Lindsey Graham on criticism of Trump: 'I don't remember John McCain having to go through this crap'

c446792d453f3ad948d2c78a1e97a64a Graham made the remark when asked about the contrast between how President Donald Trump and former Sen. John McCain treat their political opponents.

WASHINGTON – When asked about the difference between former Sen. John McCain and President Donald Trump criticism of their political opponents, Sen. Lindsey Graham angrily told reporters, "I don't remember John McCain having to go through this crap every day."

Graham made the remark when CNN's Manu Raju asked him how much the Republican Party had changed in light of the "send her back" chant that Trump supporters leveled at Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., at a North Carolina rally on Wednesday. Raju contrasted that with how McCain famously defended his Democratic opponent in the 2008 presidential race, then-Sen. Barack Obama, from a woman at a rally who said she did not trust Obama because he was "an Arab."

"No ma'am," McCain said at that Oct. 2008 rally before taking the microphone from the audience member. "He's a decent, family man, citizen, that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues."

Earlier at that rally in Lakeville, Minnesota, another man told McCain, "We're scared of an Obama presidency."

"I want to be president of the United States and obviously I do not want Sen. Obama to be," McCain responded. "But I have to tell you, he is a decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared as president of the United States."

That response drew boos from some members of the audience.

"I was proud of John," Graham said Thursday. "My differences with President Obama were real but I never doubt that he loved the country."

The South Carolina Republican was a close friend of McCain, who died in August 2018.

"President Trump would never do that," Raju said.

"He took a different tack. He's fighting back," Graham said. But he said he didn't remember "anybody treating John McCain the way they're treating Trump. I don't remember John McCain having to go through this crap every day, all the time."

"Something I have learned: If you are a Republican nominee for President – or President – you will be accused of being a racist.," Graham tweeted later on Thursday. "John Lewis compared John McCain’s campaign to being like that of George Wallace. It comes with the territory unfortunately."

The day after McCain's 2008 rally in Minnesota, Rep. John Lewis. D-Ga., said he was "deeply disturbed by the negative tone of the McCain-Palin campaign" and accused them "sowing the seeds of hate and division," comparing it to the "atmosphere of hate" created by segregationist Gov. George Wallace. Later the same night. Lewis issued a clarification, which said it was not his intention to "compare Sen. John McCain or Gov. Sarah Palin to George Wallace." "I am glad that Sen. McCain has taken some steps to correct divisive speech at his rallies," Lewis said, apparently in light of McCain's comments the day before.

Trump has faced heavy criticism this week following tweets that told four progressive congresswomen of color to "go back" to their countries of origin and fix the problems there before "telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run."

At his rally Wednesday, Trump said Omar, along with Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, "hate our country" and, "If they don't like it, let them leave." All four women are U.S. citizens. When Trump went after Omar – who was born in Somalia – the crowd began to chant, "send her back. Though Trump did not object to the chanting at the time, on Thursday he told reporters, "I wasn't happy with that message." "Let me be clear, my beef is with policy, not personality," Graham said Thursday when asked about the chants. "All of these congressmen won their elections. They're American citizens. This is their home as much as mine. "I believe their policies will change America for the worse, and that's the debate for me."

Graham also told reporters he did not believe Trump was being racist with his comments, which he compared to the 1960s refrain of "love it or leave it" that was often leveled against protesters opposed to the Vietnam War."A Somali refugee embracing Trump would not have been asked to go back," Graham said. "If you're a racist you want everybody from Somalia to go back because they're black or they're Muslim." Somalia was one of the nations in each version of Trump's controversial travel ban. Before his death, McCain was one Trump's fiercest Republicans critics. In 2016 he told The New Yorker that Trump had "fired up the crazies." "We have a very extreme element within our Republican Party," McCain said. "Now he galvanized them" and "really got them activated."

Whatever... He serves his country. Respects his opponents. Shows the grace of a statesman... Trump? Not so much... He is going to be remembered as a low number on the president scale... I know that bursts your unicorn balloon, but facts is facts. Supporting Trump is pretty low on the patriotic scale.

Living in a POW camp giving info to the enemy must have been tough. He stayed in to benefit his career after. Talk to the men who endured torture and pain and see what they say about him. Oh wait, the video above had that and your response was "Whatever".

Ever notice how whenever people mention the statesmanship or heroic military service of John McCain, Trump supporters immediately go 50 years into the past and drum up videos or stories from suspect sites to tear McCain down....but if you go back in Trump's history even a decade they all scream FOUL, not fair?   Hypocrisy much?

You paint with a wide brush.  It’s just not necessarily true.  Yes there are some hard core people who do that but I don’t.  There is no need to trash someone’s record from 50 years ago. I believe that is what Liberals like to do, Kavanaugh.

You clearly mean Liberals ALSO, right?  I mean come on now, what I was referencing whenever it comes to McCain doesn't come from any Liberal.

I stand corrected, Liberals Also.

There are hard core people on both sides of the spectrum.  Take President Barry.  It didn’t matter what he did, his core believers didn’t care, they supported him no matter what. They are called fans short for fanatics.  Same for HRC, people loved her no matter what dirt they found on her or her husband.

You will never change those people’s minds.  I read an article, maybe you posted it that showed how Liberals are hard core and will never budge toward the middle

Conservatives have their extreme hard core that won’t budge but their is less of them than the Liberals. I believe the Conservatives were around 30-32% and the Liberals were more like 38-42% .  So you can deduct from this that the Presidential Candidates are really only fighting for the ones left, roughly 26 to 32%.  You can also deduct from this that a Republican has a little tougher path to gain voters. Of course this changes every election to some degree but I don’t think the writer is too far off.

Trump is constantly playing to his base, he has to keep them happy and win over some of those in the middle.  The Dems have to do the same thing and they are, free healthcare, higher minimum wage, pay off student loans, calling everyone a racist,  on and on.  Trump wraps himself in the American Flag, Calls Dems unlawful over open borders, Illegals voting, talking about how great the economy is doing etc etc.

Here is the bottom line.  All the rhetoric to keep a base happy and the constant demeaning of the other side is to try and sway the middle and independents.  Who will you believe and vote for come 2020.  Believe it or not if the economy is doing well that is probably the biggest swayer in an election.  McCain was up in the race in 2008 according to the Polls until what happened?  That’s right Wall Street mayhem.  If you remember oil went to 140 that summer.  Now, was that planned and will we see a repeat of that Market melt down.  Time will tell.  Market is at all time highs and earnings are still good but the China Trade War could sway the election depending on what happens good or bad.

Today I traded JBHT for 3 bucks. It’s a transport company and it had very good earnings last quarter. I know some will say everything is going to hell but a number of these trucking companies did well, possibly a sign the economy is still robust.

This is why I don’t listen to people or believe everything I read.  People have agenda’s but earnings don’t necessarily lie.  That’s why I’m a Technical Trader.  I trade what I see not what I think or feel based on prejudices from talking heads or agenda driven articles.

This Election you can count me 100% in the hard core Conservative side of the spectrum. There is NO way I will vote for Open Borders, Socialism, Spying,  and vile Congresswomen who cry racism’ but spew anti Jewish Hate tweets.  I also happen to be quit happy with the economy a far cry from just 3 years ago.

I know some of you will explain why you will vote Dem. That’s great you get your say and your vote no more or less than me.

My last sat word on this is if you are a Dem you better hope Trump doesn’t get a China deal done or an RV.   Hahahahaha. Go RV.  Go Trump in 2020!!!!

I can agree with that!!! But I don't believe anyone other than the CBI pulling the trigger. And I'm sure none of our presidents have any pull. If so "W" would have done it to show how Iraq paid for the war/ After all it was his people that came up with the new money. And there is no doubt Obama would have done it to make him look like a hero. Surely he is connected, he is a Muslim right? So seeing how neither of those guys had the influence to get it done, I don't think Trump will either... After all, he has turned our back on the globalists... You did see the IMF lady brush off Trump's daughter. Those people don't consider the Trumps part of their crowd. Kind of like if we wanted to hang out at Mar A Lago, I doubt they would let us in the bar...

LOL....

I have specific patterns I look for before and right after opening bell. Some may call what I’ve been doing lucky but I know better.  I’ve honned my trading skills over a 20 year time frame.  I took my lumps and I’ve paid my dues.  Trading is never easy but I have a strict discipline for enters and exits.  The trick is to buy when everyone else is afraid to.  I’m no hero, I wait to make sure a new up or down trend is going to happen and then go in.   The biggest mistake I see with newer traders is they buy at the top and sell at the bottom. Ouch, you won’t make much money trading like that.

Im glad Trump isn’t part of their crowd. The EU and IMF have been using the USA since WWII to the tune of billions and billions of dollars.

Or get greedy and think their stock will go up forever... I had a bio that I paid about .80 for one time and the word on the street was approval. It went to $4 and everyone said it would be $8... I held and it didn't get approved... It went to about .08 in a short time and I learned about greed.

That’s what a conversation is supposed to be all about.  You tell  your side, I’ll tell mine. There is really no need to be angry, disrespectful, snarky, arrogant, or ugly.  We all tend to fall into this trap and try to bend people to our way of thinking, but I’m trying real hard not to be that way going forward.  It’s just no use. Some people are entrenched in their beliefs and nothing will change them.  There are so many issues to argue about, and many will pick one or two and call it a deal.  Im no different other than I have 7 or 8 issues and the Dems are not right on any of my hot issues, Open Borders, Illegals voting, late term abortion ( any abortion), Socialism, Resistance, spying, Russian Collusion, the economy, etc etc.  You and Shabbs have your hot button issues, I get it.

Defending Donald Trump’s repeated racist taunts at Democratic congresswomen of color, Fox News host Pete Hegseth told correspondent-at-large Geraldo Rivera on Friday morning that it would be perfectly fine for him to utilize the president’s “go back to where you came from” message on him.

A day after Trump sorta disavowed the racist “send her back!” chant his rally crowd launched at Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rivera appeared on Fox & Friends and said he was “glad the president has said” he didn’t like the chants. At the same time, Rivera noted that the president’s original tweets targeting the “Squad” tapped into an “old racist trope,” something the longtime Trump pal had criticized the president for days earlier.

“Geraldo, but you, like many, have accused him of racism,” Hegseth replied. “But if you go back and look at that tweet, he’s not talking about race, he’s talking about whether or not you love this country and appreciate it. And if you don’t appreciate it and don’t love it, and don’t want to work to make it better, then maybe you could consider going somewhere else. There’s plenty of countries on Earth.”

Rivera, who is of Puerto Rican heritage, shot back at his colleague, yelling “what the hell” before pointing out that all four congresswomen—Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) and Omar—are citizens of the United States. Hegseth, meanwhile, said he would have no problem if someone personally told him he could love it or leave it.

“Intolerable—you cannot say that,” Rivera responded.

“You could totally say it,” Hegseth, an informal adviser to Trump, asserted.

“You can’t say it to me,” Rivera fired back.

“Well, I could say it to you,” the Fox & Friends host countered.

Rivera went on to recount the number of “street fights” he had in his younger years because he’s Puerto Rican, claiming he routinely heard people telling him to go back to where he came from even though he was born in New York. Hegseth brushed that off while continuing to insist that Trump is not referencing race but instead the lawmakers’ “principles” and “lack of gratitude.”

“A lot of people aren’t grateful to be here,” Rivera declared. “Gratitude is not a requirement of citizenship.”

Been there, done that too many times.  Now I take profits, recoup my initial investment and let ride whatever is left.  Free shares, but if the stock breaches the 50 moving average I dump. I don’t hold any stock below the 50 ma and many times 20 ma

I know I learned there is nothing wrong with 20 or 30 percent profit... You won't get that from a bank... I'm done with trying to score the moon shot return that I used to think was the way to go... You know one good hit is worth 10 bad buys? I don't think that any more.

You can’t defend racist remarks or vile profanity laden rhetoric.   Weather it’s Trump’s dumb tweet or Omar’s Anti Semitic tweets or Rashida calling Trump a MF’er.  It’s disgraceful for our leaders to behave like that and way beneath the office of President or Congress.  It’s divisive, hateful, and only incites a push back or *** for tat response, which only begets more of the same.  Hatfield’s vs the McCoys.
