KUWAIT: Kuwait's Emir Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah will hold an official visit to the Republic of Iraq on Wednesday to discuss the bilateral relations between the two countries.

The second visit of the Amir of Kuwait to Iraq comes during the period of assuming power in light of the unprecedented tensions and developments witnessed by the region, especially the actions aimed at the safety of oil supplies by sabotaging and hitting the oil and commercial vessels in the territorial waters of the UAE and the Sea of Oman, according to "KUNA".

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kuwait’s ruling emir, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, will visit Iraq on Wednesday, state news agency KUNA reported, as tensions grow in the region following recent attacks on tankers near the Strait of Hormuz.

Over the past month, two attacks near the Strait of Hormuz targeted six tankers, an area through which about a fifth of the world’s oil passes.

Both the US and Saudi Arabia have blamed the attacks on Iran, while Tehran denied being involved.

The visit by Kuwait’s ruler to Iraq “comes amid rising and unprecedented tensions and developments witnessed by the region, particularly the acts which targeted the safety of oil supplies through destruction and strikes on oil and commercial vessels,” KUNA reported.

According to news reports, Kuwait viewed the attacks on the tankers as a threat to international peace and security, but the small nation refrained from accusing any particular country or group.

Sabah over the past few years has acted as a regional mediator on multiple occasions. He has regularly met with Iraqi officials over the past few years, aiming to restore neighborly relations following Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990.

According to KUNA, it will be the emir’s second visit to Iraq since he became ruler in January 2006.

The President of the Republic Barham Salih received on Wednesday the Emir of the State of Kuwait Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who arrived at Baghdad International Airport, amid great hospitality and welcome.

The official reception ceremony was held where the national and Iraqi Emiri songs were played. Saleh and Sabah then searched the presidential guard, which was lined up to receive them. 
Then the President of the Republic accompanied the guest of Iraq in an official procession to the Peace Palace.

Iraqi President Barham Salih and Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah held talks on Wednesday at the Peace Palace in Baghdad.

President Saleh said that the relations between Iraq and Kuwait have made great strides forward, thanks to the wisdom and desire of the leaderships of the two countries to overcome the remnants of the past.

The President added that Iraq has a serious desire to build advanced relations with its neighbors, especially with Kuwait, in a way that serves the common interests of the two brotherly peoples.

He also pointed out that Iraq is looking at the nature of the current crisis in the region with a broad perspective, and seeks to achieve a comprehensive regional consensus on the basis of dialogue and good neighborliness between countries.

Saleh pointed out that he hoped that this visit would be an opportunity to fold the past and start a constructive relations page between the two countries.

For his part, the Emir of Kuwait stressed his country's keenness to support and enable Iraq to overcome the repercussions of the terrorist acts and its reconstruction.

Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad said that the visit represents an opportunity to discuss ways to strengthen and develop cooperation between the two countries and resolve the outstanding issues between them, and that they come as a culmination of strong relations.

Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad stressed that Kuwait firmly believes in the importance of Iraq's security and stability.

Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi received on Wednesday the Emir of Kuwait Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. 
"The Prime Minister, Adel Abdul Mahdi, received the Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah," the Prime Minister's Information Office said in a brief statement received by Mawazine News. 
The Amir of Kuwait Sabah Jaber Al-Sabah arrived Wednesday morning in Baghdad for an official visit. 
The President of the Republic, Barham Saleh, received the Amir of the State of Kuwait at Baghdad International Airport. 
"The visit will be a turning point in the relations between the two countries, ending previous understandings of issues and issues between Iraq and Kuwait, and a unified vision on the current crisis and escalation in the Gulf region," a senior government official said earlier this morning.
He pointed out that "cooperation agreements and memoranda of understanding are to be signed, focusing on maritime navigation, demarcation of the water and land borders, the Khawr Abd Allah file, joint oil fields, trade exchange and security cooperation between the two countries."
