Iraqi PM says protests have helped ‘pressure’ political groups

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi said on Saturday that the nationwide protests had pressured political groups to bring about reforms but repeated a call for an end to demonstrations.

“The protests have helped and will help pressure political groups, the government…to reform and accept change,” Abdul Mahdi said in a statement his office released.

“However, continuing protests must allow for a return to normal life, which will lead to legitimate demands being met.”

Since they began in early October, widespread protests in Iraq have resulted in the deaths of at least 270, while some 12,000 have been injured.

Demonstrators are calling for radical change in Iraq’s political system, which they say fails to address their needs, but, rather, serves the interests of a small governing elite.

The protests over the past month reflect widespread dissatisfaction with the economy, including high levels of unemployment, the dismal state of public services, and widespread government corruption.

Last week, the Iraqi prime minister again called for an end to the nationwide protests, which he complained are affecting the country’s economy.

Demonstrators had used tires, stones, and metals to block the main entrances to ports and oil refineries.

However, Iraq’s Umm Qasr port was reopenedon Saturday as operations resumed while Iraqi security forces regained control of three bridges in Baghdad.

SULAIMANI — Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi said on Saturday (November 9) that political parties had “made mistakes” in their running of the country, promising electoral reform and other measures as he sought to bring an end to months of protests.

“Political forces and parties are important institutions in any democratic system, and they have made great sacrifices, but they have also made many mistakes,” Abdul Mahdi said in a statement, according to Reuters.

He made his remarks as security forces were trying to push protesters back from several major bridges in Baghdad that had been occupied for days. At least 34 people were injured as security forces launched tear gas and stun grenades to try to disperse protesters still grouped near the bridges.

On Friday, Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, Iraq’s senior Shi’ite Muslim cleric, urged the country’s ruling elite to seek a peaceful way out of the crisis in which at least 280 people have died.

The prime minister appeared to strike a more conciliatory tone toward protesters, who have demanded that he step down, saying that protests are a legitimate engine of political change. At the same time he urged demonstrators not to interrupt “normal life” in the country that has been hit economically by weeks of unrest.

Tens of thousands of people have protested across the country since Oct 1. with security forces using lethal force to try to quell the unrest. Demonstrators are demanding an overhaul of the political system and criticizing corruption in the ruling class that has dominated the country since the U.S.-led overthrow of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

“The protests have helped and will help pressure political groups, the government ... to reform and accept change. However continuing protests must allow for a return to normal life, which will lead to legitimate demands being met,” Abdul Mahdi said.

The protests began in Baghdad and quickly spread to the country’s southern provinces. Security forces continue to use live fire against demonstrators, in addition to tear gas canisters and stun grenades fired directly at protesters.

Abdul Mahdi also promised a ban on possession of weapons by non-state groups that have been accused of shooting demonstrators and investigations into protester deaths,

The prime minister, who announced a spate of reforms during the first wave of protests last month, added that new electoral reforms would be announced in the “coming few days”. He did not elaborate.

Iraq says oil extraction, exports stable despite ongoing deadly protests

Iraq says oil extraction, exports stable despite ongoing deadly protests

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Iraqi Ministry of Oil said on Saturday that oil export and extraction levels were remaining "stable" despite anti-government protests marred by violence continuing throughout in the nation's central and southern provinces.

Oil Minister Thamer Ghadhban said that the “extractive side is in very good health,” as well, according to a statement from the ministry. He also said Iraq is “committed” to its share of output in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

Since they began in early October, widespread protests in Iraq have resulted in the deaths of at least 300 and some 15,000 have been injured, according to the Independent High Commission for Human Rights of Iraq (IHCHR).

Amid ongoing worries by government officials about the implications of the country’s current unrest to the economy, social media pages, human rights organizations, and media reports continue to show the use of government violence to counter and deter protests in various parts of Iraq, especially the capital of Baghdad and the oil hub of Basra to the south.

Security forces reportedly used tear gas to disperse protesters on a street along the Tigris River and near a bridge leading toward the heavily fortified Green Zone, where many government offices and diplomatic missions are located. The protesters have repeatedly tried to penetrate the area, emblematic to many in the general Iraqi population of the stark divide between them and the nation's rich and powerful class.

Those who have taken to the streets and many other Iraqis complain of high levels of unemployment, the dismal state of infrastructure and basic public services, and widespread government corruption, widely perceived to be at the heart of it all. Demonstrators are calling for radical change in Iraq’s political system, which they say serves the interests of a small governing elite instead of the general population.

With protesters repeatedly rejecting government concessions and promises of reform, Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi again on Saturday pleaded for calm, saying in a statement, “The protests have helped and will help pressure political groups… to reform and accept change.”

“However,” he added, “continuing protests must allow for a return to normal life, which will lead to legitimate demands being met.”
