Baghdad - Writings

Unusual insistence on the part of Iraqis to continue demonstrations and escalation against the Iraqi government even as night falls in Tahrir Square in central Baghdad.

Video footage of demonstrations on Wednesday, October 2, 2019, revealed the unprecedented increase in the number of demonstrators in the Iraqi capital Baghdad and surrounding the Baghdad airport and the Green Zone.

Footage circulated on social media sites revealed the growing Iraqi rejection of Iranian control of power in the country, through anti-Iranian slogans and the burning of the Iranian flag.

Other footage revealed that a masked group attempted to sabotage the demonstrations and fabricate intentional clashes with security forces and others carrying heavy weapons in the face of the demonstrators.

There were also calls for the international community and the world to intervene to support the Iraqi demonstrations to get out of the Iranian mantle, restore sovereignty to the people, exclude corruption and hold corrupt people accountable.

But with all these protests, Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi found only a curfew in the capital Baghdad since 5 dawn on Thursday, October 3, 2019 until further notice, according to Reuters news agency.

Iran on Thursday closed the Khosravi and attractive border crossings with Iraq because of the development of security conditions, according to the RT correspondent in Iran.

Qasem Rezaei, commander of Iranian border guards, said that "the Khosravi and the attractive border with Iraq have been closed since yesterday for security reasons."

It should be noted that some sources on Twitter pointed out that "Secretary of the Committee of Forty in # Iran Ahmad Mohammadi fled : # Khosravi border crossing with ## Iraq is closed at the request of the Iraqi side"

This comes after sources in the Iraqi police said that 11 people, including one policeman, were killed during protests in cities in southern Iraq last night.
Late Wednesday, Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi announced a complete curfew on individuals and vehicles in Baghdad from 5 am Thursday until further notice.

It is worth mentioning that the Khosravi crossing linking the city of Qasr Shirin in the Iranian province of Kermanshah to the province of Diyala , reopened two weeks ago after a closure lasted six years ago for security reasons.

BAGHDAD - Mawazine News

Parliament Speaker Mohammad al-Halbousi called the coordinators of the demonstrations to attend Saturday's session.
A parliamentary source said that Halbousi invited the coordinators of the demonstrations to attend Saturday's session.
Halbousi said according to the source that the duty is to protect citizens and maintain property.
The Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi announced on Wednesday night, a curfew in Baghdad, as demonstrators continue to gather in the center of the capital for the second day of bloody protests.
The curfew, which runs from 5 am on Thursday until further notice, will affect "wheels and personnel in Baghdad."

The government, formed nearly a year ago, appears to have made a firm choice in the face of its first public exam, although this has not discouraged protesters who continued their influx into central rallying points in Baghdad and several southern cities.
Five demonstrators were shot dead on Wednesday evening in Nasiriyah, Dhi Qar province, in addition to a policeman, the day after a demonstrator was martyred in the city, 300 km south of Baghdad, according to a local official, without identifying the sources of fire.
On the other hand, two demonstrators were martyred since Tuesday in Baghdad, where the protests extended to more than six neighborhoods in the capital.
Demonstrators in several districts of Baghdad set tires and cut off key roads.
This came as the three presidencies (President Barham Saleh, Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi and Parliament Speaker Mohammed Halbousi) held an urgent meeting to "discuss the mechanism to respond to the demands of the protesters," while Iraqi Defense Minister Najah al-Shammari, on Wednesday, to prepare all military sectors to preserve the sovereignty of the state and facilities Government, vital targets, embassies and all diplomatic missions.

Talk about a mistake. The citizens already know how corrupt, inept the GOI really is. And with hundreds of laws waiting for discussion and approval, the GOI sits on their hands while taking 2 week breaks. They should be meeting every day to get their country into the 21st century and taking care of their citizens. Yet, they do nothing. I can just see it now. Leaders of the demonstrations show up, there is lack of quorum, attending members head to the cafeteria, demonstrators feast on camel burgers.

Good question, however, and more to the point ; with the excrement striking the oscillating windmill ( it's the technical term for Poop Hitting the Fan ;) ), what sort of deleterious effect [ if any ] will this situation have on our investment ?

With all the due respect, Horsesoldier...These Folks are fighting to better their lives as their average daily situation is horrible ( for the 99% majority of them)....

Sorry but that's a lot more important and the real priority there...A thousand ( at least) times more than our investment....Talk about something deleterious...That's the way they have to live!

FYI....I'have been invested for 15 years myself....Patience is the first thing a  Iraqi Dinar holder must have or he/she will be esxposed to a very high risk of a nervous breakdown......
