I also (used to) speak Spanish fairly well as my 2nd ex wife was  / is Cuban

 

I love the language but now I can't prectice it anymore.....

 

Now ( in the last years)  I got myself into Portuguese which is also very beautiful, but I am forgetting Spanish

It's so wonderful to learn foreign languages and then try and succeed in communicating with People not only in our mother tongue but in theirs infact.....Good feeling...and makes us feel like we're not that lazy and / or thinking anybody should speak our language ( a li'l bit arrogant imo) esp in their  own Countries!

 

We should try and at least attempt to speak the basic of the language spoken in the Country / Countries we wanna visit.....

 

Locals will certainly appreciate that by seeing we do not take for granted we are / feel Superior to them and that they MUST speak our language even though we are the ones visiting their Country.....

 

That has always been wrong and was the rule in the Colonial period ( which ended finally)

 

A little dictionary with the basic stuff will do perfectly usually...No big deal

For sure, try to communicate with the locals in their own language is a big deal to them. It shows that you are making an effort.

Exactly! It also shows them that we ( some / most of us, I'd hope) do not consider them our slaves! Even though I'm sure some still do unfortunately.......Karma will re-pay those too one day......

I went to Bangkok once....A rather strange place...Seriously...I also went to Phuket island....Too much confusion ..

 

I'd never go back to Thailand....Didn't like it at all....JMVHO...Besides...It's full of Italians...Used to meet lots of them every day

 

But they happen to be everywhere....Even ( you won't believe this!) on the DV Forum
