Mansour al-Baiji, deputy of the State of Law coalition led by Nuri al-Maliki announced on Thursday that the House of Representatives will work with the beginning of its next legislative chapter to provide all legal procedures supporting the government and the Ministry of Defense to facilitate the purchase of Russian air defense missile system and overcome obstacles that America is working on this deal.

"The United States is not the guardian of Iraq and the Iraqi government has the freedom to choose the country from which it wants to buy weapons or equip it with any defense system for Iraq," he said in a statement.

He added, "We will work during the next legislative term to put forward the law of the expulsion of foreign forces in addition to providing the atmosphere and all appropriate measures to arm the country and protect it from any external aggression."

Calls for arming Iraq with an air-to-missile system were launched after Popular Mobilization positions were hit by drones attributed to Israel.
