BAGHDAD (Reuters) -
Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi is on a visit to the Iranian capital on Monday, government sources said.
The sources told Mawazine News that "Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi is visiting today, the Iranian capital."
She explained that "Abdul Mahdi will discuss with Iranian officials tension between Iran and the United States and Britain."
He said Iraq was seeking a calm in the crisis between the United States and Iran. He also talked about sending two Iraqi delegations to Washington and Tehran to help contain the tension.
Abdul Mahdi announced at the end of last May that he will visit Washington and Tehran soon to discuss the situation of the region against the background of the crisis between the United States and Iran.
Tensions between Tehran and Washington and London have escalated in recent weeks after Tehran dropped a US airliner over the waters of the Gulf amid US accusations that Tehran was endangering security in the region. Tehran and London exchanged oil tankers.

Whatever it was apparently was to top secret he couldn’t tell him on a phone. Or maybe all he did was just bring him a bunch of US dollars.

Took longer to get his airplane ready than his actual visit, I’m sure Trump is wondering what the short trip was all about too...

Abdul-Mahdi discusses with Abu Mazen "US sanctions and prevent their repercussions"
(Baghdad: Al-Furat News) Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi discussed with the head of the National Axis parliamentary bloc Ahmed Abdullah al-Jubouri the US Treasury's decision to impose sanctions on Iraqi personalities, including Jubouri.
"The two sides discussed" the latest political developments and the prevention of the repercussions of the US Treasury decision to undermine the sovereignty of the Iraqi official decision and protect the constitutionality of the governing institution, both legislative and executive, "the statement said.
On January 18, the United States imposed sanctions on four Iraqis, including two leaders of two popular factions.
The US Treasury Department said it had imposed sanctions on Ryan Chaldean, the commander of the Babylonian battalions, the 50th Brigade, and the commander of the Nineveh plain, known as the 30th Brigade.
The US sanctions include two former government officials, Nawfal al-Aakoub, former governor of Nineveh province, and Ahmed al-Jubouri, former governor of Salahaddin, whom the ministry accuses of corruption and human rights abuses.
Under the new sanctions, Washington will impose a ban on the property of the four Iraqis in the United States, and will prevent its citizens from conducting any business dealings with them.

What a loser...these guys only care about themselves. I met an Iranian Woman working at Walmart and I asked her what it is like there and she didn't have anything positive to say about their Government. Mahdi is a sore loser and is an extension of Maliki. I agree with you Senior Member. Why is it so hard to do what is in the best interest of your own People and Economy FIRST instead of letting Iran dictate your affairs. I need to stay away until this clown is out of office. I see why Sadaam overthrew the Shitte leaders.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – In a meeting in Tehran, the top officials of the two neighboring states of Iraq and Iran discussed, among other topics, easing Gulf tensions, which have spiked between Baghdad’s regional ally and the West in recent months.

Iraq’s Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi arrived in the Iranian capital in the afternoon, spearheading a delegation that included his ministers of finance, defense, oil, and transportation, as well as his national security advisor, and other officials and advisors, according to a statement from his office.

“Relations between the two neighboring nations, the developments in the region, and ways to defuse the current crises,” led discussions during the meeting between Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani and Abdul Mahdi, the PM’s office said.

Before his departure, Abdul Mahdi talked on the phone with British Defense Minister Penny Mordaunt on the latest regional developments, including “freedom of navigation,” a readout from Baghdad summarizing the conversation said.

The two sides stressed “the necessity of achieving security and stability in the Gulf region and the Middle East, and the importance of freedom of navigation for all countries and respect for international law and agreed to cooperate to achieve this.”

Earlier this year, the Iraqi prime minister expressed his country’s willingness to act as a mediator in the building Gulf tensions.

The UK and Iran have entered a standoff after the former captured an Iranian oil tanker off the coast of Gibraltar, saying it was headed for Syria in contravention of EU sanctions. Tehran disputes this and, in an apparent act of retaliation, seized a British-flagged ship in the Strait of Hormuz.

Britain called Iran’s action – an operation carried out by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) navy – a “hostile act” and rejected Tehran’s claims their carrier had been detained because it was involved in a collision.

This comes in tandem with an increasingly difficult situation between the US and Iran, marred by many incidents since Washington withdrew last year from a nuclear deal between the Gulf country and world powers and re-imposed successive rounds of punitive sanctions that have crippled its economy.

Last month, Tehran shot down a US surveillance drone in the Gulf of Oman, claiming the plane had breached its airspace and did not respond to multiple warnings. Washington disputes this and insists the aircraft was flying over international waters at the time.

Earlier on Monday, Iran’s Intelligence Ministry said in an announcement they had captured 17 alleged spies over the past year, claiming they were trained by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and operating in their country. The US said the statements were false.
