SULAIMANI – Two protesters were killed and more than two dozen others wounded in Baghdad on Sunday (November 3) as protests continued for a tenth straight day in central and southern Iraq.

Eager to see concrete proposals to change the country's governance system, protest organizers said several days ago that they would be ready to hear proposals for reform in a round-table setting when Prime Minister Adil Abdul stepped down and President Barham Salih called early elections. The latter said on Sunday that he hoped to introduce a new draft electoral law soon.

More than 250 people have been killed since the protests began on October 1, the vast majority of whom were protesters. Thousands have been injured.

Security forces killed a protester and wounded 91 others in Baghdad on Saturday, security and medical sources said, as tens of thousands of Iraqis gathered in mass anti-government protests in the capital and blocked roads leading to a major port, Reuters reported.

Protesters have been congregating in the capital’s central Tahrir Square for weeks, demanding the fall of the political elite in the biggest wave of mass demonstrations since the fall of Saddam Hussein.

Protests have accelerated dramatically in recent days, drawing huge crowds from across sectarian and ethnic divides.

They have been comparatively peaceful by day, becoming more violent after dark as police use tear gas and rubber bullets to battle self-proclaimed “revolutionary” youths. More than 250 people were killed in October.

Clashes have focused on the ramparts to the Republic Bridge leading across the Tigris to the heavily fortified Green Zone of government buildings, where the protesters say out-of-touch leaders are holed up in their walled-off bastion of privilege.

Security forces on Saturday erected concrete walls on one of Baghdad’s main streets which leads into Tahrir Square in an attempt to reduce the turnout but a spontaneous protest in which crowds surrounded soldiers driving bulldozers forced them to take the structures down.

Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi made a number of calls in a letter to demonstrators in several Iraqi cities since last month.
"It has been a month since the popular demonstrations broke out in the provinces of Iraq, especially Baghdad and the south," Abdul-Mahdi said in a statement. The demonstrations turned into popular festivals in which security forces and demonstrators joined forces in a wonderful unity and cooperation that preserved the popularity and peaceful nature of the demonstrations.
"The first is the continuing casualties on both sides, albeit in fewer than the first 10 days, but every drop of blood spilled is expensive and painful and must be stopped.
"These groups have nothing to do with the demonstrations, they cover them up and use them as human shields to carry out banditry, burning, looting and clashing with security forces using Molotov cocktails, catapultes, even grenades, firearms, knives and others," he said. The security forces do not use live bullets or lethal weapons, and the security forces do not carry out any acts of attack or attack, but stand Stop the defense against attacks by outlaws, whether to break into the barriers of security forces in the bridges of the Republic and Senk and others, or in the attack on the headquarters and government and civil interests in Baghdad and the provinces. "
"The security forces have invited a lot of demonstrators, activists and organizations to come to the ranks of the security repulsion to see the scale and methods of attacks and acts of violence by outlaws," Abdul Mahdi said.
He pointed out that "the demonstrations have achieved many of its purposes and prompted the three authorities to review their positions. There has been a wide political movement, and many decisions have been issued to meet many of the demands made by the demonstrators. The events that prove that freedoms are responsibilities are the main tool for the people to evaluate their rulers, express their opinion and realize their just demands. Therefore, the supreme religious authority defended peaceful demonstrations. Anon. "
`` I met with a large number of demonstrators and thanked them for their pressure and the importance of renouncing violence for the success of the reform demands and continued peaceful popular pressure on the government and political forces to be able to succeed against the system of quotas and special privileges and corruption and to overcome the obstructionist approach that delays the achievement you are demanding. ''
"It is a month when the interests, schools and universities have been disrupted and a major part of public life has been disrupted. It is time for life to return to normal. All markets, interests, laboratories, schools and universities should be opened. "Without affecting the public and private life and interests, it is up to you. This is your right. Your presence in the fields and your expression of opinion support us in presenting and implementing reforms, which is one of the most important factors of reform and pressure, if conducted peacefully and legally."
"The most important thing here is to isolate the saboteurs from your peaceful movement. We postponed the Baghdad International Fair for a period of time because of the situation ... and delayed the completion of the submission of the 2020 budget. Threatening oil interests and blocking some roads from Iraq's ports are causing huge losses exceeding billions, delaying the arrival of goods, and others, raising the prices paid by all citizens and the poor. In particular, it disrupts the provision of job opportunities and the growth of the economy and exposes patients to danger because of the closure of medical clinics and obstruction of the movement of ambulances, and for which students lose important study days with the need to complete curricula and prepare for examinations, especially ministerial ones, and delays the completion of citizens' transactions by disrupting the work of service departments, and cut off the livelihood of people Especially from the owners of the shops and workers on a daily wage, and weakens the endeavors to achieve decent living and social justice of this decent people.
"We have reduced the curfew hours. What is most important for the government is the return of normal life, while ensuring the protection of the rights of citizens, including the right to peaceful demonstration in the designated places and the prevention of arson and assault, whatever they may be."

Abdul-Mahdi warns of security and economic risks threatening Iraq because of the demonstrations
It has been a month since popular demonstrations broke out in the provinces of Iraq, especially Baghdad and the south. The people expressed their opinion clearly in their political and electoral system and in the performance of the government and the required reforms, whether political, human rights or service. The demonstrations were accompanied by joyful and joyful images of the sophistication and comfort of the Iraqis. The demonstrations turned into popular festivals in which the security forces and the demonstrators joined in a wonderful unity and cooperation that preserved the popularity and peaceful nature of the demonstrations.
The first is the continuation of casualties on both sides, albeit in fewer numbers than the first ten days, but every drop of blood is spilled and expensive and painful and must be stopped.
The second is the continued exposure of numbers of outlaws to the security forces seeking to protect the demonstrators and public and private interests in the country. These groups have nothing to do with the demonstrations but cover them up and use them as human shields to carry out banditry, arson, looting and clashes with security forces using Molotov cocktails, catapults and even grenades, firearms, knives and others. We commissioned an investigative committee headed by the Minister of Health and governmental and non-governmental bodies to investigate the types of equipment used by the security forces when defending their positions, especially tear bombs. The instructions remain strict not to use live bullets or any lethal weapons, and that the security forces do not carry out any acts of attack or offensive, but stand the defense against attacks by outlaws, whether to break into the barriers of security forces in the bridges of the Republic and Senk and others, or in the attack on the headquarters and interests Government and civil society in Baghdad and the provinces.

The security forces have invited many demonstrators, activists and organizations to come to the ranks of the security repulsion to see the size of the attacks and methods and violence by the outlaws.

The demonstrations achieved many of their purposes and prompted the three authorities to review their positions. There was widespread political mobility, and numerous resolutions were passed to meet many of the demands made by the demonstrators. Demonstrations have received great popular, civic and trade union support, and the political system has been rocked to be one of the most important events that demonstrate that freedoms are responsibilities. It is the basic tool for the people to evaluate their rulers, express their opinion and realize their just demands. Therefore, the supreme religious authority defended peaceful demonstrations, so we must continue to protect and support peaceful demonstrations and distinguish between them and the outlaws. I met with a large number of demonstrators and thanked them for their pressure and the importance of renouncing violence for the success of the reformist demands and the continued peaceful popular pressure on the government and political forces to be able to succeed against the system of quotas and special privileges and corruption and to overcome the obstructionist approach that delays the achievement you demand.

Dear people .. It has been a month in which interests, schools, universities and a major part of public life have been disrupted. It is time for life to return to normal. To open all markets, interests, laboratories, schools and universities. Demonstrations and other legal practices of expression without affecting public and private life and interests are up to you. Your presence in the fields and your expression of opinion support us in presenting and implementing reforms, which is one of the most important factors of reform and pressure, if it took place peacefully and legally.

The most important thing here is to isolate the saboteurs from your peaceful movement. We postponed the Baghdad International Fair for a period of time because of the situation .. and delayed the completion of the submission of the 2020 budget. Not to mention the internal interests that have been stalled by the events and which have been subjected to significant losses, which requires a rapid return to normal functioning. The threat of oil interests and the blocking of some roads to Iraq's ports cause huge losses exceeding billions, and delay the arrival of goods, and this and others raise the prices paid by all citizens and the poor in particular and disrupt the provision of jobs and the growth of the economy and put patients at risk because of the closure of medical clinics and obstruct the movement of ambulances, and lose Because of them students important study days with the need to complete the curriculum and prepare for examinations, especially the ministerial ones, and delays the completion of citizens' transactions by disrupting the work of service departments, and cut off the livelihoods of people, especially shop owners and workers wage daily, and weaken the Endeavors to achieve decent living and social justice for this decent people.

We reduced the curfew hours. What is most important for the government is the return of normal life, while ensuring the protection of the rights of citizens, including the right to peaceful demonstrations in the designated places and the prevention of arson and assault whatever.

Iraqi PM Says Most of Protestors’ Demands Met

Basnews English 03/11/2019 - 22:04 Published in Iraq

ERBIL — Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi released a statement overnight on Sunday calling for the end of demonstrations, saying most of the demands of the protestors have already been met by the authorities.

People in Baghdad and other southern Iraqi provinces took to the streets in early October to call for jobs, public services, and effective measures to fight corruption. Since mid-October thousands occupied the Tahrir Square to stage a sit-in strike until their demands are met.

PM Adil Abdul Mahdi said in his statement that “it is time to go back to a normal life”. He argued that the main achievement of the protests is that authorities in Baghdad, including executive, legislative, and judicial authorities are reconsidering their performance and position.

Abdul Mahdi also pointed out that the state has already lost billions at the result of the prolonged protests which caused a halt to some businesses in the oil sector as well as small public businesses.

He warned that a further continued demonstration will cause a greater financial harm to Iraq.

It is time for life to go back to normal’: Iraqi PM on protests

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Iraqis must resume their pre-protest lives and allow reform to be implemented, Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi said Sunday in response to continuing protests nationwide.

“A month, in which interests, schools, universities, and a main part of public life came to a halt, has passed. It is time for life to go back to normal, for markets, interests, schools, and universities to open their doors,” Iraq’s Prime Minister said in a statement.

Iraqis have protested a lack of services, corruption, cronyism, nepotism, unemployment for years. Baghdad’s Tahrir Square, a focal point of Iraqi discontent, even saw demonstrations during the country’s war against the Islamic State (ISIS).

However, burgeoning protests led by the country’s youth were met with deadly force from Iraqi security forces, killing over 100 people in a week of protest beginning October 1. Protests then entered a brief hiatus period, due to the Arbaeen pilgrimage undertaken by Iraq’s Shiite Muslims.

A second round of protests began on October 25. Iraqi demands grew to include a full overthrow of the government, constitutional amendments, and a new electoral law, among other demands for deep-rooted, systematic change.

More than 250 Iraqis have lost their lives in the two rounds of protest.

Security forces are known to have shot protesters with live ammunition rounds and military-grade tear gas canisters, to international condemnation.

Iraq’s premier has since said he is willing to step aside once his replacement is lined up.

Protester tactics have included the blockade of roads leading to key ports including Umm Qasr in the southern city of Basra, where Iraqis have blocked entrance since Tuesday.

Such actions will have long-term adverse effects on everyday Iraqis by halting the arrival of goods to the country, leading to increased prices, reasoned Abdul-Mahdi. “All the people pay the price, especially the poor.”

Unrest has suspended scheduled economic events in the country, including the Baghdad International Fair and presentation of the 2020 national budget bill in parliament, Abdul-Mahdi said, and is discouraging “worried” investors “both domestic and foreign” from investing in the country.

Government measures have been taken to facilitate a return to normality, the PM added.

“We have decreased the curfew hours. The important thing for the government is the return of normal life, with the keenness to protect the rights of the people, including that of peaceful protests in dedicated locations and preventing arson and assault,” he said.

Return to everyday life need not bring a complete end to ‘legal’ forms of protest, he contended.

“As for protests or other legal practices to express opinion without affecting life or public and private interests, then that is up to you, and this is one of your rights.”

“Your presence in the squares and expressing your opinion supports us in presenting reforms and implementing them, and it is one of the most essential factors of reform and pressure if done legally in a correct manner,” Abdul-Mahdi said.

LMAO!!! This clown still doesn’t get it, at this point I’m thinking the protesters could give a rats azz about a fair. For Mahdi to bring up the cost of this demonstration really shows he is in way over his head.
I’m not sure if the Iraqi citizens will let a foreign government fill the PM position for them this time. The USA put Maliki in an Iran put Mahdi in, I think the citizens need to put this one in...
