Source: the post of Prime Minister will be decided within two weeks

Baghdad / Al-Ghad Press:

An informed parliamentary source confirmed today, Friday, that the position of the Prime Minister will be decided in the next two weeks.

The source said to "Al-Ghad Press" that "the political blocs have come close to uniting views on the issue of electing the Prime Minister," noting that "the next two weeks will see the appointment of a candidate."

And the source indicated that "there are many candidates who are on the table of political blocs to take over the position, most notably Abdul-Ghani Al-Asadi."

"There is a political line that calls for renewing confidence in Abdel Mahdi to work on implementing the Chinese agreement," he said, adding that he "did not get the opportunity to explain his work to the citizens of the country."

IRAQI PROTESTERS RALLY IN ATTEMPT TO RECAPTURE MOMENTUM

In Baghdad, southern provinces
Iraqi demonstrators participate in anti-government protests in Baghdad on December 27, 2019 (Thaier al-Sudani/Reuters)

SULAIMANI — People flocked to Tahrir Square in central Baghdad on Friday (January 10) in response to calls for large demonstrations to mark the passage of 100 days since the beginning of an anti-government uprising at the beginning of October.

The protests initially focused on bread-and-butter issues like unemployment, corruption, and poor public services, but quickly grew into larger calls for systemic change and for the government to step down. The protest movement quickly spread to the southern provinces as well.

Protesters have also strongly spoken out against foreign interference in Iraqi affairs, particularly by Iran and the United States.

Around 500 people have been killed in the government’s attempted crackdown and an estimated 17,000 wounded. The security forces and outside armed groups have used live bullets, sniper fire, tear gas, and sound grenades against protesters and burned down their protest camps in an attempt to drive them from the squares that they occupy in Baghdad and provincial capitals.

Human rights groups have extensively documented their use of military-grade tear gas canisters, shot directly at the heads and torsos of the demonstrators, causing horrific injuries.

Activists and ordinary protesters have also been subjected to a “campaign of terror,” where militias and the security forces have singled them out for abductionand targeted killings.

The protests forced Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi to offer his resignation to the Council of Representatives at the begging of December. However, he remains in office in a caretaker capacity, with President Barham Salih and several major Shia parties unable to agreeabout how to proceed.

Beyond government paralysis, protesters have also had to contend with rapidly escalating tensions between the US and Iran with Iraqis caught in the middle.

The demonstrations on Friday are designed to reinvigorate the protests after attention was deflected by squabbling between the parties and hostility between Washington and Tehran. To organizers, it represents an opportunity to reassert their demands for the government to step down, new elections to be held, and Iraq to reassert its sovereignty.

In Basra, protesters gathered on Friday morning saying that they were marching to mourn those who had been killed during the protests and to continue to pressure the government to step down.

As has been a hallmark of the protests, the Iraqi flag was prominently displayed in a sign of national unity, sovereignty, and anti-sectarianism.

Protesters also gathered in Nasiriya, which has seen extreme violence used against demonstrators resulting in the deaths of dozens there, and in Kut.

Baghdad - news

Today, Friday, the Saaron Ra’ad Al-Maksousi Alliance MP confirmed the continued insistence of some major parties to share positions despite the security situation, protests on the political class and the overall situation in Iraq.

Al-Maksousi told Al-Akhbaria that "some of the major parties still insist on their shares of positions," noting that "there are those who believe that the position of prime minister is a share of a particular component."

He added: "These parties have not abandoned the old thinking that the protesters reject and reject in the arenas of protest," noting that "a coalition of marching leaders with parliamentary blocs and parties, still believes in the homeland before the gains, and will stand against all attempts to pass candidates rejected by the Iraqi people."

Go Iraq citizen protesters. Wait for the GOI to meet, then peacefully walk into the Green Zone. It's fairly easy, apparently, as Iran militias were able to access the Green Zone last week with no obstacles. Bring extra shoes, and exact the beat down those do-nothing politicians deserve.

These crooks still don’t get it, Mahdi will not be the PM. al Sadr is saying 15 days,  my question is why is it taking two weeks. The protesters gave them 4 days an here we are, nothing.
I’m thinking if the protesters don’t step it up an get their momentum back, things will start to return to the old way again....

The idea of Mahdi and Sadr making up the rules as they go along gives credibility to reports that Suleimani was in Iraq to plan a coup. These guys have no intention of stepping aside or placating the protesters. Change will only happen under threat of violence, and may require US involvement when they refuse to comply with their own constitution.

The good news is the regime backing them has revealed themselves to be the most incompetent group of terrorists since the failed underwear bomber.
