New York Times: Israel bombed a weapons depot in Iraq

Israel has launched at least one strike on a weapons depot in Iraq, The New York Times reported on Thursday .

Israel bombed a base north of Baghdad in July, while two US officials said Israel had carried out several strikes in Iraq in recent days, a senior Middle East intelligence official was quoted as saying .

Four bases used by the Popular Mobilization have been hit by mysterious explosions in July .

Israel has repeatedly bombed Iranian targets in Syria. But extending this campaign to Iraq - where Israel destroyed the July nuclear reactor in 1981 - could damage relations between Washington and Baghdad .

The deputy head of the Popular Mobilization Council, Abu Mahdi al-Mohandes, accused US forces on Wednesday of being "the first and last responsible" for the attacks that were carried out "by agents or by specific operations with modern aircraft."

He accused the Americans of "bringing four Israeli drones" into Iraq to "carry out sorties targeting Iraqi military headquarters," threatening that the PMU would treat any foreign aircraft flying over its positions without the Iraqi government's knowledge as "enemy aircraft."

The head of the PMU, Faleh al-Fayyad, the national security adviser, on Thursday, August 22, 2019, mitigated the accusations .

The Pentagon denied the charges. A spokesman for the ministry: "We are not involved in the recent bombings," stressing that the US presence in Iraq is to support the country's efforts against terrorists .

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hinted that Israel may be involved in attacks against Iranian-linked targets in Iraq.
In recent weeks, there have been a series of explosions at weapons depots and bases belonging to armed groups in Iraq, many of which are backed by Iran.
In an interview with Israel's Channel 9 television broadcast on Thursday, Netanyahu was asked whether Israel would strike Iranian targets in Iraq if necessary. Security and directed me to do anything necessary to thwart Iran's plans. "
Netanyahu did not name Iraq as one of these areas.
Israel says it has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria, some of which hit Iranian targets, to prevent Tehran from establishing a military presence there and to prevent advanced weapons from reaching its proxies in the region.
Israeli officials have recently indicated that they consider Iraq to be more of a threat than in the past few years, but have not commented directly on the recent bombings at the PMF.
The Popular Mobilization Body, which is affiliated with pro-Iranian groups, has blamed the United States and Israel for the blasts at its weapons depots and bases.
The United States has allowed four Israeli drones to enter the area with US forces and carry out missions on Iraqi soil, the agency said in a statement.
The Pentagon has denied involvement in the strikes. The US-led coalition fighting IS in Iraq rejected the statement.
Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi last week ordered the transfer of all ammunition depots belonging to the armed forces or armed factions outside the cities.

He also revoked all permits for private flights of Iraqi or foreign aircraft, which means the prime minister must pre-authorize flights, including those carried out by the US-led coalition to fight ISIS.

Israel recently launched a series of air strikes against military targets linked to Iran in Iraq, two US officials said.

The New York Times quoted the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, that Israel had carried out "several strikes in recent days on ammunition depots for Iranian-backed groups in Iraq."

Last month saw a series of explosions in Iraq at training camps and weapons depots used by the paramilitary Popular Mobilization Forces.

An Iraqi government report, obtained by the Associated Press, obtained on Wednesday  that a huge explosion occurred in anammunition depot run by the crowd forces near Baghdad last week was caused by an air strike by a drone.

The report summarized the findings of a fact-finding commission set up by the government to investigate the August 12 explosion at the al-Saqr military base.

The report said the explosion was caused by an airstrike by a drone aircraft and caused a huge fire.

A senior Middle Eastern intelligence official said Israel was also responsible for the July 19 raid on a military base north of Baghdad used by Iran's Revolutionary Guards to transport weapons to Syria, according to the US newspaper.

The official said the Israeli raid was launched from inside Iraq, but gave no further details, adding that it destroyed a guided missile cache with a range of 200 km.

The report follows comments by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahuthat Israel was responsible for a series of attacks against Iranian-backed militias in Iraq over the past month.

Netanyahu told Channel 9, directed at Russian-speaking Israelis, "I do not grant immunity to Iran anywhere. Iran is a state, a force, sworn to destroy Israel. It is trying to build bases against us everywhere. In Iran itself, in Lebanon, in Syria, in Iraq, in Yemen. "

"In other words, if necessary, will we work in Iraq as well?" Netanyahu replied: "We are not only acting if necessary, we are working in many theaters against a country that seeks to exterminate us. Clearly, I have given the security forces orders and operational freedom to do everything necessary to disrupt these plots by Iran."

Alhakim stressed that Iraq is committed to maintaining good relations with its neighbors

Added that Iraq was not an “arena for conflict and disagreement”

BAGHDAD: Iraq's Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Alhakim summoned the US charge d’affaires Brian McFeeters on Friday evening.
The two discussed the latest developments in Iraq and across the wider region, as well as cooperation on intelligence and military matters and the fight against terrorism.
According to a statement from the foreign ministry, Alhakim stressed that Iraq is committed to maintaining good relations with its neighbors and preserving security within its borders.
The charge d’affaires at the US embassy in Baghdad had been summoned hours after US officials disclosed to the New York Times intelligence that Israel had attacked a military base belonging to an Iraqi armed faction in July and bombed three makeshift warehouses inside the base in northern Baghdad.
Alhakim urged the US to commit to “implementing the terms of the strategic partnership agreement with Iraq in the security and economic spheres and to enhance joint cooperation between the two countries in various sectors,” the statement read.
He added that Iraq was not an “arena for conflict and disagreement,” but rather for “building and growth.”
Alhakim made it clear that Iraq places the “utmost importance on diplomatic and legal options to prevent any external interference in its internal affairs and to safeguard the security and sovereignty of the country,” according to the statement.

Leaders of armed factions in the country accuse Israel and the US of carrying out attacks using armed drones, but the Iraqi government denies that there is currently any evidence of the involvement of external parties.
US officials earlier this week uncovered intelligence indicating that Israel was involved in at least one of the attacks, which Iraqi officials told Arab News had embarrassed the Iraqi government and increased local and regional pressure on officials to take a clear position on the American forces and their control of Iraqi airspace.

What is happening between Israel and Iraq is a "secret war"

 2019/08/24 08:19:21

A report to the British newspaper "The Times" on Saturday described the war between Israel and Iraq as a "secret war", referring to the disclosure by US officials, recently, of an operation carried out by Israeli planes, which attacked an Iranian weapons depot in Iraq.

The newspaper considered it an escalation of the Israeli secret strikes to counter Tehran's growing influence in the region.

At the same time, the newspaper considered that such a raid threatens to destabilize Iraq during a period of relative peace, pointing out that the air strike is the first Israeli attack in Iraq since the aircraft destroyed a nuclear reactor built by Saddam Hussein in 1981.

According to the report, officials in Washington said that two Iranian leaders were killed in the attack, meanwhile, officials in the region said that a huge explosion rocked al-Qaeda in Amerli, in the northern province of Salah al-Din, and huge fire broke out.

The report revealed photos of the scene, which showed the fire at the site, used by the Badr Corps, an old militia originally formed by Iraqi Shiite fighters who stood by Iran during the Iran-Iraq war.

The Israeli army refused to comment on the attacks, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made the remarks when asked about a visit to Ukraine.

She drew "The Times" to call "the three presidencies in Iraq, to investigate all the data and information on the bombings of weapons stores belonging to the Popular Mobilization."

But yet Iraq allows Iran to build up weapons caches in their country but dont want to be involved.

They should be threatened with some new sanctions to remind them of conceqences being friends of Iran and pushing the US out.
