U.S. Military Carries Out Air Strikes Targeting Iranian-backed Shi’ite Muslim Militia Groups in Iraq, Syria

The U.S. military carried out air strikes in Iraq and Syria against the Kataib Hezbollah militia group in response to the killing of a U.S. civilian contractor in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base, U.S. officials said on Sunday.

Iraqi security and militia sources said at least 18 militia fighters were killed and more than 50 wounded following three U.S. air strikes in Iraq on Sunday.

At least four local Kataib Hezbollah commanders were among the dead, the sources said, adding that one of the strikes had targeted the militia group’s headquarters near the western Qaim district on the border with Syria.

The Pentagon said it had targeted three locations of the Iranian-backed Shi’ite Muslim militia group in Iraq and two in Syria. The locations included weapons storage facilities and command and control locations the group had used to plan and execute attacks on coalition forces, it said.

A U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the strikes were carried out by F-15 fighter jets.

The United States had accused Kataib Hezbollah of carrying out a strike involving more than 30 rockets on Friday which killed the U.S. civilian contractor and injured four U.S. service members and two members of the Iraqi Security Forces near the oil-rich city of Kirkuk.

“In response to repeated Kata’ib Hizbollah attacks on Iraqi bases that host Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) coalition forces, U.S. forces have conducted precision defensive strikes … that will degrade KH’s ability to conduct future attacks against OIR coalition forces” chief Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said in a statement.

Earlier this month, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blamed Iranian-backed forces for a series of attacks on bases in Iraq and warned Iran that any attacks by Tehran or proxies that harmed Americans or allies would be “answered with a decisive U.S. response.”

Tensions have heightened between Tehran and Washington since last year when President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal with six powers and reimposed sanctions that have crippled Iran’s economy.

WASHINGTON/BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. officials said on Sunday that air strikes in Iraq and Syria against an Iran-backed militia group were successful, but warned that “additional actions” may still be taken in the region to defend U.S. interests.

The U.S. military carried out the strikes on Sunday against the Kataib Hezbollah militia group in response to the killing of a U.S. civilian contractor in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base, officials said.

U.S. President Donald Trump was briefed by his top national security advisers following the strikes at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida.

“We will not stand for the Islamic Republic of Iran to take actions that put American men and women in jeopardy,” U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters after the briefing with Trump.

Pompeo, Defense Secretary Mark Esper and General Mark Milley, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, appeared briefly in a club ballroom to comment on the airstrikes.

Esper termed the offensive “successful,” but said that Trump was informed that a further military response could be warranted.

“We discussed with him other options that are available,” Esper said. “I would note also that we will take additional actions as necessary to ensure that we act in our own self-defense and we deter further bad behavior from militia groups or from Iran.”

Iraqi security and militia sources said at least 25 militia fighters were killed and at least 55 wounded following three U.S. air strikes in Iraq on Sunday.

Washington (AFP)

The US Defense Secretary announced on Sunday that the strikes against pro-Iranian Hezbollah bases in Iraq and Syria were successful, and he did not rule out any other steps "if necessary."

"The strikes were successful," Mark Asper told reporters after raids by US F-15 fighters on five targets linked to Hezbollah in western Iraq and in eastern Syria. "We will take further measures if necessary in order to act in self-defense and deter the militias or Iran" from committing hostile acts, he added.

Asbar pointed out that the targets that were chosen were command and control facilities belonging to the Hezbollah Brigades or weapons caches.

On Sunday, US forces launched a series of raids on Hezbollah bases, killing at least 19 fighters, two days after a missile attack that led for the first time to the death of an American in Iraq.

The raids come two months after an unprecedented escalation in the level of missile attacks targeting American interests in Iraq.

After a few hours of these raids, an Iraqi security official said Sunday evening that "four Katyusha rockets landed in the evening around the Taji base (...) which includes American soldiers without causing casualties."

Asper said he had gone with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Florida, where US President Donald Trump is spending the Christmas holidays, to brief him on the latest events in the Middle East.

"We discussed with him the other options on the table," Asper said, adding that the United States might take "additional measures if necessary."

Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said the raids were aimed at "weakening the capabilities of the Hezbollah brigades to launch future attacks."

Since October 28, there have been 11 attacks on Iraqi military bases that include American soldiers or diplomats, leading to the targeting of the US embassy in the security-fortified Green Zone in Baghdad.

The first Iranian comment on the American bombing of the crowd sites

 12/30/2019 03:53:29

Shafak News / Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi condemned the US bombing of crowd sites in Iraq.
Mousavi told reporters that the American bombing is "an aggression" and is "a prominent example of terrorism."
A spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry called on America to respect the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Iraqi lands and to stop interfering in its internal affairs.
He said, "These attacks prove once again the lie of America's allegations about combating the terrorist organization of the Takfiri terrorist organization by targeting the locations of forces that have directed major strikes against ISIS terrorists over the past years."
And he added that America has revealed with these attacks its decisive support for terrorism and indifference to the independence and sovereignty of states and it must bear responsibility for the repercussions of this illegal behavior. "
Mousavi considered the presence of foreign forces in the region that "would destabilize security and stir tension and crisis in it, adding that America should end its occupation presence."
The popular crowd in Iraq announced today, Monday, that the death toll from the American bombing of its headquarters in Al-Qaim, west of Al-Anbar Governorate, has risen to 25, and 51 wounded.

Shafaq News / Speaker of the House of Representatives, Muhammad al-Halbousi, condemned on Monday the bombing of pieces of the popular crowd, which left a number of dead and wounded, considering this targeting a violation of Iraqi sovereignty.

Al Halbousi said in a statement today, that "while we call for restraint, we renew our call for all forces to be under the command of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces."

And he stressed "the need to commit to providing protection for diplomatic missions and international coalition forces that are present on Iraqi soil at the request and approval of the government, and to unite efforts to complete the war against ISIS."

The US Secretary of Defense announced on Monday that the strikes against pro-Iranian Hezbollah bases in Iraq and Syria were successful, and he did not rule out any further steps "if necessary."

For his part, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that senior US national security advisers informed President Donald Trump of the US air strikes on what US officials described as an Iranian-sponsored group in Iraq and Syria.

"We will not condone the actions of the Islamic Republic of Iran on actions that endanger American men and women," Pompeo told reporters after Trump briefed the attacks in Palm Beach, Florida.

Hezbollah Brigades intelligence

"We are in a state of constant mobilization and discussion to discuss the appropriate response mechanism from the options available to us regarding the heinous American crime against the people of the crowd," the intelligence said in a statement today.

"Our battle today with America and its mercenaries has become open to all possibilities, and today we have no choice but confrontation, and there are no accounts that will prevent us from responding to the crime of targeting the homeland protectors of the people of the popular crowd," Abyan added.

"Let Trump know that he will pay a heavy price in Iraq and in the countries where his criminal forces are present," the statement added.

High toll

Meanwhile, Director of the Movements Directorate in the Popular Mobilization Authority, Jawad Kazim Al-Rabaiwi, announced on Monday that the death toll and the number of people wounded by the American bombing that targeted sites of the Popular Mobilization Forces west of Anbar increased.

"The death toll from the brutal attack on the headquarters of the 45th and 46th brigades was 25 dead and 51 wounded," Rabiawi said in a statement.

US forces launched a series of raids on Sunday against Hezbollah bases, killing and wounding dozens of fighters, two days after a missile attack that led for the first time to the death of an American in Iraq.

Iran responds to US accusations of "ridicule": occupying Iraq and bombing its people without shame

 12/30 2019 07:18:58

Shafak News / Iranian government spokesman Ali Rabei commented today, Monday, on news of Tehran's involvement in the attack on US forces in Iraq.

In a statement he made today to Fars News, Rabiei said, "We strongly deny any role (to Iran) in the attack on American forces, stressing that" this American allegation is without evidence and cannot justify the bombing and killing of people contrary to international laws.

He added, "We condemn the American military aggression against the PMF sites in Iraq that led to the martyrdom and wounding of many of its members."

He continued, "America, in the context of its repeated lies, has pointed the finger of accusation of the PMF supported, according to his claim, by Iran, at the headquarters of the American forces," indicating that "it is ironic that America is still occupying parts of Iraq and bombing its people and pretending uneasily that it respects The sovereignty of the Iraqi government. "

And Rabiei added that "this aggressive attack by America, which it described as a defensive attack in an effort to deceive world opinion, is another indication of America's sabotage role in peace and stability in the region, especially in Iraq."

On Sunday evening, American warplanes bombed locations of the Hezbollah Brigades, in Al-Qaim Province, on the Iraqi-Syrian border.

These air strikes on the battalions sites came in response to the missile attacks launched by the brigades on Iraqi military bases hosting American soldiers and diplomats, according to the US Department of Defense, and the most recent attack targeting two days ago, the K1 base in Kirkuk, resulted in the death of an American civilian contractor and the injury of four American service personnel and two Iraqi Security Forces.

For his part, US Defense Secretary Mark Esber said that F-15 aircraft bombed five targets, three in western Iraq, and two in eastern Syria, indicating that they were command or control facilities, or armories.

The popular crowd in Iraq announced earlier today, Monday, that the death toll from the American bombing of its headquarters in Qaim, in the west of the country, has risen to 25, and 51 wounded.

On Sunday evening, Deputy Chairman of the Popular Mobilization Committee, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, threatened a "harsh response" to US forces in Iraq, against the backdrop of targeting US forces headquarters of the crowd in Anbar.

Iran-backed Iraqi militia vows revenge to US airstrikes

Kataib Hezbollah claim death toll in strikes in Iraq and Syria against its fighters has risen to 25

Outgoing Iraqi Prime Minister Abdul-Mahdi said US called him half an hour before the US strikes on Sunday

BAGHDAD: An Iranian-backed militia said Monday that the death toll from US military strikes in Iraq and Syria against its fighters has risen to 25, vowing to exact revenge for the “aggression of evil American ravens.”
The US attack — the largest yet targeting an Iraqi state-sanctioned militia — and the calls for retaliation, represent a new escalation in the proxy war between the US and Iran playing out in the Middle East that could threaten US interests in the region.
The calls for revenge in Baghdad came a day after US Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Washington had carried out military strikes targeting the Iranian-backed Iraqi militia it had blamed for a rocket attack that killed an another site in Iraq last week.

#WATCH: @DeptofDefense releases video of one of the US airstrikes on a #KataibHezbollah base after five facilities were bombed in #Iraq and #Syriahttps://t.co/mFMtlBxJe5 pic.twitter.com/INhyOk1EyP

— Arab News (@arabnews) December 30, 2019

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the strikes send the message that the US will not tolerate actions by Iran that jeopardize American lives.
The US military said “precision defensive strikes” were conducted against five sites of Kataib Hezbollah, or Hezbollah Brigades in Iraq and Syria. The group, which is separate force from the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, operates under the umbrella of the state-sanctioned militias known collectively as the Popular Mobilization Forces. Many of them are supported by Iran.
“Our battle with America and its mercenaries is now open to all possibilities,” Kataeb Hezbollah said in a statement around midnight Sunday. “We have no alternative today other than confrontation and there is nothing that will prevent us from responding to this crime.”
The US blames the militia for a rocket barrage Friday that killed a US defense contractor at a military compound near Kirkuk, in northern Iraq, as well as for a series of other attacks on bases that house American troops in Iraq that have not been claimed by any faction. Officials said as many as 30 rockets were fired in the Kirkuk attack.
A spokesman for Kataib Hezbollah denied that the group was behind the rocket attacks on US bases, including the one that killed the another site, saying Washington is using them as a pretext to attack his group.
The spokesman, Mohammed Mohieh, told The Associated Press the death toll from the American airstrikes rose to 25 on Monday and that at least 51 militiamen were wounded, some of whom were in serious condition. The militia would retaliate, he said but added that the group’s commanders would decide on the form of retaliation.
“These forces must leave,” he said of US troops in Iraq, calling the latest attack a “crime” and a “massacre.”
The US has maintained some 5,000 troops in Iraq at the invitation of the Iraqi government, to help assist in the fight against the Daesh group.
An official with the Popular Mobilization Forces said one of the American missiles struck a room where the fighters were taking a nap in the afternoon, killing some of them in their sleep as the ceiling collapsed. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters, said US forces have targeted Kataib Hezbollah in the past but offered no evidence to support his claims.
In Tehran, foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi condemned the US strikes against Kataib Hezbollah as an “obvious case of terrorism” and accused Washington of ignoring Iraq’s sovereignty.
Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah also blasted the “brutal American aggression,” saying those who took the decision to carry out the attack “will soon discover how stupid this criminal decision was.”
Kataib Hezbollah is led by Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, one of Iraq’s most powerful men. He once battled US troops and is now the deputy head of the Popular Mobilization Forces. In 2009, the State Department linked him to the elite Quds Force of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, designated a foreign terrorist organization by President Donald Trump earlier this year.
The attack that killed the another site and US counter-strikes come as months of political turmoil roil Iraq. About 500 people have died in anti-government protests, most of them demonstrators killed by Iraqi security forces.
The mass uprisings prompted the resignation last month of Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi, who remains in a caretaker capacity.
In a statement, Abdul-Mahdi said Esper had called him about a half-hour before the US strikes on Sunday to tell him of US intentions to hit bases of the militia suspected of being behind Friday’s rocket attack. Abdul-Mahdi said he asked Esper to call off the US plan.

Nobody can ask the US to just "leave " ,but that's the insane iranians point of view .   "Ok , we'll up and go now if that's what you want ". Iran is like a flea on the gnat of a dog . We could level their mountains .  The Stategic Framework Agreement for Iraq stipulates that the US would assist Iraq to get back on its feet and retain as much independence as possible . Maybe that's why the US has shown restraint in its military response .

The Iranians need to look for two things.

1.  All US troops and Embassy people leave Iraq

2.  A ship which is headed to Iran that has a big sign onboard that says, EXXON!!!!

If they see those 2 things they should start to worry.
