Economy News - Baghdad

The Iraqi delegation's visit to China resulted in the signing of eight agreements and memorandums of understanding between the Iraqi and Chinese governments in Beijing on Monday.

The most prominent of these agreements was the "Arithmetic Credit" agreement, which guarantees oil for reconstruction, and was signed on the sidelines of the World Industrialization Conference in the city of "Hefei" Chinese.

Under the agreement, 100,000 barrels per day will be deducted to China, in return for Chinese companies implementing strategic projects such as roads, railways, hospitals, schools, housing complexes, ports, energy, dams, infrastructure and others.

Iraq is counting through the "oil for reconstruction" agreement to rebuild its cities in a record period, and accelerate the wheel of development, reconstruction and construction.

China attaches great importance to its relations with Iraq, considering it a "strategic and essential partner in the Middle East."

The Chinese government has demanded from its Iraqi counterpart special protection and documented guarantees to secure China's expected investment in Iraq.

A Bahraini newspaper revealed on Thursday, September 26, 2019, citing a source accompanying Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi and his government officials during his last week-long visit to China, saying that Chinese officials have required Abdul Mahdi to provide full protection to Chinese companies that have signed large contracts. To implement projects in various sectors in Iraq.

Chinese officials have told Abdul Mahdi that there are expected financial blackmail from Iraqi political forces that demand a percentage of profits from foreign companies operating in Iraq, often up to half of the profits, exploiting the armed factions that are under their responsibility to threaten these companies.

The Chinese have openly complained to the Iraqi prime minister by asserting that such blackmail is practiced outside the control of the government and without any deterrence to stop such practices.

For example, a Chinese company signed a contract to produce nutrients to supply Iraqi hospitals for 40 cents per bottle, but those described by the window in Iraq prevented the company from working to keep Iraq going. Importing feeder from a neighboring country for a dollar per bottle at a large price difference goes as commissions to armed factions and political forces in force in Iraq.

Abdul Mahdi, for his part, according to the source pledged to work to overcome all obstacles to Chinese investment and companies operating in Iraq.

China and the next stage

Prime Minister Dr. Adel Abdul-Mahdi's visit to China carried a wide ambition to activate cooperation with the second largest economy in the world, although the cooperation is in the field of trade with an estimated trade volume of 37 billion dollars led by the private sector.
Here, with great desire to cooperate with a large economy with capital and advanced technology, what should we prepare for the next stage? We are all convinced that challenges persist and hinder the evolving global effort in the local labor market.
It is urgent to create an ideal working environment that attracts the international evolving efforts of China and others. To realize that the development of the economy is beneficial for all and integrates with neighboring and regional economies.
It is imperative to know where to start and what to prepare for the next stage of development of our local economy, and to be a great supporter of the global economy.
Our mission is not impossible, a strong will is required to move the economy to safety, and with the recent government directions in cooperation with major world economies, we can do the local market and transfer to the global that is in dire need of a virgin economy such as the Iraqi economy, which has the channels of great benefit for all.
We are all aware of China's manufacturing capabilities that can make Iraq the starting point for Chinese industries towards global markets, benefiting from geographical location, and this can be achieved through bilateral partnerships reached through channels of serious cooperation that benefit both sides.
 the operation.
Iraq has the developmental constituents of natural and human resources and the influence of the global economy. This is recognized by the evolving international effort. We must employ it properly while enjoying the national will to serve our country.

Towards the Silk Road

Wednesday 25 September 2019 56

Towards the Silk Road

Dr.. In the name of Brahimi

The visit is the largest in terms of the number and level of officials that took place a few days ago through a high-level delegation headed by the Prime Minister to the People's Republic of China, the second economic power or as the so-called Asian Dragon which is expected to become within the next two decades

The first economic figure in the world, a visit with important implications and deep dimensions at the level of the relationship between the two countries as well as the possible repercussions on economic relations in particular, what are the most prominent ones
Reflections? Is it permissible for us to be optimistic or will it be a visit like other visits by officials in the past years?
Certainly, China's economic weight internationally is important in choosing the destination of the visit.
It is also a trading partner for many countries of the world, including Iraq and has a significant proportion of world trade
Reaching about 25 percent, with a value of about $ 4.5 trillion, it also has the best real estate companies in the world.
Boat (10 percent) annually on average.
The importance of this visit comes not only from the economic advantages we mentioned, but also from the mechanism that will be adopted as part of the strategy signed during the visit. The main advantage of this agreement is that the funding of these projects will be through the proposed fund without going through ministries, committees and To be away from the corruption that has disrupted the start of the Iraqi economy for more than a decade and a half.
If Iraq is able to proceed with this agreement, it will be on the threshold of an important stage of its transition from one case to another, befitting it, its economic and historical status and its national merits, with its material and human resources capable of making the future.

The MP of the opposition wisdom bloc Ali al-Budairi, on Thursday, the existence of corruption and waste of public funds during the agreements signed between the Iraqi side and the Chinese.
Al-Budeiri said that 'the signing of direct agreements by the governors may lead to waste of public money,' adding that 'there are real fears of suspicions of corruption or waste of money in the agreements signed by Iraqi officials during their visit to China, especially since the parliament did not know what agreements and deals Signed by Baghdad with Beijing so far '.
He called on Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi to give the House of Representatives a full briefing on his visit to China. He said, 'We will scrutinize those agreements and examine them, especially since the House of Representatives has the right to reject them in case of suspicions of corruption or waste of public money.'
