The Syrian Constitutional Commission begins its work under the auspices of the United Nations
Syria's constitutional committee, made up of members of the government and the opposition, met for the first time on Wednesday in the first step in what the United Nations says is a long way to political reconciliation.
But experts are skeptical whether President Bashar al-Assad's government will be willing to make many concessions during the negotiations after it consolidated its military control on the ground.
The 150-member committee held an inaugural ceremony in a hall at the UN headquarters in Geneva, at the invitation of UN special envoy Geir Pedersen and support from world powers. is over

Erdogan: We will remain in the territories of Syria and Iraq to liberate those who threaten us

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that Turkish troops would remain in Syrian and Iraqi territory until he was "liberated" from organizations he considers a threat.

Erdogan told lawmakers from the ruling Justice and Development Party in Ankara: "We will remain in the Syrian and Iraqi territories until we liberate them from the organizations that threaten us."

Erdogan stressed that the Syrian Kurdish YPG did not leave Tel Rifaat, Manbij and East Ras al-Ain in Syria despite the agreements concluded with the United States and Russia in this regard.

He added that "Turkey will abide by its agreements" with Washington and Moxo on Syria "as long as they kept their promises," adding that " America is still carrying out joint patrols with the YPG inside Syria and this was not part of our agreement."

Turkey has signed two separate agreements with the United States and Russia on the withdrawal of the YPG, which Ankara considers a terrorist group, from the "safe area" it plans to establish in northeastern Syria. Washington and Moscow confirmed that Kurdish fighters had left the area.

He said Turkish troops were being attacked by Syrian Kurdish fighters from areas where they had withdrawn. He said Turkey would not stand by for a long time on these attacks.

Erdogan spoke as Turkish and Russian forces conducted second joint patrols in northeastern Syria, under a Moscow-sponsored deal.

In another context, Erdogan said that "there are countries fabricate the arguments" to impose sanctions on Turkey. He continued in the same context: "We paid large sums of money to the United States to buy F-35s, but did not deliver the aircraft."

Erdogan also told reporters in parliament he would make a decision on whether to meet US President Donald Trump in Washington as scheduled this month after speaking to him by telephone.

Independent / US President Donald agreed Trump on an expanded military mission to secure the fields of oil all over eastern Syria , according to officials in the transfer of the US administration Tuesday.

The decision will keep hundreds of US troops in more complex conditions in Syria , despite Trump's pledge to drive his country out of the war, according to The Washington Post.

Under the new plan, the troops would protect a large swathe of territory, controlled by Syrian Kurdish fighters, stretching some 90 miles from Deir Ezzor to Hasakeh.

According to observers, the protection of oil fields in northern and eastern Syria from the remnants of ISIS is the stated goal of the US administration, but beyond that to take advantage of Syrian oil .

Pentagon chief says Washington to keep about 600 troops in Syria despite Trump’s promise to end involvement.

Trump's abrupt announcement last month that he had ordered a full troop withdrawal drew angry rebukes at home and abroad.
Trump's abrupt announcement last month that he had ordered a full troop withdrawal drew angry rebukes at home and abroad.

SEOUL - The United States will maintain around 600 troops in Syria, Pentagon chief Mark Esper said Wednesday, despite Donald Trump's desire to end US involvement in what the president calls "endless wars".

"We're still moving troops out of northeastern Syria," the US defense secretary said onboard a plane as he travelled to Seoul, where he begins a tour of Asia on Thursday.

"We're going to have about 500 to 600-ish troops there, at the end of the day," he said.

Asked if that figure included the approximately 200 troops deployed to the Al-Tanf base near the southeastern borders with Jordan and Iraq, Esper said that he was referring to northeastern Syria, where Trump has instructed the Pentagon to secure oil fields.

There would be "600-ish" troops across the country, he then reiterated.

Esper said that the numbers could fluctuate, particularly if European allies strengthen their presence in the country.

"Things change. Events on the ground change. We could have, for example, partners and allies from Europe joining us," he said. "If they join us on the ground it may allow us the ability to redeploy further US forces out there."

Trump's abrupt announcement last month that he had ordered a full troop withdrawal drew angry rebukes at home and abroad.

Critics said it could allow a resurgence of the Islamic State group while leaving US-allied Kurdish fighters in Syria vulnerable to a Turkish invasion.

The US president later relented in part, saying he would leave some troops in the region to protect valuable oil fields.

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the United States has placed oil in Syria under its control and is now able to act as it wants.

After meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in London at the opening of the NATO summit in the British capital , Trump said, “ ISIS has tried to maintain its control over oil, but now we are in full control of it. Frankly, we have the support of so many different people. In fact, only those who protect our oil remain in these territories. Oil is in our hands and we can do whatever we want. ”

In October, Trump announced the withdrawal of US troops from the area of Operation Spring of Peace, launched by Turkey , on October 9, against Kurdish fighters in northeastern Syria , but stressed Washington's intention to keep oil fields in this part of Syria under its control.
