Jared Kushner owns Baltimore apartments ‘infested’ with rodents, mould and maggots

Donald Trump characterised Elijah Cummings’ Baltimore-based congressional district as a “rodent infested mess” where “no human” would want to live, in a now-viral tweetstorm on Saturday.

His criticism rang with a particular irony in Baltimore County, where the president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner owns more than a dozen apartment complexes that have been cited with hundreds of code violations and, critics say, provide sub-standard housing to lower income tenants.

In an interview on Saturday, Baltimore County Executive John Olszewski Jr condemned Mr Trump’s comments as “an attack on basic decency”.

“It is certainly ironic that the president’s own son-in-law was complicit in contributing to some of the neglect that the president purports to be so concerned about,” Mr Olszewski, a Democrat, added.

Kushner Companies, which started operating in Maryland in 2013, has owned almost 9,000 rental units across 17 complexes, many of them in Baltimore County, the Baltimore Sun reported earlier this year.

The properties generate at least $90m (£72m) in revenue annually. Mr Kushner stepped down as CEO of the company in 2017, when he became a senior White House advisor.

A company spokesperson did not address questions on Sunday about whether the group agreed with Mr Trump’s characterisation of the area, but wrote: “Kushner Companies is proud to own thousands of apartments in the Baltimore area.”

In 2017, Baltimore County officials revealed that apartments owned by Kushner Cos were responsible for more than 200 code violations, all accrued in the span of the calendar year.

Repairs were made only after the county threatened fines, local officials said, and even after warnings, violations on nine properties were not addressed, resulting in monetary sanctions.

In an investigation by the New York Times and Pro Publica published earlier that year, tenants of Kushner Cos properties reported mouse infestations, mould problems and maggots.

A private investigator who looked into Mr Kusher’s property management company, Westminster Management, described them as “slumlords”.

Christine Taylor, a spokeswoman for the Kushner Cos, asserted at the time that the group was in compliance with all state and local laws.

Then-Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz said that was “a stretch of truth”.

“We expect all landlords to comply with the code requirements that protect the health and safety of their tenants, even if the landlord’s father-in-law is president of the United States,” added Mr Kamenetz, who died in 2018.

Shannon Darrow, a programme manager at the tenant advocacy group Fair Housing Action Centre of Maryland, said on Sunday that she was “appalled” by Mr Trump’s comments about Mr Cummings’s district, which includes about half of Baltimore City, and most of the majority black sections of Baltimore County.

She added that she found Mr Trump’s attacks ironic given the legacy of Mr Kushner’s properties in the district.

“Basically, [Mr Kushner] has been creating a race to the bottom in terms of poorly maintained properties,” she said. “He’s been very, very deeply implicated.”

In the past two years, Kushner Cos and its affiliated entities have been sued multiple times by Baltimore-area residents who allege that the company has charged them excessive fees and used the threat of eviction to pressure them into paying up.

From 2013 to 2017, corporate entities associated with Kushner Cos’ apartments requested the civil arrest of 105 former tenants – the highest number among all property managers in Maryland during that period, the Baltimore Sun reported.

“It’s been our recent experience that working families have been preyed on at the benefit of Mr Kushner and his company,” Mr Olszewski said.

A group of tenants recently attempted to file a class-action lawsuit alleging unlawful rental practices by the company. But their request was denied by a Baltimore Circuit Court judge

Having spent thirty some years in an industry that grew busy during horrid weather conditions in all seasons, there seems to be an analogy to the Baltimore situation. Indeed, during hurricanes and their aftermath, or ice storms or floods, once you enter that zone the mundane realities of everyday life are stripped down to their basic forms. There’s no beginning and no end, there just is.
Last year while traveling in and about Baltimore while working there was a woman on Monroe Street who despite the abject squalor of her surroundings, swept the street in front of her home. Her house was freshly painted, the sidewalk was clean and all the trash was picked up and her porch looked inviting to sit on as hanging baskets of flowers dangled. The inner harbor, that eyesore of a shopping district was once a thriving port of commerce. They have a new shiny incinerator in south Baltimore but the Hanover Street Bridge has all but collapsed. It still stands mind you, but I no longer drive over this bridge as I have no wish to be on the news at 5 for that particular story.
If you drive down 95 you can see encampments by the Patapsco River. You can see encampments along 295, the lower end of 695 by Essex and other places. Never did I see this as a kid when I lived there. It’s like there is no beginning and no end. It just is and that’s the reality.

I remember Hanover St Bridge from when I headed north in the city.

I lived downtown in a renovated loft building about 3 blocks from what is now the inner harbor.

The projects and public housing were 6 blocks away on the other side of MLK blvd.

I could hear gun shots most nights, and this was 1990-92.

I lived for a period of time on Paca Street in an upstairs “loft”. I kept my bed between the windows so as to not get hit from stray bullets from the gun battles that took place across the street in the park that was adjacent to St. Jude’s Church.
Don’t mean to clutter the board with these posts, but there a part of me that loves the place having grown up there and the attachment that my family has having helped to settle the area dating back to the 1700’s. But that’s a story for another time. Thanks and appreciate the comment.

I was chosen as a juror, no doubt, because they thought I was a liberal white suburban female who would be soft. This has been my view about all politicians for years.  I’m glad you feel the same as the truth is the only thing that matters. The problem with politicians is they are all attorneys so they know how to cloud the truth so it’s really not against the law, in their mind.   They are word fighters and semantics is an art form with them.  Bill Clinton had the most classic argument for his actions in the White House, 

“ I did not have sexual relations with that woman”.  “Define sex”.

Trump had the biggest victory of the week (Supreme Court backed him on $2.5 Billion to be spent on the WALL, and Mueller Debacle) and the Democrats are running after tweets. They are like little kittens when you shine a flashlight on the floor and they chase after the light thinking they can catch it...but it will never happen. They continue to miss the reason this President is backed by so many Americans and continue to think if they can find the one thing that can turn the general public against this President, then they will be able to either remove him from office or elect a Democrat in 2020.

 

Let me save you the heartache and pain you will experience election night...can you say President-Elect Trump?

Where people choose to live is a reflection of their lifestyle choice.  I’ve lived in what some would call a slum.  It was a pathetic place for sure.  At the time I was making some terrible choices in life.  I was more interested in getting drunk than having a job.  Eventually I hit rock bottom and got sober, and because of my “white privilege” I worked 2 and 3 jobs at a time to finish my education, save some money and start my own business.  While I was working those jobs and going to school I still lived in the hideous apartment because it was really all I could afford.  To be honest I was grateful to have a roof over my head.  

 

The point Im trying to make is no one is forcing people to live in shantyville.  There are enough programs, churches, people who care, for anyone to better themselves.  I would like to see more done in the mental health situation because many of the homeless and those who live in slums are truly in need to a mental facility,  Those are the ones who truly cannot take care of themselves And need help with decent living quarters. Our country has done an abominable job in mental health area.
