Baghdad / news

Today, Saturday, the American newspaper Newsweek Times reported that about 14 missiles struck Friday evening, the "k1" military base in Kirkuk Governorate, killing one another site and wounding others.

The American newspaper points out that intelligence officials have blamed groups that the United States says Iran is behind their support.

According to the newspaper, an another site working for the Ministry of Defense was killed and several other Americans were wounded, as well as injuries to the Iraqi security forces due to the bombing.

It quoted a senior Pentagon official as saying: Shortly after the attack, an abandoned Katyusha missile system was found near the base, hitting approximately 11 to 14 missiles, one of which hit a storage facility that ignited ammunition inside.

According to the newspaper, the US Defense Department has not yet held official responsibility for the incident, and no group has claimed responsibility for it, but the attack may also have been carried out by ISIS, which is hostile to the US military presence in Iraq.

Investigations still underway to determine who was behind the unclaimed attacks on bases across Iraq

Iraq declared victory over Daesh two years ago, but they still carry out sporadic attacks in parts of the country

AL-ASAD AIR BASE, Iraq: An Iraqi general said Sunday that security has been beefed up around the Ain Al-Asad air base, a sprawling complex in the western Anbar desert that hosts US forces, following a series of attacks.
Maj. Gen. Raad Mahmoud told The Associated Press that investigations were still underway to determine who was behind the unclaimed attacks on bases across Iraq, including one earlier this month in which five rockets landed inside Ain Al-Asad.
A US defense contractor was killed Friday in a rocket attack at a different Iraqi military compound near Kirkuk where US service members are based. Several American and Iraqi troops were also wounded.
US officials said the attack involved as many as 30 rockets. US officials have for the most part blamed Iran-backed fighters for these attacks.
Iraq has been roiled since Oct. 1 by anti-government protests that have left more than 450 people dead. The vast majority of those who died were demonstrators killed by security forces firing tear gas and live ammunition. The mass uprisings prompted the resignation of former Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi late last month.
Meanwhile, the Iraqi Joint Operations Command announced Sunday the start of a military operation to pursue the remnants of the Daesh group in five different areas in the country.
The eighth phase of the operation, code named “Will of Victory,” would cover areas in Mosul, Kirkuk, Diyala, Salahaddin, and Al-Jazeera provinces.
The paramilitary Popular Mobilization Forces and local tribal militias are also participating in the operations, with air cover from the Iraqi air force and the Coalition air force, according to a statement issued Sunday.

Follow-up / ... American press reports revealed today, Sunday, that the National Security Council led by US President Donald Trump is holding intensive meetings, after targeting the "Key One" base in the Iraqi city of Kirkuk, killing one American soldier and wounding others.

The Wall Street Journal reported that intensive National Security Council meetings, led by US President Donald Trump, are being held to discuss the attack on the Iraqi Kirkuk base, which killed an American and wounded other American soldiers.

"President Trump has been briefed on the incident, and he is still working closely with his national security team to monitor the situation," a US administration official said.

According to the report, some missiles hit the ammunition storage depot at the base, which led to several explosions, according to preliminary estimates provided to US defense officials.

"This is the 11 missile attack in the past two months, which was carried out against Iraqi bases, where American forces were present," the US defense official said. "These attacks have become a source of great concern to the Pentagon."

A US defense official announced that an another site killed and wounded 4 American soldiers when, on Friday, more than 30 rockets were fired at an Iraqi military base.

The attack comes two weeks after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a statement warning that any missile attacks by Iran or its proxies in Iraq that harm the Americans "will be answered decisively."

The Trump administration did not disclose the group suspected of carrying out the attack. The US official added that the US military is focusing on a possible link to Iran's Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia. Finished 2

US airstrikes target Kataib Hezbollah in Iraq and Syria

Sky News Arabia reported just before 8 in evening Iraqi time that a bomb struck near the city of Al-Qaim in Iraq near the Syrian border.

By SETH J. FRANTZMAN
DECEMBER 29, 2019 20:30

On Sunday evening in Iraq US forces bombed a headquarters of Kataib Hezbollah, an Iraqi-based Shi’ite militia, in response to an attack that killed a US contractor on Friday.

US airstrikes targeted at least five locations of the Iraqi-based militia Kataib Hezbollah. The Pentagon says three targets were in Iraq and two in Syria. Kataib Hezbollah is closely linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The targets includes weapons depots and command posts according to Reuters and a US military statement. The attack may have involved drones, according to reports, and are characterized as “defensive strikes,” in retaliation for the attack on K-1 on Friday and other attacks on bases with US forces in Iraq. The Friday attack killed a US contractor and wounded four soldiers. Several members of Kataib Hezbollah were killed and wounded.

Sky News Arabia reported just before 8 in evening Iraqi time that a bomb struck near the city of Al-Qaim in Iraq near the Syrian border. US forces are on alert according to the report. Iranian-backed Shi’ite militias have launched  more than a dozen attacks on bases where US forces are located. US forces in Iraq are part of the anti-ISIS Coalition. The pro-Iranian militias are part of Iraqi Security Forces called the Popular Mobilization Units.

Kataib Hezbollah’s leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis was sanctioned by the US in 2009. His group has bases in Syria as well. One of those bases in Albukamal was hit in an airstrike in June 2018. His group has threatened the US in the past and he works closely with IRGC Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani. Assistant Secretary of Defense Jonathan Hoffman said that the attack was in response to “repeated Kataib Hezbollah attacks on Iraqi bases that host Operation Inherent Resolve coalition forces.” His statement ssaid that the US conducted “precision defensive strikes against five KH facilities in Iraq and Syria that will degrade KH’s ability to conduct future attacks.” The US says that the areas it struck were not only storage and command and control locations but also used to “plan and execute attacks.” The US has expressed concern in the past about pro-Iranian militias targeting Coalition forces in Syria.

Iraq is in the midst of a political crises after months off rioting. The Iranian-backed militias are accused of killing more than 500 protesters. The US designated Qais Khazali, head of the Asaib Ahl al-Haq militia, as a terrorist earlier this month and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has warned Iran that any attacks on US forces or allies will be met with a response.

The US has opposed the increasing role of the Popular Mobilization Forces and their affiliated militias. In 2017 US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the militias should go home now that the war on ISIS was over. The PMU had been created to help Iraq fight ISIS. However Iraq’s Prime Minister at the time said the militias were the hope of the future of Iraq. In July and August 2019 the militias accused Israel of carrying out airstrikes against their munitions facilities. In December reports emerged that Iran is moving ballistic missiles to Iraq.

The US attack is  the first time the US has struck Iranian-backed militias in Iraq. Iranian-backed groups have attacked US forces for many years, especially between 2006 and 2008. Qais Khazali, leader of the AAH militia, was imprisoned by the US at Camp Cropper in 2007 for attacks. These militias work closely with Iran and also with Hezbollah in Lebanon. They have supported the Assad regime in Syria. Khazali went to Lebanon in 2017 and threatened Israel.

Hadi al-Amiri, head of the Badr Organization, one of the PMU’s largest militias, has warned Israel in the past and blamed Israel for attacks in Iraq. He has also warned that a US-Iran war could “burn” Iraq. Amiri, Muhandis and Khazali are all key figures today in Iraq’s parliament and seek to appoint Iraq’s next Prime Minister. Iraqi President Barham Saleh has refused their recent choices and threatened to resign, but the pro-Iranian block in parliament has so many seats it believes it can push through whoever it wants. In this context the rising attacks on US forces and harassing fire against bases where the US forces are located is a message by the militias and Iran of Tehran’s strength in Iraq. Even the protesters, who are mostly Shi’ite, have been protesting against Iran’s overbearing power in Iraq.

The airstrikes bring into stark contrast the dispute between Iraqi-based pro-Iranian groups and US policy in the Middle East. The US says that it will not be stopped from exercising its right of self-defense. US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper has told Iraq’s leadership that he is committed to see the Kataib Hezbollah attack “cease once and for all.” Iraq’s former Prime Minister assured him they would, but then he resigned. The US says that “Iran and Kataib Hezbollah proxy forces must cease their attacks on US and coalition forces and respect Iraq’s sovereignty to prevent additional defensive actions by US forces.”

US strikes Iran-backed militia strongholds in Iraq and Syria

U.S. forces struck five Hezbollah targets on Sunday, according to a Pentagon news release, in retaliation for a Friday attack on a Iraqi coalition base that killed one U.S. civilian.

The locations — three in Iraq and two in Syria — included storage facilities and command-and-control centers the Iran-backed group uses to carry out attacks, Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said in the release.

“Iran and their [Hezbollah] proxy forces must cease their attacks on U.S. and coalition forces, and respect Iraq’s sovereignty, to prevent additional defensive actions by U.S. forces,” he said.

The strikes came two days after a rocket attack on an Iraqi Security Forces base, which houses coalition forces fighting the anti-ISIS campaign, in Kirkuk. The attack killed one another site and wounded several Iraqi troops.

On Saturday, after reports that an Iran-backed militia had launched the assault, Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., tweeted that Iran should “face swift and severe consequences” if true.

The Pentagon said Sunday its strikes specifically targeted an Iranian-backed militia known as Kata’ib Hizbollah.

U.S. officials have identified the Iranian supported militia for a number of attacks over the last couple of months to include the Dec. 3 strike against the al-Asad airbase and the 30-plus rocket strike that slammed a Kirkuk military base on Friday.

While al-Asad is located in Anbar province, Iraq, Kata’ib Hizbollah has an extensive network across the volatile province, according to Phillip Smyth, a research fellow for the Washington Institute and Iran expert.

The Shia militant group has been known to operate in al-Qaim, Abu Kamal and along Route 1 that runs through Anbar province, Smyth told Military Times.

Friday’s attack against the Kirkuk base was at least the 11th rocket attack against U.S. bases and interests in Iraq over the last two months.

A U.S. official previously told Military Times that the attackers, believed to be Iranian-backed militias, have been using more powerful 122 mm rockets.

Friday’s attack on Kirkuk used 107 mm rockets. A source on-base told Military Times that the truck used in the Kirkuk attack had been recovered and included makeshift tubes capable of firing 36 rockets. The source said all but four rockets had been fired.

An armory aboard the Kirkuk base was nearly completely destroyed, the source detailed to Military Times.

The Pentagon’s announcement Sunday that it had struck an Iranian-backed militia is the first public announcement of U.S. military action against the Shia militant group since tensions between Washington and Tehran have escalated following a series of attacks on commercial oil tankers in the Persian Gulf and the September strike against two Saudi Arabian oil fields.

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill have expressed concern that the policy of restraint towards Tehran has diminished the U.S. military’s ability to deter Iranian aggression in the region.

“We are in a period of heightened risk with respect to Iran,” Gen. Mark Milley, the Joint Chiefs chairman told lawmakers in December. But the top American commander explained that “restraint in this particular situation is an appropriate response.”

“The ball is in the Iranian court," Milley said. How they [Iran] respond and the size and scope of that response will determine a U.S. answer, he explained to lawmakers.

“Iran should not mistake the United States’ restraint for an unwillingness to respond with decisive military force should our forces or interests be attacked," Secretary of Defense Mark Esper told lawmakers in December.

U.S. officials have warned Iran and its proxies to halt rocket attacks in the country. In mid-December Esper phoned Iraqi Prime Minster Adel Abd al Mahdi and asked for help to stop the rocket attacks.

Iraq has struggled to control the nebulous web of militia groups known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, which rose in the chaos of ISIS’s scourge across Iraq in 2014. Most PMFs are Shia militias with Iranian support.

The government has tried to fold PMFs into Iraqi security forces, but a recent U.S. inspector general report detailed that some militias have defied the Iraqi order.

The Defense Intelligence Agency also said in the IG report that “Iranian-affiliated groups within the PMF are unlikely to change their loyalties because of the new order.”

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned Iran and its leaders in December of a “decisive U.S. response” if the regime or its militias harm American troops or allies in the region.

Other U.S. lawmakers have questioned whether Iran’s aggressive behavior is a symptom of the failure of President Donald Trump’s failed maximum pressure campaign to rein in Iran’s malign activity in the region.

Iran is “much closer” to a nuclear weapon and “regional aggression picked up," Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton told Esper during a December hearing. The “administration’s strategy is failing."

Analysts and national security experts have warned the Trump administration that Iran would likely strike against U.S. interests in the region through proxy and militia forces.

Iran has an extensive network of militias that stretch from Tehran to Yemen and Syria. Attacks carried out by these groups complicate efforts to assign blame to Iran.

Iran often uses asymmetrical force just below the threshold of major armed conflict across the Middle East to confront the U.S.

America’s strikes Sunday against the Iranian-backed militia may be a sign of a heated proxy conflict brewing between Iran and the U.S. in the Middle East.

The US military has carried out what the Pentagon described as “defensive strikes” in Iraq and Syria against the Kata’ib Hezbollah militia group, two days after a US civilian contractor was killed in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base.

The Pentagon said it targeted three locations of the Iranian-backed Shia Muslim militia group in Iraq and two in Syria. The sites included weapons storage facilities and command and control locations Kata’ib Hezbollah had used to plan and execute attacks on coalition forces.

The US had accused the group of the 30-plus rocket attack on Friday that killed the civilian contractor and injured four US service members as well as two members of the Iraqi security forces near the oil-rich city of Kirkuk.

“In response to repeated Kata’ib Hezbollah attacks on Iraqi bases that host Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) coalition forces, US forces have conducted precision defensive strikes ... that will degrade KH’s ability to conduct future attacks against OIR coalition forces,” chief Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said.

In Iraq, several Iraqi militia fighters were killed on Sunday in an air strike on their headquarters near the western al-Qa’im district on the border with Syria, military sources and militia commanders said.

Earlier this month, the US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, blamed Iranian-backed forces for a series of attacks on bases in Iraq and warned that any attacks by Tehran or proxies that harmed the US or allies would be answered with a decisive response.

A Sky News Arabia correspondent said that drones launched strikes at the headquarters of the popular crowd, "Brigade 45", in the district of Al-Qaim in Anbar Province, western Iraq. Local sources stated that the targeted attacks were from the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades.
Security sources have told Agence France Presse that they believe that the Hezbollah Brigades, one of the most prominent Iranian-backed PMF factions, which are blacklisted in the United States, is responsible for a missile attack on a US military base near the city of Kirkuk last Friday. , Which resulted in the death of an American civilian contractor. The Iraqi army had said in a statement earlier, Friday, that several missiles had hit the Iraqi "K1" military base, which includes American and Iraqi forces near the oil-rich city of Kirkuk.

WASHINGTON - (AFP) - The US military announced on Sunday that it had targeted five bases in Iraq and Syria for the pro-Iranian Iraqi Hezbollah, two days after an American was killed in a missile attack on an Iraqi military base in Kirkuk.

A battalion official said that fifteen fighters, including leaders, were killed and several wounded

Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said in a statement that the strikes were carried out "in response to repeated attacks by the Hezbollah (Iraqi) Brigades on Iraqi bases that include American forces," stressing that "they will weaken the capabilities of the Hezbollah brigades to launch future attacks on coalition forces."

He explained that there are three bases in Iraq and two in Syria. These bases are weapons storage units or headquarters of the pro-Iranian Hezbollah Brigade, a faction of the PMF.

A Pentagon spokesman accused this faction of targeting 30 military shells in Kirkuk (North) Friday, in an operation that killed an another site and wounded four American soldiers and two Iraqi soldiers.

The United States has recently vowed a "decisive response" to repeated operations targeting its interests in Iraq. The operation was the first base in Kirkuk to kill an American.

Hoffman reminded of the "close links" between the Hezbollah Brigades and the Qods Force responsible for the external operations of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, and in the context warned Iran and its proxies that they must "stop their attacks on American and international coalition forces and respect Iraq’s sovereignty to avoid any additional defensive reaction by the forces." American. ”

He continued, "The coalition is in Iraq in response to the Iraqi government's call to confirm the final defeat of ISIS and to provide advice and support to the Iraqi army."

He declared, “The United States and its coalition partners fully respect the sovereignty of Iraq and support (a strong and independent) Iraq. But despite this, the United States will not give up its right to self-defense.

Adel Abdul-Mahdi - Head of the caretaker government

Direct: The head of the caretaker government in the Iraqi Republic, Adel Abdul Mahdi, affirmed his strong rejection to bombing the crowd sites.

The Iraqi News Agency, "Awa", reported in a report that indicated that Abdul-Mahdi had informed the US Defense Secretary, Mark Esber, of his strong rejection of the bombing.

Earlier in the day, the Pentagon announced in a statement, targeting the headquarters of the Hizbullah forces of the Popular Mobilization in Iraq and Syria .

The Pentagon confirmed that the American forces launched precise defensive strikes that targeted 5 Hezbollah facilities in Syria and Iraq, which would weaken the capacity of the PMF .

The US Department of Defense said that the PMF launched a missile attack on an Iraqi military base near Kirkuk, and the attack killed an American citizen and wounded four US service personnel and two members of the Iraqi security forces .

To bad, what you think! I wished the Air Force would turn that place into glass! JMHO 🤠
