdad and Basra during the past 48 hours, according to the press release.
After Iraqi powerful Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr announced on Saturday that he would halt his support to the anti-government protests, the security forces raided the camps of the demonstrators in separate areas across Iraq, intensifying their efforts to end the demonstrations.
Iraq has been rocked by mass protests since early October, over 600 protesters have so far been killed and more than 25,000 others suffered injuries.

It could take place right after the impeachment trial is over in the Senate. That’s a bump that needs the crossed over before more names and faces are checked off.

Khazali said in a tweet seen by (the information) that it is "in fulfillment of the rightful demands of our people and in order to break the people’s conflict and end the controversy and thwart the project of sedition, we believe that the conditions of the next prime minister must be independent and not belong to any political party and has a successful management experience."

Do condemnations of violence against demonstrators return Iraq to international sanctions?

Baghdad / Obelisk: Legal expert, Ali al-Tamimi, on Tuesday 28 January 2019, explained the meaning of 16 countries' condemnation of excessive violence against demonstrators, indicating that this marks the gradual start of international sanctions.

Al-Tamimi said in a statement to Al-Masalla, that the condemnation of 16 constitutes a gradual start to international sanctions with the presence of 3 countries, including permanent members of the Security Council and others in the European Union, which is considered a pressure on the United Nations to raise the matter to the Security Council, considering that the violence violates Articles 2 and 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 22 of the International Covenant Charter signed by Iraq.

Clear: Continuing with this repression, especially after condemnation from Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and Iraq, exposes Iraq to the sanctions stipulated in Articles 39 to 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, which begin with an ultimatum and end with international guardianship.

Al-Tamimi indicated that these crimes do not fall under the statute of limitations and do not absolve the chiefs from criminal responsibility in accordance with articles 48 of the Penal Code, 24 of the Military Penal Code and 52 of the Law on Internal Security Forces and do not fall out of statute of limitations or the lapse of time according to Article 28 of the International Criminal Court Law, indicating that this is considered Genocide in accordance with the 1948 Genocide Prevention Agreement signed by Iraq, in addition to the attack on embassies, in accordance with the 1961 diplomatic relations and embassy protection agreement.

Canada, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States on Monday issued a joint statement on the excessive and deadly use of demonstrators in Iraq.

The series of assassinations in Iraq ... Masked men kill a retired general and university professor

The assassination of a retired brigadier general in an armed attack

The assassination of a retired brigadier general in an armed attack

Since the outbreak of demonstrations in Iraq, and the wave of assassinations and kidnappings of political activists, is increasing continuously, the last of which is today, a medical source announced the assassination of Dr. Muhammad Hussein Alwan, Professor of the Faculty of Education, Al-Mustansiriya University by armed groups in the banking area, and he was transferred to forensic medicine at the Canadian Hospital.

Assassinations have become an obsession threatening political activists, and they are liquidated when they leave the field and go to the house at the hands of masked persons, as happened with the young man Fahim al-Taie, who was assassinated last December in Karbala, because of a post on Facebook.

These assassinations come amid a government silence, which confirms that the perpetrator is unknown, and that the perpetrators will be pursued, but with few results, while the demonstrators confirm that the militias supported by Iran are the culprit, and that the bullets of their elements are chasing activists to put down their movements.

According to the Iraqi Commission for Human Rights, the number of assassination attempts at the beginning of January was 33, in which 14 activists were killed and 19 others were injured.

Dean's assassination

In a related context, a security source reported that an officer with the rank of retired brigadier general had been assassinated within the affiliated societies of the Al-Dora area.

The source confirmed that unknown gunmen opened fire with their silent weapons at the officer, which resulted in his death on the spot, indicating that a security force cordoned off the scene of the accident, and transferred the body to forensic medicine.

The protesters accused Sadr of betraying the rebels

The Coordinating Committee for the October Demonstrations in Iraq issued a strongly worded statement against the Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr, accusing him of "shame, disgrace" and "betrayal of the rebels", after the security forces broke up the Basra sit-in as soon as Sadr's supporters withdrew from it.

ON THE LINK

The sit-in was broken by force ... and scenes documenting the storming and burning of tents

In the statement directed by the protesters to al-Sadr, he said: "We did not come out with a religious fatwa and we did not come out with a pectoral tweet, so Muqtada and his supporters do not bet on the impatience of our patience and the end of our revolution.

The statement added: "Stay in the arenas until achieving the goals of the revolution, and we will not let the blood of the martyrs down and they will not be a card on the political trading table as Sadr did."

The statement concluded by saying: "What he did was shame and betrayal of the revolutionaries, and his price will be to lead the next government as promised by Iran."

The dispersal of the Basra sit-in came immediately after the withdrawal of Sadr's supporters from it, which raised doubts about his complicity or his prior knowledge of the operation, with the aim of conveying a message that his presence is the one that protects the demonstrators.

Sadr's supporters withdrew after a tweet of their leader on Friday, in which he blamed the Tahrir Square demonstrators who questioned him, considering that he was a support system" rel="">support for them, and he said that after this he will not interfere in their affairs, neither in the negative nor in the affirmative.

Al-Sadr's tweet followed the withdrawal of his supporters, who sit in the squares in Nasiriyah, Diwaniyah, Basra, and Baghdad.

I have no doubt it will happen fast and furious, and it won’t be announced ahead of time either, Iran has gotten away with enough crap and pay back is just around the corner imo.
