Moscow reveals countries to which terrorists move from Syria and Iraq

The Financial Times published a report by Chloe Corniche, from the town of Makhmour in Kurdistan, and captivating Khattab from Beirut, titled "The threat of ISIS militants remains in Syria and Iraq."

ISIS , which has controlled large swathes of Syria and Iraq since 2015, has overwhelmed its previous power and its ability to stir terror," the report says.

But the US military warned in a report published last week that ISIS remained a strong threat.

The newspaper quoted the US military as saying that " ISIS is gathering its armed capabilities in Iraq and reappear in Syria ," while local security forces find it difficult to retain their gains after the partial withdrawal of US forces.

The Pentagon said that from April to June, ISIS carried out "assassinations, suicide bombings and deliberate operations to burn agricultural crops."

In April, ISIL leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi released his first video in five years, calling on followers to continue fighting.

The report adds that "between 14 and 18 thousand fighters of the organization is still in Syria and Iraq ."

"The Pentagon report comes amid concerns that geopolitical shifts in the Middle East could undermine the victories so far against the group," the paper says .

Since President Donald Trump announced the defeat of ISIS last December, the United States has reduced its military presence in northern Syria , arguing that the need for its troops has dropped dramatically.

The Pentagon report sees a different view, which concludes that reducing the number of US troops is limiting the coalition's ability to regulate the state to regain the huge Sphinx refugee camp, allowing the organization to spread its ideology among 70,000 refugees.

U.S. F-35A Joint Strike Fighters and F-15 Strike Eagles dropped nearly 80,000 pounds in weapons Tuesday on Islamic State targets on Qanus Island in central Iraq as part of a larger coalition operation against the extremist group, according to a news release.

The U.S.-led international coalition said it targeted ISIS militants on the island, located in the Salah ad Din Province along the Tigris river, to "deny safe haven" for the group, officials said in the release.

Army Col. Myles Caggins, spokesman for Operation Inherent Resolve, posted a video of the bomb drop on his official Twitter account.

"Here's what it looks like when @USAFCENT #F15 and #F35 jets drop 36,000 Kg of bombs on a Daesh infested island," he wrote, using a term for ISIS preferred by the military.

Photos corresponding with the announcement show pilots readying for the mission; the video shows dozens of locations struck with bombs.

"We're setting the conditions for our partner forces to continue bringing stability to the region," said Air Force Maj. Gen. Eric Hill, commander of Special Operations Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve.

The goal was to "disrupt [ISIS'] ability to hide in the thick vegetation," the release states.

Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service forces "continue to conduct ground clearance operations to destroy any remaining [ISIS fighters] on the island," officials said.

While the Strike Eagle has been conducting operations against the Islamic State since the air campaign began in 2014, the Air Force's version of the Lightning II stealth fighter made its combat debut in Iraq in April.

Two F-35s -- the most advanced fighters in the U.S. military's inventory -- were used to conduct an "airstrike using a Joint Direct Attack Munition to strike an entrenched tunnel network and a weapons cache" belonging to the Islamic State deep in the Hamrin Mountains in the northeast part of the country, officials said of the April mission.

The latest strike signals that the air war against ISIS isn't over despite lower strike numbers in Iraq and Syria in recent months.

U.S. military aircraft dropped 218 total munitions on ISIS targets last month, according to recent statistics published by Air Forces Central Command. By comparison, in 2017, aircraft dropped 5,075 in the month of August, more than 20 times last month's total and the highest number of munitions recorded in a single month's time, the data shows.

That year, a record number of bombs -- 39,577 -- was used against the group.

Hey, ISIS....a little 9/11 gift from America.

Question is: armed forces know there are 80k ISIS on an island, in the middle of Iraq....what are the Iraqi forces doing??  They let the coalition forces come in and do the dirty work. The same coalition forces that those in the GOI want removed from the country. This tells me the Iraq armed forces are no where near ready to police their own country. Or have the will to do it. Pathetic.

The Pentagon fears the rise of ISIS in Iraqi Kurdistan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon warned on Wednesday that the Islamic State terror group could exploit persistent tensions between the central government in Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government in disputed areas to seek safe haven while sleeper cells are being tracked there.

" ISIS is taking advantage of the security gaps in the disputed Iraqi territory and along the line between Iraqi and Kurdish security forces," US Deputy Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Michael Mulroy said in a report translated by Al-Monitor.

"Ensuring that ISIL is not able to regain its strength or the territory it previously occupied in these areas is in the interest of both Iraqi and Kurdish security forces," he said.

According to the report, “the concerns come amid increasing ISIS activity in Iraq around the Kurdish areas, where ISIS has launched a handful of mortar attacks and a number of terrorist elements in the disputed areas in recent weeks, mostly concentrated in agriculture-rich Diyala province, where cells have grown Sleeping group in the pockets of the valley along the Hamrin mountain range. ”

“In a report last month, the Pentagon's inspector general said that ISIS is able to use the disputed Kurdish territory to“ find a safe haven to regroup and plan attacks ”, as the Iraqi government has shown limited interest in establishing joint security arrangements with Kurds and Peshmerga. .

“Although the Pentagon is trying to integrate more funds away from the Middle East and into military competition with China and Russia, the Trump administration has pushed hard for a solution between Baghdad and Erbil in recent weeks over constitutional and budget disputes and revenue sharing with the government, he said. The semi-autonomous Kurdistan region. ” Finished / 25 z

It depends on which direction the jets were flying when the munitions were released. If it had been 1 B-52 releasing the bombs as it flew over then the pattern you described would have been what you expected to see. In the Fighter business, you don not fly straight and level in formation to bomb, because you are exposing yourself to enemy fire. And you never know what defenses your enemy might have. So fighters have various bombing maneuvers where they drop from different direction and altitudes, to keep the enemy off guard and guessing. The highest point frag pattern of a Mark 82, 500 pound bomb explosion is 2525ft above the blast. The first jet can  get down low to release his package, but the next fighter has to have a bombing run that will keep him above the frag pattern of the first bomber. The larger the bomb the highest the center overhead frag pattern would be. Don't know what bombs they used, but that is one explanation of why the pattern looked the way it did. And there are others as well. Just my:twocents::salute:

Pictures .. Satellites reveal what happened to the "Island of Dawis" in Iraq
Satellite images showed the Iraqi island of Da'ash, which was hit by US warplanes missiles on Tuesday, to record teams before and after the raids, and the effects they had on the island, described as a "transit" stop for Daesh. Traveling to Iraq.
The US-led coalition to fight terrorism and fight ISIS announced on Tuesday that US warplanes dropped 36 tons of bombs on the island of Kaanous in the Tigris River, which is teeming with extremist members of ISIS.
The coalition said the raids were carried out by F-15 and F-35 planes, and targeted the island located in the central province of Salah al-Din, north of the capital Baghdad.
Reports said the raids killed about a dozen ISIS hiding in the island, while a spokesman for Iraqi forces to combat terrorism, said the raids killed 25 people.
The attack is part of operations by Iraqi forces and the US-led coalition against the group that was defeated in Iraq in 2017, and since then its cells have carried out deadly bombings in Iraq.
"before and after"
The Fox News website, citing "Planet Labs, Inc" and researcher Wim Zwijnenberg, published two pictures showing the island before and after the raids. The effects of the bombings are clear.
Zwijnenberg, a researcher at Pax, a Dutch nonprofit organization dealing with conflicts and the environment, said the images showed that the island had no structure, meaning that underground facilities were unlikely.
The images came after an official video of the raids was published, showing massive explosions of mushroom-shaped clouds rising from Kanaws, which appeared to have been bombed.
"We are denying ISIS the possibility of hiding on the island of Kanawas," said Maj. Gen. Eric Hill, Special Forces Commander of the Joint Task Force. "We provide conditions for allied forces to continue to bring stability to the region."
Commenting on the video documenting the raids, Hill said in a tweet on Twitter: "So it looks like when F15 and F35 fighters drop more than 36 thousand kilograms of ammunition on an island infested with ISIS."
Transit Island
A spokesman for Iraqi counter-terrorism forces told Fox News that the island was a "hotel" for ISIS travelers from Syria to Iraq.
US officials described the island as a "transit" stop for ISIS militants entering and leaving Syria.
