Govt in crisis as Salvini calls for early elections

Finally...About time.....Even though I don't know how this will end...Maybe even worse than before ..if League party ( Salvini) allies itself with " Fratelli D' Italia" ( brothers of Italy) a neo-fascist party....Cure would be much worse than the illness....God Forbid!

I think I'll vote for Partito Democratico ( Dem Party) this time even though I do not share much of their political stances ( not leftist enough imho) but numerically they are the only ones capable of facing League Party...I had voted other small leftist parties before  but they didn't even reach enough votes to be able to enter Congress and / or Senate.....Unfortunately

The thing to do is beat Matteo Salvini and the League party which is bringing Italy more and more on the right

This last Gov't ( alliance between Five Star Movement and League) has been by far the worst Gov't Italy has ever had ( excluding the Mussolini 20 yr period, fascist dictatorship) and esp so the worst ever since the end of 2nd World War as it was full of incompetent, un-prepared, plain ignorant and extremely arrogant ministers...with a PM practically non-existent , Giuseppe Conte  ( made PM by Luigi Di Maio and Matteo Salvini who were the real  de facto Prime Ministers of Italy...Esp Matteo Salvini)

Salvini could take Italy out of EU, former PM warns

Matteo Salvini, who has plunged Italy into turmoil by pulling out of a coalition government, could eventually take the country out of the EU, a former prime minister warned on Sunday

Catherine Edwards
11 August 2019
18:31 CEST+02:00

Interior Minister Salvini, who announced last week that he was pulling his League party out of an increasingly acrimonious coalition with the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S), "has no principles," Enrico Letta
told AFP.

"One day, he can say he wants Europe, the next that he wants to leave. With Salvini, an Italian 'Brexit' is not impossible," said Letta, who was Italy's premier between April 2013 and February 2014.

Both the League and M5S campaigned in the 2018 elections on anti-EU platform, but have since stepped back from demands to exit the eurozone single currency bloc.

Under Salvini's hardline stance as interior minister, the populist government clashed with most of its EU partners when it closed Italian ports to refugees.

Rome has also sparred with Brussels over budget numbers and targets.

'Political chaos in Italy'

But on Saturday, Salvini said that pulling the country out of either the euro or the European Union "has never been in the works."

"The political chaos in Italy is complete and it's linked to the failure of this government majority," said Letta -- the former head of the centre-left Democratic Party -- in an impromptu interview at Lamezia Terme airport in
southern Italy.

Salvini ended the 14-month-old ruling alliance on Thursday, saying afterwards he had had enough of working with the M5S led by Luigi di Maio and what he said was its refusal to work together on key issues.

Letta called Salvini a "big opportunist" whose path was "not only sovereignist and racist," but whose "anti-migrant, anti-integration" ideas were becoming more widely accepted.

He predicted that new elections were "fairly likely" and that under Italy's voting system, Salvini - who is currently polling at 36-38 percent - could secure an absolute majority.

"This would be a grave danger for the country," Letta said, while also suggesting that a second government under Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte might be formed, at least until Italy's EU commissioner was named and Rome's budget
for 2020 was adopted.

Italy's government crisis hits European economy

European stock markets slumped on Friday and the pound hit a fresh two-year low against the euro as traders reacted to a fast-moving Italian political crisis and data showing Britain's Brexit-facing economy is on the brink of recession

AFP
9 August 2019
17:13 CEST+02:00

"Markets tumbled on Italian political risk," said Craig Erlam, senior market analyst at Oanda trading group.

Milan's stock market sank more than two percent after Italy's far-right Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini demanded snap elections on Thursday, triggering a political crisis.

The heightened political tensions in the heavily-indebted country - the eurozone's third largest economy - also caused yields to rise on Italian government bonds.

"Naturally, Italian stocks - and in particular, banks - and bonds have been hardest hit but they are dragging everyone else down with them," Erlam said.

As soon as the markets opened on Friday, the spread - or difference between yields on 10-year Italian government debt compared to those in Germany - jumped 25 points to 235 points, reflecting investor jitters.

Milan's stock exchange, opening for the first time since Salvini's statement late Thursday, plunged more than two percent.

"Uncertainty has a price: the spread, and the possible downgrade of Italy by rating agencies," Carlo Alberto Carnevale Maffe, professor at Milan's Bocconi University, told AFP.

Coincidentally, financial assessment agency Fitch is due to review its rating of Italy on Friday.

Its Italy rating currently stands at BBB with a negative outlook – two notches above "junk" or non-investment grade.

In October 2018, rating agency Moody's downgraded Italy's rating to "Baa3", just above "junk", over concerns about the budgetary choices being taken by the populist coalition of Salvini's League and the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S).

The already fragile economy "will pay the consequences of this crisis", Carnevale Maffe said.

The Italian economy is already struggling. After a "technical recession" in the second half of 2018, Italy experienced zero growth in its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the first six months of this year.

The European Commission and International Monetary Fund (IMF) expect Italian growth to be only 0.1 percent this year, while the government has forecast it at 0.2 percent.

But some experts are even more pessimistic, arguing that Italy is heading back into recession.

Unemployment stands at 9.7 percent, hitting 28.1 percent among 15-24 year olds - well above the euro area average of 7.5 percent for the general population and 15.4 percent among the young.

Italy is also hampered by a vast debt ratio - a whopping 132 percent of GDP, the eurozone's second-biggest after Greece.

Brussels has repeatedly called on Rome to do more to reduce its public deficit, leading to clashes between the populist government in Rome and the European Commission.

Italy agreed reduce it to 2.04 percent in 2019, instead of its previous forecast of 2.4 percent, after drawn-out negotiations over the country's big-spending budget.

Rescue ship plucks 85 from the sea as Richard Gere shines light on migrant plight

The Ocean Viking charity ship plucked 85 African migrants from the sea off Libya Friday, the latest rescue in the Mediterranean as Hollywood star Richard Gere boarded a second vessel to highlight the plight of those stranded

Catherine Edwards
10 August 2019
09:27 CEST+02:00

Gere boarded the Open Arms, which has 121 migrants stuck on board, to keep a spotlight on their situation as they wait for European nations to agree to take them in.

The Ocean Viking, operated by French NGOs SOS Mediterranee and Doctors without Borders (MSF), had to call off its initial search during the night and had to wait till dawn broke to finally find the migrant boat -- to applause from the passengers.

After setting off from Libya, they had been spotted on Thursday evening from a plane flying in the European Union's migrant monitoring operation Sophia.

They had come from Senegal, Mali, Ivory Coast and Sudan. Among them are five women and 15 children, the youngest aged one year.

"It was the start of our third day at sea," said a young woman as she clambered aboard Ocean Viking.

Crew members continued to scan the waves for a second vessel that set sail at the same time.

In Italy, Interior Minister Matteo Salvini fired off a warning to Oslo, where the rescue ship is registered.

"Italy is not legally bound, nor disposed to taken in clandestine, unidentified migrants from on board the Ocean Viking," he wrote.

He has said the same this week about the migrants on Open Arms, operated by Spanish charity Proactiva.

Norway's minister of justice and immigration, Joran Kallmyr, said on public television that the migrants should be "transported back to Africa, either to Tunisia or Libya. They should not be sent to Europe because then this action
will be an extension of the refugee route instead of a rescue operation".

Gere, who boarded the Open Arms on Friday, said he had just arrived from the nearby Italian island of Lampedusa.

"We brought as much water and as much food as we possibly can, for everybody on board," the American said.

"Everyone is doing OK now but they were on two boats on the ocean. One of the boats was turned back by the Libyan navy, we don't know what happened to
them.

"The most important thing for these people here is to be able to get to a free port, to be able to get off the boat, to start a new life for themselves."

Salvini also commented on the American movie star saying he hopes Gere "gets a bit of a suntan" and that he should take the migrants to Ibiza, a Spanish resort island.

'We were there for them'

European parliament speaker David Sassoli, an Italian, on Thursday wrote to EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker urging immediate aide for the migrants and a quick deal between the member states to take them in.

A commission spokesperson admitted Friday that no mediation effort was underway in Brussels to allow the Open Arms group to disembark on dry land in Europe.

States had been asked "to show solidarity and to contribute to finding a solution for the persons on board".

France announced on July 22 that 14 EU states had agreed on a "solidarity mechanism" to share out migrants saved on the Mediterranean, so long as they were allowed to disembark in Italy.

Meanwhile Proactiva Open Arms took the precaution of loading supplies on its yacht Astral, which was to set sail from Barcelona on Friday evening and reach the charity's ship off Italy some three days later.

On the Ocean Viking, migrants were being settled in for a lengthy stay.

Survival kits from MSF were handed out to each person -- dry clothes, food, tooth brushes etc -- before they were shown to sleeping quarters in containers lined up on deck.

The container walls have been painted with animals and other motifs.

"When they saw that, many broke into a smile," said an MSF staffer on board.

"They understood that we were not a cargo ship that happened by, but that we were there for them."

And and usual ( when there's very important, vital infact  stuff hovering over us, a matter of life & death , politically speaking) what does the Left ( centre left, more precisely) embodied here  by Partito Democratico????

While their new leader Nicola Zingaretti calls ( logically) for UNITY among the various factions of the party in order to beat the far-right ( League, Brothers of Italy, maybe even Forza Italia, Berlusconi's party on its way to total destruction as most voters  have moved by now to League and Brothers of Italy...but all three together could really collect a lot of votes)....

Well....The Dem Party looks like it's about to split itself ....Zingaretti on one side and Matteo Renzi , fmr party leader and fmr PM   has , allegedly, the intention of creating his own party  ( Civil Action) which would be such a stupid & self-destructive action in this particular political and historical moment  as the only result of that would be delivering the Country to the far-right....Senseless  esp coming from the ( supposed) Left....The epitome of the Absurd....Talk about shoot oneself in the foot......I'm totally speechless....

Note that  Matteo Salvini said very clearly he wants to become Premier ( Prime Minister) and he wants at that point  full power ( a statement used by Benito Mussolini, mind you)....God Forbid!
