PMF CALLS IN SUPPORTERS TO WITHDRAW FROM US EMBASSY IN BAGHDAD

Out of respect for government’s stance
Supporters of hashd al-Shaabi are withdrawing from US Embassy in Baghdad, January 1, 2020.

SULAIMANI — The Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) on Wednesday (January 1) told its supporters camped outside the US embassy in Baghdad to withdraw.

“Out of respect for the decision of the Iraqi government, we call on our supporters to end their protests in front of the US embassy in Baghdad and withdraw from the area,” the PMF said in a statement.

The PMF, also known as the Hashd al-Shaabi, said that its message had been delivered to the US. Some supporters then began leaving the area, packing up the tents, mattresses, and cooking equipment that they had brought in to signal that they intended to stay longer. Others remained in the area as of mid-afternoon.

Crowds had rallied on Tuesday to condemn deadly US air strikes on militia bases, setting fires, throwing rocks, and smashing surveillance cameras. They did not breach the huge embassy’s main compound, however.

Following Tuesday’s violence, federal government officials called for the militia supporters to withdraw and reaffirmed their responsibility for protecting diplomatic facilities.

The situation had appeared set to continue for a second full day as a crowd gathered on Wednesday morning, facing off against a heavy security presence from elite Iraq military units.

Senior Iraqi army officers had negotiated with those gathered outside the embassy in an attempt to convince them to leave, but failed to do so.

Washington had put pressure on Iraqi leaders to ensure the security of its staff.

The incident marked a sharp escalation of the proxy conflict between Washington and Tehran - both influential players in Iraq - while mass protests are challenging Iraq’s own political system nearly 17 years after the US invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

Rouhani: We are ready to negotiate with the United States if it admits its mistake

{International: Al Furat News} Iranian President Hassan Rouhani expressed his country's readiness to negotiate with the United States if the latter retracts its anti-Tehran stances.
Rouhani said, during the opening of the second complex of Ardabil International Airport in the northwest of the country: "We are ready to negotiate, when they return to the starting point, Iran is ready," according to the Iranian Islamic Republic agency, "IRNA."

He added: "The United States of America developed conspiracies against our countries to defeat the greatness of Iran, as these conspiracies were unsuccessful, our enemies must retreat from their wrong and incorrect path."

US President Donald Trump said earlier today that he does not want a war with Iran, which the United States accuses of attacking the US embassy in Baghdad.

"Do I want? No, I want peace and love peace. Iran must want peace more than anyone else, so I don't see that happening," Trump told reporters when asked about the escalating tension into a war with Iran.

(Independent) ... US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday accused leaders of the Iraqi "Popular Mobilization" of masterminding the attack on the US embassy in Baghdad.

Pompeo posted in his tweet on Twitter, the photos of four of the crowd leaders, describing them as "terrorists of Iran", and accused them of "masterminding the assault" on his country's embassy in Baghdad.

“The attack was organized by the terrorists Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and Qais al-Khazali, and Iranian agents Hadi al-Amiri and Faleh al-Fayyad incited him,” the American minister said.

This came, in response to the circulation of pictures of the President of the “Popular Mobilization Authority” Faleh Al-Fayyad and his deputy Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, during their participation in the protests that accompanied the funeral of the crowd victims who were killed in American attacks.

Hadi al-Amri, leader of the “Alliance of Conquest”, and Secretary-General of Asaib Ahl al-Haq, Qais Khazali, also participated in the protests.

Pompeo warned Iraqi leaders that the United States was ready to "protect" and "defend" Americans, at a time when Iraqi President Barham Salih condemned the attack on the embassy.

A statement by the US State Department said that both Abdul-Mahdi and Saleh assured Pompeo in two phone calls, "that they take their responsibility seriously and will guarantee the safety and security of American employees and American property."

The statement stated that Pompeo "clearly warned that the United States will protect and defend its citizens who are there to support a sovereign and independent Iraq."

Pompeo stressed that the attack on the US embassy should not be "confused" with the ongoing protests of the Iraqi people in the country since last October.

He added: "The attack on the American embassy should not be confused with the legitimate efforts of the Iraqi protesters, who have taken to the streets since October in the interests of the people of Iraq, and an end to corruption issued by the Iranian regime."

Dozens of protesters stormed, on Tuesday, the campus of the Washington embassy in Baghdad, and set fire to two gates and observation towers, before the riot police could drive them away to the vicinity of the embassy.

This development comes in response to American air strikes that targeted, on Sunday, the sites of the Iraqi "Hezbollah" Brigade, one of the "Popular Mobilization" factions, in Anbar Governorate (west), killing 28 people and 48 wounded among the battalions' militants.

Agreed - They have no intentions to negotiate; it's why they said what they did.

It's put out there to show the world how magnanimous Iran is and so willing to forgive if the USA would just apologize. Then Iran & USA could sit down and talk through these difficulties like " Intelligent Adults."( ;) )

Yep it's galling & infuriating to see this, but what else would we expect from these people. People capable of critical thinking see right through this; but it's all about $$$$, politics, brinkmanship & :bs: . . . it's they way of things. Not agreeing but just being a realist.
