BAGHDAD, Oct 15, 2019 (AFP) - President Barham Salih said on Tuesday that the amendment of the election law is an "urgent national merit", noting that Iraq is on the verge of major transformations and in need of major reforms.

The Presidency said in a statement that "President Barham Saleh received on Tuesday, representatives of the United Nations and the Electoral Commission and a number of university professors, media professionals, activists and specialists and legal experts."

The statement quoted Saleh as saying that "this meeting, which takes place in very complex circumstances and the country is going through great challenges with the purpose of dialogue with experts and specialists to listen through them to national public opinion first before meeting with political forces and blocs in this regard," stressing that "listening to different visions helps To reach logical amendments to the law that serve the public interest of our people in all its components and serve as a platform for reforming the political system.

Saleh stressed that `` the reluctance of voters to participate in the recent elections is clear evidence of the need to amend the General Election Law as it represents an urgent national entitlement to build the state and reform its institutions and eliminate financial and administrative corruption to meet the aspirations and will of the people and to promote freedom and democracy in the country. ''

He added, "Iraq is on the verge of major transformations and we need major reforms that restore confidence in the system of governance in the country, the most important review of the electoral system in a serious and meaningful way that provides Iraqis with a guaranteed opportunity to express their vision about their country without diminishing and manipulation."
