Tehran fury as Iraq’s Shiite leadership rejects Iranian ‘interference’

https://www.thebaghdadpost.com/en/Story/44559/Tehran-fury-as-Iraq-s-Shiite-leadership-rejects-Iranian-interference

The mass demonstrations in Iraq have heightened tensions between Najaf’s supreme religious authority, led by Grand Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Al-Sistani, and Iran’s supreme religious leader Ali Khamenei, sources close to Sistani told Arab News on Saturday.
Baghdad and nine southern Shiite-dominated provinces have been witnessing mass demonstrations since Oct. 1 as people protest over corruption, unemployment and lack of daily basic life services.
Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi and his Iranian-backed allies led a brutal crackdown on demonstrations in its first week, killing around 150 protesters and wounding 7,000 others.
The demonstrations stopped for two weeks but returned last Friday after Abdul Mahdi vowed under local and international pressure not to use live ammunition. Despite this commitment, more than 250 demonstrators were killed and more than 6,000 wounded, mostly in Baghdad and Basra.
Most demonstrators in Baghdad and Basra were killed by tear gas canisters, while in the other provinces by gunfire of guards of political parties and armed factions, whose headquarters had come under attack from protesters.
Demonstrators’ demands increased to include the overthrow of the government and early national parliamentary elections preceded by a change in the election law and the appointment of a new election commission.
Iraqi political forces and armed factions backed by Iran would be the biggest losers if the demands of the demonstrators are met, top senior officials and politicians said.
Sistani is the leader of the world’s Shiite community and is the most influential man in Iraq, considered the godfather of the political process since 2003. Although there are many religious and sectarian points that he and Khamenei share, Sistani does not adopt the theory of velayat-e faqih and does not recognize absolute right of the clergy to control the state.
The two men have been at odds over managing the situation in Iraq for years, but it turned into a rupture a year and a half ago, according to Sistani’s associates.
The dispute resurfaced last Wednesday, when Khamenei demanded in a public statement that the demonstrations in Iraq and Lebanon end. Many Iranian clerics have accused Iraqi demonstrators of being in the pay of Israel, America and Britain during their sermons at Friday prayers in the past few weeks.
Sistani, in an open letter read by his representative, Sayyed Ahmed Al-Safi, in Friday prayers said that no one is a guardian of the Iraqis and that no person or group or regional or international party has the right to impose their will on them or determine their choices regarding the management of their country or the reforms that they want.
Sistani’s message “irritated Khamenei and worried his allies in Iraq,” Iraqi politicians and sources close to Sistani told Arab News.
“The message was earth-shattering,” a top senior Iraqi official said. “No one, especially Khamenei, expected that Sistani would announce his rejection of their intervention in this way.
“Iran threw all its weight behind Abdul Mahdi. They believe that this government is their government and they cannot allow it to fall.
“Any early election or amendment to the election law would mean losing the control of their local allies over the country, which they would not allow.
“They (the Iraqi forces backed by Iran) are currently rejecting any solutions to get out of the crisis and any activation of the constitutional procedures that can dismantle the crisis, means launching an endless cycle of violence because they they have weapons and power.”
Gen. Qasem Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards who runs Iran’s operations in Iraq, arrived in Baghdad on Thursday and asked to meet Sistani on Saturday to discuss the latest developments and try to calm the situation between Najaf and Tehran, sources close to Sistani said.
“Sayyed Sistani’s office agreed to his request to meet,” the sources said.
“Sistani now has an interest in meeting him to tell him directly about their displeasure with Iranian positions.
“Although Sistani stopped meeting with any of Sayyed Khamenei’s envoys more than a year and a half ago, now the country’s interest requires his meeting Soleimani.
“Their groups (Iranian-backed forces) are ready to burn the country and the message must reach them clearly.
“The Iranians must take their hands off the demonstrators and curb their groups.”

Looks like Martyrs Day will be a little more crowded.

With a population with no jobs, no prospects, no future; they're not going away and they won't stop protesting because the have nothing to lose.

Wise up GOI ( & Iran ), you can't win this unless you have enough ammunition to kill 38 million people.

Iraqis call for boycott of Iranian goods

Iraqis call for boycott of Iranian goods

BAGHDAD - Ahmed al-Naimi

November 3, 2019

Iraqi activists and bloggers launched a massive campaign on  social networking sites to boycott  Iranian goods in Iraq, in conjunction with similar slogans in demonstrations in  Baghdad and cities in the south and center of the country under the label "Khalis Takhis" in protest against the Iranian intervention in the country, which they described as destructive and harmful to the unity of Iraqi society and its future. Hours after statements by Iranian leader Ali Khamenei, he described the demonstrations in Iraq as a riot and called for an end to them.
The volume of trade exchange between Iraq and Iran more than $ 12 billion annually, where Iraq imports most of its agricultural, industrial and construction needs except gas and gasoline from Iran since the US invasion of the country, with the incomprehensible paralysis so far in the Iraqi productive sectors, especially agriculture and industry.

Experts considered that the success of boycotting Iranian goods across Iraq would be a blow to the Iranian economy, which is falling apart mainly because of US sanctions, especially as the Iraqi market is the largest consumer market for Iranian goods in the region.

Economist Momen al-Zubaidi says that "the boycott of Iranian goods would result in significant losses on the Iranian economy if it actually implemented Iran's financial imports from exporting its goods to Iraq and threatened to decline after it aspired to raise them to $ 20 billion annually as a trade exchange for many goods and products."
Zubaidi adds to the "new Arab" that the large popular reactions and response to the campaign may create a crisis in the Iraqi market, where Iranian goods are piling up if the boycott campaign is applied on a large scale.

Tehran has taken over the Iraqi market since 2003, in front of other competitors such as China, Turkey and other countries at a time when Iraq's foreign trade is about $ 40 billion annually, mostly with Iran.

According to strategist Abdul Ghaffar Daoudi, "Iran controls the Iraqi market completely through its arms, militias and ruling parties loyal to it in Baghdad. The Iraqi market contributed to the growth of the Iranian economy by about 12% during the past year because Iranian goods do not find consumers in countries other than Iraq because of its poor ", As he put it.

`` Iran 's economy and foreign trade at this particular time after the US sanctions depend entirely on the Iraqi market and any comprehensive boycott inside Iraq will deal a fatal blow that Iran will not be able to recover from for years and will inevitably increase popular tension inside Iran and may be exposed to unprecedented economic collapse.' '

Activists, for their part, strongly urged a boycott of Iranian goods, considering it an important public measure to punish Iran for what it has done in Iraq since 2003, its continued interventions and its contribution to the killing of Iraqis and support for corrupt parties in Baghdad.

The Iranian goods boycott

"Boycott Iranian goods. Every amount you pay to buy Iranian goods they buy a weapon to kill you," he wrote.

Meanwhile, Talal al-Haddad called on "all the free people of Iraq to strike and boycott Iranian goods and declare a boycott of all Iranian products in front of the crimes of the Mongols of the times."

The Iraqi Ghaith said that "the boycott campaign came after Khamenei considered the demonstrations in Iraq riots and chaos, demanding the demonstrators to change according to the constitutional frameworks what some protesters considered blatant interference in the affairs of their country."

The writer Mohsen Al-Ramli said on his official page, "Free and conscious youth ask us to carry out a comprehensive and long-term awareness campaign to boycott Iranian goods. ".

During his visit to Iraq in January 2019, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif announced his country's intention to increase trade with Iraq to $ 20 billion annually by 2020.

Iraq imports from Iran dairy products, fruits, canned food and construction materials such as cement, bricks, rebar, fertilizers, agricultural pesticides, fabrics, cars, poultry and electrical, as well as petrochemicals, liquid gas and many other products, most of which are poor or expired
The campaign comes in conjunction with anger and unprecedented Iraqi outrage against the continued Iranian interventions was evident during the recent demonstrations, especially after the statements of Iranian leader Ali Khamenei, which abused the demonstrators in Iraq, observers said.

BAGHDAD, Iraq— Women are playing key roles at the forefront of the protests which have swept across the nation.

In Baghdad, Rudaw spoke to several women, many of them students, who have volunteered their time to care for both the wounded and their city.

One protester has been tending to the injured from dawn until dusk, but refused to speak to the media. Others have been ferrying food to protesters and cleaning up the streets.

Many were fearful of how their families would react.

“We are the children of this nation,” one woman told Rudaw. “We carry the responsibility to support them [the male protesters],” she added.

Others have decorated the streets of Baghdad with revolutionary art and tributes to the fallen.

"We have painted the murals black as a reminder of our many martyrs," a protester told Rudaw's Halkawt Aziz.

Rudaw English was informed via Whatsapp that one protester, Dr Saba al-Mahadawi, was kidnapped in Baghdad on November 2. Her fate remains unknown.

More than 250 people are said to have died since initial demonstrations began on October 1, according to the Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights (IHCHR). Initially focused on grievances over corruption, unemployment and other issues, protesters are now calling for a new government.

Rejecting unprecedented interventions in Iraqi affairs, dominating the country's decisions and capabilities and contributing to the killing of demonstrators, the Iraqis decided to openly rebel and prevent any manifestations of rapprochement with Iran.

This was what the revolutionaries did when they decided on Sunday, November 3, 2019, with the announcement of the strike, the largest in the country's history, to oust the name of one of the symbols of the Iranian revolution from the streets of the city.

The revolutionaries said that by the order of the people, the name of "Imam Khomeini Street" in Najaf was changed to "Tishreen Revolution Martyrs Street".

This was welcomed by activists and demonstrators, stressing that no Khomeini and no sanctity for anybody except the people and Iraq.

With the success of the general strike targeting large areas in most of the provinces of Iraq on Sunday, November 3, 2019, Iraqis continued on another path aimed at disciplining the state that supports the killing and the use of excessive violence against the rebels.

Activists and politicians on social media and local and international media confirmed the success of the popular boycott of Iranian goods even though it started three days ago.

According to what was leaked, the commercial goods from Iran to the Iraqi markets filled the stores and jammed after traders decided not to buy them to participate in the demonstrators in their demands.

Meanwhile, the mother of the activist Saba al-Mahdawi, on Sunday, launched a distress cry to recover her daughter, who was kidnapped by armed militiamen.

This prompted activists to launch a hashtag on the social networking site "Twitter" under the title "# Win_Saba"; in order to reach the young Iraqi girl quickly before being abused.
