The UN is facing its worst financial crisis in a decade

Al-Ahd News- Continue

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations said on Friday it was facing its worst financial crisis in a decade and that it may be unable to pay its staff by the end of this month.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres sent a letter to UN staff outlining looming austerity measures, which he said would mean fewer flights, receptions, documents, reports, translations and even water refrigerators, as well as restricting employment.

Guterres described the current crisis as "the worst monetary crisis facing the United Nations in almost a decade," warning that the organization "is in danger of depleting its reserves of liquidity by the end of this month and default on payments of staff."

Reporters said austerity measures were visible at the organization's headquarters in New York, such as the stopping of escalators and the absence of central heating, and even the restaurant for diplomats is closed at 5 pm.

"There will be an impact on the work of the Organization in various aspects. Instead of focusing on our priorities, we are preoccupied with how to prioritize expenditures," said Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric's spokesman.

"We really don't have a choice," said Catherine Pollard, the organization's management official.

The United Nations has revealed a deficit of $ 1.4 billion in its operational budget for the year and has blamed the funding gap on 64 countries in arrears.

Only seven of these countries accounted for 90% of the deficit, the first being the United States, which owed more than $ 1 billion, followed by Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Iran, Israel and Venezuela.

"When the rich refuse to pay, it is the poor who bear the burden," said a UN official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

At the 18th Doha Forum late last year, Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani announced the signing of a multi-year agreement worth $ 500 million to support a number of United Nations organizations. International Organization. is over/6

When the poor mismanage money and resources the poor hold theirs hands out asking more from the rich.  The rich needs to say enough and get your sh@t straight.

Let them go out of business. Should have gone out years ago. They own NOTHING and do noting basically around the world. Make that building a homeless shelter. At least it would be put to some good use. Adios amigos!!

I don't know.....you might hurt someone's feelings......they may start crying...!😟   CL

Great idea to use it as a home....for the homeless....

then the building would really be.... being used for the purposes the UN was intended to do.....!

If they disappeared it would probably be the best for all the nations of the earth! Nothing but a bunch of rent seeking elite that embezzle and do hardly anything for the poor countries they supposedly represent.

Maybe so...So it then would be all left in the hands of IMF and WB ....Aiding poor Countries etc...?

But there should always be imo a worldwide Institution ( to which most world Countries would/should adhere)  covering the way too many  Political issues and conflicts need to be addressed ....Possibly located in a real neutral Country.

Switzerland has a UN branch on its soil.....It should have the total headquarters instead me thinks...

If not Switzerland then another neutral Country...Lichtenstein, Andorra, Seychelles, other......

And I personally think the veto right ( belonging  ONLY to  China, France, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) [which was succeeded in 1990 by the Russian Federation], the United Kingdom and the United States) should be permanently removed....In any decision/ motion it should only be the number of Countries which decides the final result....The right of veto in an absolutely un-democratic rule...Every Country should be deemed equal among equals...JMVHO

Point being that no poor, defenseless Country ( as Far as I know / presume)  would/ could have  any form of political support, let alone having to deal with the arrogance of bigger, more powerful and more rich Countries...Which would not be good...The chances of wars / conflicts /  would amplify ad infinitum......Even for the silliest motives.....

It's  happening already so I couldn't even imagine if / when there's no more UN ( or similar)

I have to politely disagree with you. I don't want a majority of countries, which mine might not be a part of, to vote on something that will affect me in my country.

So would you like to debate the successes and failures of the UN......over 70 years of existence?.....I enjoy history...!

Better yet......let's add dollars spent......"bang for the buck"......so to speak...

The UN has been a "feel good" project for many years now......nothing more......

By the numbers.....$1 billion is $999 million + 1 million.......or a $1000 million.....

That said....

The U.S. government contributed more than $10 billion to the United Nations in 2017, the most recent fiscal year with full data available. About $7 billion of this total was voluntary and $3.5 billion was assessed.Apr 2, 2019.....

70 years.......geez

....

Now this seems to be a real bargain compared to the $4 billion per month the US is spending to be in Afghanistan.....wonder what the real purpose of that is?

Understood....Ok, let's see it another way then....What would happen if any Country might  have the same veto right and not only a handful of select ones ( the ones above all the others...reminds me of  the German Nat'l Anthem of the past.....Deutschland uber alles .- Germany above all....Again very un-fair imho)?

Baghdad / News:
United Nations take, harsh austerity measures, because more than 50 countries, have not paid their contributions to the budget of the Organization this year, the total impact of the Washington budget of the Organization debt, more than one billion dollars.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement published today: "Recently, Washington's debt to the United Nations has reached more than $ 1 billion. It is clear that Washington's attempts to undermine the work of the world body are being used to achieve this. Visas for the organization, as well as financial means of pressure. "
"But Russia remains one of the countries that pay its financial obligations accurately and without delay. Moscow has traditionally called on other UN member states to be self-disciplined and accurate in paying their contributions to the organization's budget," the ministry said.
Earlier, a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry, quoted UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, deteriorating financial situation, to the United Nations. Guterres pointed out that the United Nations Secretariat, in November, will face serious difficulties in the payment of wages of its staff, and the payment of bills from suppliers of goods and services.

Ok....Great...Let's get rid of UN....Then let's sit down, eat our popcorn, enjoy our fave soft ( or hard) drink and watch what's coming next...Nothing good imho

Veto right was the thing that allowed Israel ( which doesn't have one) to ALWAYS get away even with the worst things re: Palestinian People...Each and everytime...

As the US would punctually put a veto on any resolution to that...No matter if most times that resolution got voted by all or most Countries in the Assembly...

160 ( or whatever other  number) Countries  would vote "YES" and Israel and the US ( equipped w veto right) would vote "NO"..... Magnificent and sublime example of DEMOCRACY...JMVHO

Of course there are many other examples involving ALL the other other veto-equipped Countries which show the plain injustice and somehow absurdity of it all....

France too has the veto right ...Britain...Then why not Germany, strongest economy power in Europe??? ...Ah, yes...Cos it lost the war......Ok....

It's  all weird and absurd btw......
