ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Iraq has canceled a scheduled parliament session to vote on a reform package amid ongoing nationwide protests, sources said on Saturday.

Sources told Kurdistan 24 that the “emergency” parliamentary session scheduled for Saturday afternoon was postponed because of an absence of deputies.

Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi has called on parliament to vote on several reform measures to calm the anger of protesters. The Iraqi Parliament had previously said it would hold a session after the protests.

Demonstrations across Iraq began calmly on Friday but quickly turned violent, eventually resulting in the death of 42 people.

 

Friday’s chaos followed several days of calm after a week-long wave of deadly protests, which left at least 140 people dead and thousands more injured.

In the days following the first surge of protests, Abdul Mahdi attempted to calm demonstrators with promises of reform and a cabinet shuffle. 

So far, such moves have failed to quell the anger of the public, which continues to call for a complete governmental overhaul amid shortages of public services, high rates of unemployment, and chronic institutional corruption. 

The cancellation of Saturday’s session is expected to lead to further escalation as protests continue around the country.

Sources in Baghdad told Kurdistan 24 that demonstrators had gathered in public squares as well as in other areas across several southern provinces.

Protesters accuse Abdul Mahdi’s government of failing to fight corruption and improve services in the country.

Why would Iran ever want an rv, that would only help

empower there enemy’s. When they rob Iraq of everything, they make all they need and finance there terrorism and become more powerful.

i agree stanleypower we just dont know what we dont know the iranian goi members imo steal huge amounts of money ( USD ) thru funded projects or fake contracts that never happen and every corrupt deal weakens iraq whoever commits it we are all simply just speculating on a very volatile situation hoping for a positive , just like many countries have around the world iraq has had more help than i can remember to make it and so far they seem to wreck every opportunity

No surprise here. They can't break their mindset of stealing all they can, while stepping on the poor citizens. They've cancelled GOI session for less: cafeteria menu, sandstorms, re-runs on TV. Kudos to the members that actually showed up in hopes of getting something accomplished. This puts a real damper on the budget, monetary reform, replacing proxy positions. All the time, most gov officials are busy still stuffing their pockets with $$$ and the auctions continue, as the poor suffer. "

The Special Representative of the United Nations in Iraq, Ms. Hennes Blachart, called on the House of Representatives to carry out its duties to fulfill the demands of the demonstrators.

This came during a meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives Mohammed Halbousi, on Saturday, Blaskhart.
"During the meeting, they discussed the latest political and security developments and the demonstrations taking place in the country," a statement from his office said.
He added that "the meeting stressed the need to expedite the fulfillment of legitimate demands of citizens in accordance with a specific time limit, and improve public services, and work to eliminate corruption and spoilers, and take legal action against them and resolve this file, and create an environment for growth, and provide employment opportunities."
He also urged the meeting to maintain peaceful demonstrations, and the obligation to preserve public and private property, and not to attack demonstrators and security forces, and to prevent saboteurs from creating a gap between them and create a state of chaos that weakens the momentum of true demands, and the need to hold accountable the perpetrators of violence, and the imposition of the law. .
She expressed "deep concern about armed groups working to undermine stability in the country, which negatively affects the right to peaceful demonstration and fulfill the legitimate demands of demonstrators for change and the ability of the government to work to meet those demands, and stressed the importance of the House of Representatives to fulfill its duties To realize the legitimate demands of the demonstrators, while revealing the willingness of the United Nations to provide the necessary assistance in this context. "

Someday, someone is going to write a book about post USA invasion Iraq from 2005 onwards. It will be a scathing indictment not only of Iraq; but I hope attention will be brought to bear on the IMF, World Bank and anyone else  ( USA - and WHY and on who insistence did we install Maliki ? ) that didn't or wouldn't step in and bring pressure onto these fools from the beginning.

Might be a great time for the protesters to just move into Parliament and literally take over, specially since it is sitting there so vacant! The protestors could easily take over the duties of the little scared chicadees with them on the run!!
