The protesters are taking a stand against a lack of jobs, corruption and poor public services. Living conditions were impacted by the war against the Islamic State, which took control of large parts of the country in 2014.

SULAIMANI — Amid an outbreak of protests in central and southern Iraq, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said on Friday (October 4) that there are many problems in the country and that it takes time to solve them.

“We are not pleased about the violence and incidents in the protests In Baghdad and some of the other governorates,” Barzani said.

“Peaceful protesting is a constitutional right, but it cannot shift into violence and chaos that endangers national security or tries to abolish the institutes of the government,” he added

“The problems in Iraq were not formed in a day. They are the accumulation of bad choices and mistakes by the government in the past and no government can solve them in a day.”

Barzani emphasized the importance of not getting distracted from the task of rebuilding the country following the devastating war against Islamic State.

“Iraq is going through a delicate phase now and it needs tranquility and peace,” he said. “With events going out of control the situation will become worse and all the nations and factions in Iraq will be disturbed and damaged.”

Protests have rocked central and southern Iraq since Tuesday, leaving dozens dead and hundreds wounded.

They have not spread to the Kurdistan Region so far, but many of the same systemic conditions that motivated the protests are also present in the Region, such as endemic corruption, high youth unemployment, and poor public services.

Does this look like stability to you???

We now have stable incompetence. Stable incompetence is not what we need. Unstable is fine if it brings in better leaders and good change. We'll see.

what Barzani is omitting is these bad goi actors of the past are still involved with the goi today just in different  positions or still running there Bad agendas thru different puppets they made sure were elected , my gosh man the people are fed up with the corruption iraq has to make changes now and stop the cronyism and its brother nepotism ... thanks 6ly410

Cronyism is the practice of partiality in awarding jobs and other advantages to friends or trusted colleagues, especially in politics and between politicians and supportive organizations. For instance, this includes appointing "cronies" to positions of authority, regardless of their qualifications.

For Iraqis info, Japan and West Germany has done a lot around 16 years after their defeat in WW2 including rebuilding the countries and war reparations. They also has many things to bear on but become pillar of world economic nowdays. We are not speaks out of illusion but by the facts. If all corruptors return back the Iraqis money, all the rebuilding Iraq can be done less then 2 years with usd 450 billion when it return back. For example, Iraq can build solar power tech for electricity since they located at desert. Dam for water supply. New and latest public transportation including speed magnetic train for their citizen and their products. All the basic needs can be done by latest tech with affordable price if join venture with other developing countries. All of these will improve Iraq economic almost instantly and their growth will be exponential. With that, from usd 450 billion will be easily surpass usd trillions if they also do secondary industries base on their resources instead of exporting their raw material. They are many countries willingly to JV if they reduce their corruption to very minimum levels. Only idiots are just ****** usd 450 billion for their own purpose.

A great place for Mahdi to start would be to end the auctions. Instead of protestors raiding Parliament, they should be going for the actually auctions. That and get those snipers guns aimed at Maliki’s head. If he is so powerful that he is unaccountable, as a protestor, I‘d be looking to settle that score first. He is like a giant Albatross tied around the people of Iraq’s neck. He continues to bring the country down, and will until he is either dead or tried for his crimes. Thousands of dead Iraqis would agree I’m sure!!!

Iraqi Prime Minister pledges a package of reforms to calm the anger of the demonstrators

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The Iraqi government issued a series of "important" decisions overnight at an extraordinary session chaired by Adel Abdul-Mahdi in response to demands from participants in five days of bloody protests that killed nearly 100 people and wounded thousands, according to official statistics.

An unprecedented protest movement erupted in Baghdad and several southern provinces, condemning government performance and demanding the prosecution of corrupt people, fighting unemployment and providing public services.

The new decisions included 17 paragraphs, most notably facilitating access to residential land and building new units, in addition to granting 175 thousand dinars (about $ 145) per month to the unemployed for three months.

The decisions also included the establishment of modern marketing complexes in commercial areas in Baghdad and the provinces.

Before the protests began, the Iraqi authorities launched campaigns to remove the indiscriminate housing overruns of three million poor people amid harsh and unsanitary conditions without providing an alternative.

A young man died in the city of Kut, south of Baghdad, after he set fire to his body after the confiscation of his vehicle, and this was one of the sparks that led to the outbreak of demonstrations in the country.

The cabinet decided to consider the victims of the demonstrations as "martyrs" and give their families "privileges of martyrs." He also opened the door to volunteer for the army and return those whose contracts were terminated after the Islamic State's invasion in 2014.

He directed the Council of Ministers to implement the measures and decided to discuss the second package on reforms at the next session.

The demonstrations that began last Tuesday witnessed violence, gunfire and burning of a number of political party headquarters, which the demonstrators accuse of being behind the acts of corruption in the country. In return, Iraqi authorities accused "unidentified snipers" of shooting at security forces and civilians.

Protesters in Iraq confirm snipers in the streets of Baghdad, but so far these snipers remain "unidentified" according to the authorities. The main demand of the families of the victims, who live in grief and mourning after the killing of their children with live ammunition during the demonstrations, to identify the snipers and the party behind them. For its part, the Iraqi government announced that it had opened an investigation to reveal all the details of this file.

Legal expert confirms: What happened to the activists is "kidnappings" and not arrest

Baghdad / ... Legal expert Ali al-Tamimi, said Thursday, that the absence of activists over the past few days were kidnappings and not legal arrests.
Al-Tamimi told "Eye of Iraq News," that "there was no kidnapping, this is a non-governmental and the law says that the arrest or arrest only by a decision of the investigating judge in the sense that the body that takes activists and interrogated with them is a non-governmental", noting that " The state should investigate to find out these actors, especially in cooperation with the released activists who were kidnapped to find out who is kidnapped and called the "deep state" and here is a disaster to be a state within the state.
"This is not only a kidnapping, it is a compound kidnapping because that body is not a state, nor is it a gang, since the gangs demand a ransom in return for release," he said.
It is noteworthy that many activists in the demonstrations and in various governorates have been kidnapped during the past period and by unknown armed parties, while some of them who talked about being held by an unknown security agency for interrogation on various charges, most notably receiving support from abroad, while not Official authorities never comment on these incidents. Finished 2
