Why China’s New WZ-8 Hypersonic Surveillance Drone is Very Bad News for the U.S. Navy

 

The WZ-8, much like the American A-12 and SR-71, the Soviet MiG-25R and the current American SR-72 program, is intended to fly at extreme speeds and altitudes over enemy territory to provide both general intelligence and targeting data on enemy positions. While these aircraft proved pivotal in a number of key conflicts, from the Pueblo Incident where A-12 jets surveyed Korean defences to the Yom Kippur War where SR-71 jets found weaknesses in Egyptian lines, emphasis on such systems has notably declined as surveillance satellites have grown both more numerous and more sophisticated. 

 the WZ-8 can provide targeting data to the PLA’s foremost ship hunting assets, guiding a wide variety of missiles from the land based DF-21D ballistic missile to the ship launched YJ-100 cruise missile to strike their targets with precision.

How long did Skunk Works have the A12 or SR71 before they announced it?

I am sure we have/had something ready to replace our high speed recon inventory before "WE" know/knew about it.
