BAGHDAD: A family member of a popular Iraqi blogger says authorities have detained him, apparently over his coverage of anti-government protests.
The family member, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals, said heavily armed masked gunmen stormed the apartment of Shujaa Al-Khafaji in Baghdad at dawn Thursday and took him away.
Al-Khafaji, 29, runs a popular Facebook page called “Brothers Iraq” that focuses on human rights violations.
On Tuesday the Facebook page, which has 2.1 million likes, posted a video that showed what it said were people setting a checkpoint on fire after the protesters had left. It blamed government supporters for the fire.
The relative said Al-Khafaji received threats from unknown people in recent days warning him not to publish posts about the protests.

Reuters sources learned that the leaders of these militias acted spontaneously in order to put down demonstrations against the government headed by Adel Abdul Mahdi, supported by armed groups and political factions supported by Iran.
A source said they had verified evidence indicating that the snipers were elements of militias who "report directly to their commander rather than the commander of the armed forces." They belong to a group very close to the Iranians.
The second source, who Reuters said was attending government security meetings, said black-clad militiamen assaulted protesters on the third day of unrest.
He added that these gunmen were under the command of Abu Zainab al-Lami, a leader in the Popular Mobilization, and he was tasked with the task of "crushing demonstrations by a group of other leaders."

Iraq has lost its membership in the Human Rights Council, an informed source said Thursday.

The source said in an interview for Alsumaria News, that " Iraq has lost its membership in the Human Rights Council during the elections held in the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York ."

He added that " Iraq did not get only 121 voted lags behind Andonossia 174 voice and Japan and the Republic of Korea 165 and the voice of the Marshall Islands 123 where the voice of the vacant seats for the Group of Asian States , four and five was the number of applicants."

On December 9, 2016, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry announced that Iraq had won the post of Vice-President of the UN Human Rights Council.

Not looking good for MP Mahdi and the rest of his Iranian / Maliki backed puppet government.

IMHO :  He / they have been stalling the RV,  including the "APPOINTED" governor of the CBI (Central Bank of Iraq) thru the CBI currency auctions

Time for these guys to go :butt-kicking:

Iraq loses membership in the Human Rights Council

Great going Iraq . . . keep screwing up.

This takes real talent. Iraq . . . you're going backwards - YOU'RE GOING BACKWARDS !

This government has dug it's heels in so deep, steadfastly belligerent beyond measure and up 'til now and including today, a total unwillingness to do right by the people.

Looks like ( maybe ? ) they figure to ride it out past the "deadlines" and carry on with business ( corruption ) as usual. For the GOI to ignore & dismiss the recent events; YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN PERIL.

New York - United Nations General Assembly

Five countries - Indonesia, Iraq, Japan, the Marshall Islands and the Republic of Korea - were fielded today as candidates for the Asia-Pacific region, competing for four seats on the Human Rights Council . After the vote, Iraq failed to get the support it needed. Although he was a member of the current session was removed from the membership of the Council and some permanent members of the Security Council sought to re-nominate.

Activists spoke to our site that the widespread repression of popular protests in the first week of this month aborted Iraq's efforts to win membership of the Human Rights Council.
