Interesting in that after 3 months of citizen protests they haven't managed to 'breach' the Green Zone to get to GOI and Parliament, but they walk right in to the US Embassy. Spineless Iraqi military and politicians, all Iranian puppets. But no protests when Iranian militia bombs targeted the Embassy, killing and wounding Americans and Iraqis. Pathetic.

President Donald Trump has blamed Iran for bombing a coalition base and orchestrating the storming of the US Embassy in Baghdad, as Iraqis rage at American airstrikes on militias in the country.

“Iran killed an another site, wounding many,” the president tweeted on Tuesday. “We strongly responded, and always will. Now Iran is orchestrating an attack on the US Embassy in Iraq. They will be held fully responsible.”

Iran killed an another site, wounding many. We strongly responded, and always will. Now Iran is orchestrating an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Iraq. They will be held fully responsible. In addition, we expect Iraq to use its forces to protect the Embassy, and so notified!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 31, 2019

A rocket attack on a coalition base near Kirkuk last week killed one another site and wounded several US troops. Though no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, the US blamed the Iranian-backed Kataib Hezbollah militia, and struck back on Sunday. The retaliatory airstrikes pounded three Kataib Hezbollah targets in Qaim, western Iraq, and two in Syria. At least 25 fighters were killed in the airstrikes, the militia group has claimed.

The strikes were condemned by Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, who called them a violation of sovereignty and threatened “grave consequences.” Tehran called them an “act of terrorism,” while a number of Shia clerics and militia leaders joined in the condemnation.

As official denunciations flowed in, dozens of protesters stormed the heavily fortified US Embassy in Baghdad on Tuesday, chanting “death to America” and waving Hezbollah flags. Fire was seen in one part of the compound, and gunfire was reported at the scene. The US envoy to Iraq, Matthew H. Tueller, was evacuated from the area, Reuters reported.

Iran has denied ordering attacks on US troops in Iraq, and is not known to be behind the embassy protests.

In criticizing the US airstrikes, Mahdi accused Washington of acting out its own anti-Iran agenda on Iraqi soil. The country’s National Security Council added that policing its military bases is the sole responsibility of the Iraqi armed forces, not the US.

Controlling militias like Kataib Hezbollah and its allies in the ‘Popular Mobilization Forces’ has proven difficult for Mahdi’s government though. Officially sanctioned to fight Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) forces in 2014, elements of these militia groups have resisted being brought under the Iraqi military’s command, leaving Mahdi condemning both the militias’ actions and the US’ response.

Though Mahdi urged protesters to stay away from the embassy, Trump added on Tuesday that “we expect Iraq to use its forces to protect the Embassy, and so notified!”

Agreed KB......don't have a good feeling about where this is headed. I would like to think this is just another red flag event to take people's attention off the forthcoming DOJ findings and indictments but it may be more than that. Time will tell.

Whoa. THERE'S a show of Iraq military might. All those guys in black!!  What are they going to do, fist fight the protesters??  Hundreds of protesters vs. 18 guys with ball point pens?? Its a farce.

So the parliament wants a definitive decision against US interests protecting themselves. How about, US Prez DJT pulls all US currency used in the currency auctions and let Iraq fend for itself?? Time to quit hand feeding these idiotic, spineless ingrates. IMO.

KB for PM ???  Throwing my hat in the ring.

Or better yet. Give the resurgent ISIS a US military escort to the GOI base in the Green Zone. You don't protect us, we don't protect you. Once ISIS cleans out the GOI, then go in and wipe them out. Problem solved.

Trump blames Iran for attack on embassy in Baghdad as Iraqi PM urges calm

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – President Donald Trump has accused Iran of “orchestrating an attack” on the US embassy in Baghdad by angered pro-Tehran-backed militia supporters, while outgoing Iraqi prime minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi called on militiamen and their supporters to halt any ‘aggression or harassment’ of the compound.

Thousands of protesters marched through the streets of Baghdad on Tuesday afternoon, angered by Sunday’s US force airstrike on locations of Kataib Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militia. At least twenty-nine militiamen were killed in strikes near al-Qaim, western Iraq.

Angered protesters stormed the US embassy in Baghdad on Tuesday afternoon, burning tyres and reaching within meters of the embassy compound. US marines responded by firing tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the protesters.

Several prominent militia leaders loyal to Iran, including Abu Hamdi al-Muhandis, Hadi al-Ameri and Qais al-Khazali were among the militiamen and their supporters who breached the Green Zone on their way to the US embassy.

“Iran killed an another site, wounding many. We strongly responded, and always will,” President Donald Trump tweeted on Tuesday afternoon local time.  “Now, Iran is orchestrating an attack on the US Embassy in Iraq. They will be held fully responsible. In addition, we expect Iraq to use its forces to protect the Embassy, and so notified!”

The five locations targeted by Sunday’s airstrikes were weapon storage facilities and Command and Control locations in Iraq and Syria. Washington said the strikes were a response to a December 27 attack on K-1 base near Kirkuk which killed one US civil contractor, and wounded a number of American and Iraqi soldiers.

The Iraqi government, the clerical establishment, and Shiite militia forces have condemned the attack, with some voices calling for the expulsion of the American soldiers.

“We kicked the Americans out by force but the Americans find an excuse , they get out of the door but re-enter through the window. We will not leave this issue and we will consult with other resistance groups,” Abu Alaa al-Walai of the Kata'ib Sayyid al-Shuhada militia told Rudaw outside the US embassy on Tuesday.

“We will have a response, this is not like previous occasions, without a doubt, our response will be a military response and we will avenge the martyrs.”

Three months earlier, al-Walai - a staunch Iranian ally – warned of the precarity of American soldier presence in Iraq.

“I say it loud and clear that the Americans are POWs on suspended sentences, they are hostages on a suspended sentence, if a war breaks out, the Americans will definitely be taken hostage by the resistance factions,” he said.

Prime Minister Abdul-Mahdi on Tuesday declared three days of mourning for the Kataib Hezbollah fighters and called on protesters to leave the US embassy.

"We ask everyone to immediately leave these places," Abdul-Mahdi said. "Any aggression or harassment of foreign embassies and representatives is an act that is strictly prohibited by the security forces and will be punished by law with the most severe penalties."

The US ambassador and other staff have been evacuated from the embassy in the Iraqi capital Baghdad as protests rage outside, two Iraqi Foreign Ministry officials told Reuters on Tuesday.

Peter Stano, European Union spokesperson for external affairs called on Iraqi authorities to protect diplomatic missions in Iraq.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Protesters in Iraq stormed the US Embassy in Baghdad on Tuesday and attempted to break into the building in retaliation for a US strike against Iran-backed militias in Iraq, sources in the area told Kurdistan 24.

Footage from the scene showed thousands gathered around the US Embassy, waving Iraqi and Hashd al-Shaabi flags and chanting “Death to America!” slogans in opposition to America’s presence in the country.

Sources in the area reported that the crowd had also burned an American flag.

The incident comes after the US launched five strikes on Sunday against facilities belonging to the Iraqi militia, Kata’ib Hizbollah, as it charged that the Iranian-backed militia was behind a lethal attack on K-1, an Iraqi military base outside Kirkuk.

In what appeared to be a retaliatory strike, an Iraqi Interior Ministry official said four Katyusha rockets hit the al-Taji military base – located about 30 kilometers (18 miles) from the Iraqi capital of Baghdad – which houses American troops, hours after the US strikes.

The developments occur amid ongoing anti-government protests in central and southern parts of Iraq that have left over 500 people dead and scores more injured, leading to the resignation of Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi.

On Monday, the Iraqi government condemnedthe US operation, describing it as “an unacceptable vicious assault that will have dangerous consequences.”

Similarly, influential Iraqi Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr warned against the consequences of throwing Iraq into the escalating conflict between the United States and Iran, which stems from Tehran’s continued violations of the 2015 nuclear accord.

Trump Urges Iraq to “Use Its Forces” to Protect US Embassy

Trump Urges Iraq to “Use Its Forces” to Protect US Embassy

ERBIL — US President Donald Trump has urged the Iraqi government to use its forces to protect the US embassy against a wave of pro-Iran Hashd al-Shaabi supporters.

Trump said Iran was behind today’s incidents outside the US embassy in Baghdad’s Green Zone, and that Tehran was to be held responsible for any harm to the compound.

Hundreds of angry members and supports of Hashd al-Shaabi stormed the outside gates of the US embassy earlier today and reportedly set one checkpoint on fire while attempting to enter the compound.

They were protesting the recent US airstrikes which targeted multiple positions of Kataib Hezbollah and killed dozens of senior militiamen.

“Iran killed an another site, wounding many. We strongly responded, and always will. Now Iran is orchestrating an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Iraq. They will be held fully responsible,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

“In addition, we expect Iraq to use its forces to protect the Embassy, and so notified!,” he added.

MILITIA SUPPORTERS MARCH ON US EMBASSY IN BAGHDAD TO CONDEMN DEADLY AIRSTRIKES ON IRANIAN-BACKED PARAMILITARY

SULAIMANI — Militia supporters marched on the US embassy in Baghdad on Tuesday (December 31) in the Iraqi capital’s heavily fortified Green Zone, throwing stones and lighting fires at the gates.

A number of the participants had attended a funeral service for the victims killed in American airstrikes on Sunday that killed at least 25 members of Iranian-backed paramilitary group Kataib Hezbollah and wounded more than 50 others.

The marchers carried Iraqi flags and banners belonging to the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), of which Kataib Hezbollah is a part. Many demanded the expulsion of US forces from the country and the preservation of Iraqi sovereignty.

Some threw stones at the gate while others chanted, “No, no, America! ... No, no, Trump!” Iraqi special forces were deployed around the main gate to prevent them entering the embassy, according to Reuters.

Two Iraqi militiamen were wounded after stun grenades were thrown, apparently from inside the embassy compound, to force protesters to disperse, a Reuters witness said.

Blood could be seen on the face of one militiamen and on the stomach of the other as their colleagues carried them away from the scene, the witness said.

Several hours after the incident began, caretaker Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi called on the crowd to disperse.

“Iraqi security forces will respond to any act of aggression or harassment against foreign embassies in Iraq, and those responsible will face the full force of the law,” his office said in a tweet.

US President Donald Trump blamed Iran in a tweet for the tense situation at the embassy and called on Iraqi authorizes to ensure that the facility was protected.

“Iran killed an another site, wounding many. We strongly responded, and always will. Now Iran is orchestrating an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Iraq. They will be held fully responsible,” he tweeted.

“In addition, we expect Iraq to use its forces to protect the Embassy, and so notified!”

Iraqi security forces fired a small amount of teargas to disperse the crowd and militia forces, using loud speakers, urged it to disperse, a Reuters witness said.

Photos showed that Fateh Alliance leader Hadi al-Amri, Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq leader Qais Al Khazali, and Kataib Hezbollah commander Abu Mahdi al-Mohandes were in the crowd. All are prominent Shia politicians with close ties to or direct involvement in the PMF.

“Americans are unwanted in Iraq. They are a source of evil and we want them to leave,” Khazali told Reuters.

For the last three months, Iraqis have been protesting across the Tigris River, blocked by the security forces from entering the Green Zone, where numerous government ministries and foreign embassies are located. Despite several attempts to occupy the bridges leading to that part of the capital, the protesters were never allowed to enter.

Those protests are separate from the events in the Green Zone on Tuesday, with protest leaders vocally rejecting the involvement from PMF members.

On Tuesday afternoon, protesters in Tahrir Square released a statement explicitly distancing themselves from the events at the embassy.

Nearly 500 people have died and 17,000 people have been wounded since the protests began on October 1.

The US Embassy In Baghdad Cost A Staggering $750 Million [PHOTOS]

US Baghdad Embassy In Iraq
REUTERS/Lucas Jackson Ten years ago this week, Americans woke up to learn that the United States had invaded Iraq.

They had been told it would cost $50 billion and that it would end soon.

Forty-two days later the President declared Mission Accomplished, and that the U.S. would be greeted as liberators

That all didn't work out as planned.

What did work out was a luxurious compound in the heart of Baghdad on the banks of the Tigris where the thousands of Americans who would remain behind could work, shop, eat, and relax in a palatial, $750 million embassy

Here's the Chancellery Building — located at the intersection of "Broadway" and "Main Street" within the compound.

Notice anything different about THESE protesters and the ones in the middle of Baghdad?? None of their faces are covered. They're proud of what they're doing. And there's no worry about being targeted by police because there won't be any repercussions, jail time. So, hey, let's go attack this golf cart!!  Fools.

As bad as this is . Much around the world is in hope and need of Iraqs susscess . This foolishness does not have the full weight of the Iraq protesters behind it . There would be thousands upon thousands inside the Embassy . I think the embassy will be cleaned up and restored quickly . Followed by persecution against the militia supporters . Progress will continue

Trying to see all sides to this. It's not good, either way. DJT should have given the Iraq GOI and PM a timeline to initiate action themselves, first. Iran militias are in Iraq, free to roam and do as they please and there's no accountability. Militia snipers took down hundreds of protesters, at Iran's urging and Iraq's acceptance. Yet they are still there, still killing innocents, imposing Iran's will on their neighbors. Iraq, you can't walk the fence forever. Sooner or later, decide who you are and what you will become.  None of this is good for our investment happening in the near future. Sorry to say.

Iran Hostage Crisis

https://www.history.com/topics/middle-east/iran-hostage-crisis

On November 4, 1979, a group of Iranian students stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking more than 60 American hostages. The immediate cause of this action was President Jimmy Carter’s decision to allow Iran’s deposed Shah, a pro-Western autocrat who had been expelled from his country some months before, to come to the United States for cancer treatment. However, the hostage-taking was about more than the Shah’s medical care: it was a dramatic way for the student revolutionaries to declare a break with Iran’s past and an end to American interference in its affairs. It was also a way to raise the intra- and international profile of the revolution’s leader, the anti-American cleric Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
