ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdish lawmakers from the Gorran (Change) Movement in the Iraqi parliament on Saturday called on Baghdad to prepare an “urgent” reform project amid nationwide protests that have resulted in the deaths of close to 100 people.

“The demonstrations by unarmed Iraqi citizens are the result of the accumulation of years of waste of Iraq’s wealth by the hundreds of billions due to the corruption of successive authoritarian elites, the lack of basic services, unemployment, and the weakening of citizens’ confidence in the democratic process due to the rigging of general and local elections,” Gorran said in a statement.

“We in the Gorran parliamentary bloc support the legitimate demands of the demonstrators and strongly condemn the use of live rounds to counter them,” continued the statement, which called on Baghdad “to prepare an actual and urgent reform and ministerial changes necessary as soon as possible to be voted on in parliament.”

On Thursday, Amnesty International sternly rebuked Iraqi security forces’ violent response to the demonstrations, saying, “The Iraqi government must immediately order security forces to stop using excessive, including lethal, force against protesters."

Lawmakers are expected to hold an extraordinary session to discuss the protests, which, in their first four days, led to the deaths of 93 protesters or security forces, the injury of 3,870, and the arrest of 567, according to UN figures.

Earlier on Saturday, Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi met with purported representatives of the demonstrators from various parts of the country to hear their demands in preparation for the special session.

Gorran stated that the parliament convening “without a project and a clear road map for change and radical reform would not lead to the resolution of problems and could worsen the situation further.”

On Friday, influential cleric Muqtada al-Sadr—who commands a coalition that makes up about half of parliament—called for snap elections and the resignation of the government led by Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi. Sadr also blamed politicians in general for the violence that has engulfed the country, the worst since Abdul Mahdi's predecessor proclaimed the Islamic State defeated in late 2017.

On Thursday evening, Abdul Mahdi responded to the protests by promising a minimum income scheme for Iraqi citizens, saying, “The protesters have the right to demand an end to corruption, but it takes time for change to take place.”

The prime minister asserted there was no “magic solution” to the problems of governance and abuse of power in Iraq but vowed to try to pass a law that would give low-income families a basic income.

Early Saturday morning, state media announced that Abdul Mahdi had lifted a curfew that had been in effect since Wednesday.

I have to say that I had not realized how much things had deteriorated in Iraq over the last five days. I guess that I was too focused on politics in our own country. This political unrest in Iraq deserves monitoring as I could see this going one of two ways:

1) Gives the PTB a reason to pull the RV lever.

2) Gives the PTB a justification to hold off for a while until things have settled back down.

Let's hope it's not the later.

Everything that has happened is what is needed to propel this country to prosperity.

International currency has to happen to bring all of the demands to fruition.

The loss of life and injuries at the hands of the government is abominable.
The PM should resign. The judicial needs to step up and prosecute the corrupt. The government needs to be locked into the cafeteria and forgotten about. The new government Should be elected and not paid until the citizens approve there pay checks.

The uprising continues in Baghdad and southern cities and more than 100 dead

Iraqi lawmakers and activists accused Iranian snipers of killing protesters in Iraq. Liberal MP Faiq Sheikh Ali accused Iran of killing protesters in Iraq as a sniper. In a tweet on Twitter, the Iraqi MP wrote: "Iran is snarling us." The MP continued: «It is no longer a secret to anyone, Imam Gomaa Tehran explicitly said the phrase reducing the policy of his state: Kill the American agents Iraqi demonstrators». The deputy in the tweet docking between the demonstrators and the Iraqi security forces, hinting that the Iranian snipers harvested together. "Protesters and security forces ... do not kill each other," he said. "But snipers who are on the roof snip them together." Iraqi security forces and demonstrators spoke of unidentified snipers on rooftops in Baghdad killing victims on both sides, but it was unclear what the snipers were. Iraqi activists did not rule out that Iran was behind the sniping of demonstrators "with the aim of shuffling the cards." Former parliamentarian Mithal al-Alusi told al-Hurra television that snipers were scattered around Baghdad and "killed two protesters and two armed forces" on Friday. He added: «terrorist named Qasim Soleimani and the Iranian embassy security advisers are managing a file, perhaps snipers and networks of killing civilians, in order to mix the cards». An unidentified Iraqi activist told Alhurra that he had received "unconfirmed" information about the presence of Iranian snipers in Baghdad. Iraqi political activist Ali Karim did not rule out Iran's involvement in sniping operations, but it was likely through the Iraqi militias loyal to them. About one hundred dead in the Iraqi protests .. Sadr calls for the resignation of the government

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Demonstrations renewed on Saturday in Baghdad as the curfew and Internet blocking continued to be lifted after four days of demanding protests and clashes that killed more than 100 people in the capital and southern provinces.

Five people were killed in fresh clashes between demonstrators and police in Baghdad, police and medical sources told Reuters yesterday.

Earlier reports said 93 people were killed and about 4,000 wounded, most of them demonstrators, during four days of protests.

The Iraqi parliament was supposed to hold a session at 1 pm in order to consider the demands of the demonstrators, but it was not held yet because the quorum is not available after the decision of Muqtada al-Sadr's boycott.

With 54 deputies, Sadr's bloc represents the largest parliamentary bloc in parliament. Sadr took on the basic demands of the demonstrators, calling for the overthrow of the government.

On Friday evening, parliament speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi made a speech in which he made proposals to recruit young people and provide new social assistance. He also vowed that if promises were not made as soon as possible, "I will take off my jacket and join the demonstrators."

As authorities demanded demonstrators a period of time to implement reforms and improve living conditions for 40 million people in war-weary Iraq, unemployment and corruption, Sadr called for "early elections under the supervision of the United Nations."

On the street, the protesters' targets have been clear since Tuesday. "Nobody represents us, they come with people in uniform and put them in parliament," one of them told AFP on Friday evening, blinding his forehead with an Iraqi flag. He added: «We no longer want parties, we do not want anyone speaking in our name».

This is an invitation received by Sadr with ears, and was keen to call on his supporters to organize «peaceful sit-ins» and at the same time to maintain the nature of the «popular» protests and not to turn them into «stream».

Iraqi politician Fener Haddad said Iraqi politicians, some of whom have been in office for 16 years, found themselves facing an unprecedented movement. He stressed that «these demonstrations against the regime» different from the traditional summer protests demanding electricity and water in the second oil-exporting countries in OPEC.

Haddad pointed out that «this is the first time that we hear the people demanding the overthrow of the system» based on sectarian and ethnic quotas for positions in addition to favoritism.

What the demonstrators are currently waiting for is "decisive amendments and decisions, and the dismissal and accountability of large names of politicians accused of corruption," according to security analyst Sarmad al-Bayati.

As the parliamentary session approached, and ahead of the traditional renewed demonstrations in the afternoon, shops reopened yesterday in several neighborhoods of the capital.

Cafe patrons have returned to their daily routines, while cleaners have begun lifting traces of burning tires in the streets.

It was evident on Friday the high prices of food and vegetables, such as tomatoes, which jumped from one thousand Iraqi dinars to three thousand dinars.

In the center of the capital, home to about nine million people, the roads leading to Tahrir Square, where the demonstrations began Tuesday, witnessed a heavy security deployment with the deployment of armored vehicles. For the population, the possibility of new confrontations still exists.

"If life does not improve, the protests will be stronger and the situation will be worse," Abu Salah, 70, told AFP.

In Cairo, Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit expressed his "concern" and expressed "deep regret over the loss of victims and wounded among the demonstrators as well as the security forces" and offered condolences to their families.

He said in a statement that he looked forward to «the Iraqi government to do everything that would calm the situation and the immediate start of a serious and genuine dialogue leading to the removal of the reasons for the demonstration».

For its part, France called on the Iraqi authorities to «disclose the circumstances of the deaths of about 100 people since Tuesday», a note «adherence to the right of peaceful demonstration and the importance of an equal response by the security forces» and that «encourages the Iraqi authorities to disclose the circumstances of the violence», according to Assistant Foreign Ministry spokesman French.

The spokesman expressed «France's support the efforts of the Iraqi government in bringing stability and reconstruction and development of public facilities for the benefit of all the population of Iraq».

Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi (Reuters)

A final nail in the coffin of Adel Abdul-Mahdi's government beats Muqtada al-Sadr.

This government, from which the members of the founding Shiite coalition, consisting of a majority Shiite, is divided into lists (Sairoun, Fatah, victory, and the rule of law), with the support of the majority (Kurdish Alliance, Shiite Alliance), which is the prime minister for four terms In a row, it enabled him to chart the course of government by taking the post of prime minister, who holds the executive and financial management of the state, the post of commander-in-chief of the armed forces and two ministries of interior and oil, with a package of ministerial positions of service.

Does Abdul-Mahdi endure the general collapse of the current ministry that has practiced the precedent of deliberate murder of peaceful protesters? Or was his ministerial portfolio behind the impending collapse?

Although Abdul-Mahdi came with reformist conditions titled "Stopping Public Corruption", which is gnawing at the state and marking the ministries that preceded him in a coalition that is part of his components as a former vice president who assumed the sovereign oil portfolio for the Shiite component, he presented himself as a reformist who supported his nomination. The religious leader, who also raised her hand by calling for "the formation of a non-corrupt ministry of independent individuals", has repudiated his support in practice.

Abdul Mahdi did not complete his request to rule on his procedures in running a ministry that was described as the legitimate heir of corruption, by adopting quotas, which divided the wealth in shares of the three components, and presented crumbs to the people who are waiting to stop the wheel of great corruption, which fell to the presidencies that carved 43 percent of General budget expenditures on the presidencies of the 112 billion of public expenditures, of which 17 percent is deducted to the Kurdistan region, and operating expenses and salaries paid to more than eight million employees, the largest consumer of the budget in the history of the country, appointed by various motives Yeh particular election, in addition to reducing unemployment in the country, has registered a deficit of $ 23 billion in the rentier economy depends on oil revenues, mostly.

However, Abdul Mahdi, who came from China by the largest delegation in the history of Iraqi governments since the founding of the state in 1921, amounted to eighty ministers and undersecretaries, directors and advisers signed memorandums of understanding with the Chinese government and private sector companies, and came victorious leaking news of his ministry out of US economic and sovereign hegemony with Iranian support, He found the Iraqi street full of demonstrators with testimonials, chanting against his government, which does not care about the holders of higher degrees, and instead of hearing their demands they were confronted with spraying with hot water, tear gas and beatings, at a time when thousands of demolished Pew The slums of the slums are thrown into the streets!

Why do Iraqis rise up?

Representatives of demonstrators in Iraq demand Halbousi to resign in a "stormy" meeting
This led the popular movement to sympathize with the disadvantaged marginalized masses on October 1 in the streets of the capital and the central and southern governorates, with a surprising growing authority that chose to distribute contracts, positions and jobs to loyalists and affiliates to its allied parties without adopting economic plans to save the country from a revolution. Hungry and disadvantaged and secure a decent standard of living.

Strangely enough, Abdul Mahdi, in his speech, which was delayed until dawn on Friday, instead of telling the people who are the corrupt people who caused the hardship of the people suffering, he started counting his achievements by lifting the concrete barriers in Baghdad, and that he took his headquarters close to the people outside the fortified Green Zone. It is as if people do not know what is happening behind the green fences in the palaces of the state built by Saddam Hussein, where billions of contracts are concluded.

Public outrage has exceeded Adel Abdul Mahdi to parties that have lost the rights of citizens, linked their program to Iran, weakened the interests of Iraqis, paralyzed their factories and agriculture, and made the Iraqi economy rentier limited to accommodating the population development that exceeded 35 million people.

The demands of the demonstrators went beyond the limits of compatibility with the political process and reform to stop working mechanisms and demanding the amendment of the Constitution and the holding of general elections that will not allow all corrupt participants in the previous elections to run for office and administrations, may affect even many political and religious symbols, according to the famous Sadr Kala), to start a new era in Iraq where young leaders take charge of the symbols of the corrupt, and bring them to justice for their negligence in the present and future of Iraq and waste a fortune of up to a billion dollars.

The United Nations Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) has called for the cessation of violence associated with the escalating popular protests and the accountability of those responsible.

"I am deeply saddened by the unexplained loss of life, five days ago, and reports of deaths and injuries," the mission said in a statement issued by its head, Jenin Hennes Blaschaert.

She stressed that “this must stop”, calling on all parties to “stop and think”.

For the sixth day in a row, anti-government protests continued in Baghdad and the south of the country, with widespread violence that left more than 100 people dead and thousands injured.

Iraq has been witnessing violent protests since Tuesday, which began from Baghdad to demand better public services and the provision of jobs and fight corruption, before spreading to the provinces in the south.
