At last!...That was so frickingly immoral, to keep those People ( men, women, pregnant women , children)  miles away from port forbidding them to get in port and dock....In a super-hot weather, with scarce food and water with hygiene issues ( due to few bathrooms onboard) etc....Shame on you, Mr.Salvini...... again......

Hum, Italy sounds a mess too. I feel terrible for the refugees and understand the country's wishes and ability to feed, clothe etc plus medical and remaining social services needs and country's inability to have funding for it all.

It is, Sage....Always been....What can I say? Some courageous politicians tried to make some progresses by changing some laws but that's very difficult as those who used to hold power are not so ready and willing to let go.....

Thanks for your kind and very humane words toward the refugees.....

But let me tell you honestly..... it's not only the lack of funds....they ( PTB) ALWAYS find funds for that they really want......It's the stubborness ( and dark heart, granted he has one) of our minister of the interiors  Matteo Salvini who made this ( war toward immigration) his favorite issue in order to collect votes and the need to blame  someone anyway for whatever supposed fault ....Never before anything like that had happened in this Country...He scares people by stating we're being invaded ( a blatant lie) and stuff like that....One of the results????  Hate crimes in this Country toward those with another skin color  etc.....multiplied,  verbal and physical attacks, most times without a reason...

Just a few days ago....An African-born 13 yr old girl adopted by an Italian family was walking in the tourist town where the family was vacationing..... when a group of local people from a car  screamed to her : " Get out , you shxxxy Nxxxxr"....The little girl was scared to death and went home crying desperately......Thank God the incident was only verbal in that case.....

That's the climate in this Country right now ...It happens almost every day....A great responsibility is of Mr Salvini who contributed to this hate climate.....I think it's just terrible and horrible...Once ( a couple of years ago) it wasn't that way at all...And a gesture like that would have had People reacting with rage and determination ( against the ones acting that way)...Now People ( most at least) look indifferent.....Extremely sad......

I forgot to add that EU of course is supposed to help us with this immigrant issue but they didn't care at all for years and years and that's of course totally wrong ....Lately it would seem the big new bosses ( after the May  elections) in EU are better understanding the problem and realize thay can't leave Italy alone on this vital issue  also because when the migrants arrive to the island of Lampedusa and Sicily  that's not only Italy but those are also the southen borders of Europe  so the most logical thing to do would be to equally distribute migrants among all 27 EU Countries but most of the times they refuse and deem it as a problem involving Italy only , which instead is not....If they keep refusing taking their fair share of migrants I'd say....Cut the EU funds to those Countries....Seems the logical, and just thing to do....JMHO

Italy's Political crisis

German-style PD-M5S govt accord needed says Delrio

EU countries offer to take in migrants stranded in Mediterranean

Six EU countries have offered to take in some of the 147 migrants stranded on a Spanish rescue ship near the Italian island of Lampedusa

AFP
15 August 2019
15:46 CEST+02:00

"France, Germany, Romania, Portugal, Spain and Luxembourg have told me that they are ready to welcome the migrants," Italian premier Giuseppe Conte said in an open letter addressed to far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini who has sought to ban the Spanish charity Proactiva's Open Arms rescue vessel from entering Italian waters.

Italy's defence minister on Thursday blocked Salvini's new decree, which came after Salvini signed another one earlier this month, saying it was needed to protect public order.

But Proactive appealed to an administrative court which on Wednesday suspended the first decree.

Salvini then signed another decree blocking the ship but his power has weakened since he withdrew his support last week from the coalition government between his far-right League party and the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S).

On Thursday Defence Minister Elisabetta Trenta, a M5S party member, who must sign off on Salvini's decree, announced that she has decided not to do so.

"I took this decision for solid legal reasons, listening to my conscience," Trenta said in a statement.

"We must never forget that behind the polemics of the past few days, there are children and young people who suffered violence and abuse of all types. Politics must never lose sight of humanity."

The humanitarian rescue ship Open Arms was anchored on Thursday off the Italian island of Lampedusa.

The migrants had been plucked from boats in the Mediterranean this month with weather conditions encouraging more departures from Libya.

Both Italy and Malta have refused Open Arms permission to dock and unload its passengers.

On Wednesday, however, Trenta dispatched two ships to escort the Open Arms out of concern to evacuate the 32 minors after two weeks on board.

No plan to use force

Proactiva said it was assured that she does not plan to use force against the migrant ship.

Meanwhile on Thursday, the Spanish government said it was ready to accept some of the migrants on the Open Arms, on condition that an accord is reached on distributing the migrants between several European countries.

"Our country is ready to participate in a balanced distribution of the migrants on the boat," the government said in a statement, adding that it was working with the European Commission and other EU nations "to find a common solution".

Spaid had on Tuesday dismissed a request from the ship's captain to take 31 minors off the Open Arms, arguing that he did not have the legal authority to make an asylum request for them.

Another rescue ship, the Ocean Viking, operated by SOS Mediterranee and Doctors without Borders (MSF), which is also looking for a port to dock with more than 350 migrants on board, was on Thursday also near the coasts of Lampedusa and Malta.

How an unexpected alliance thwarted Salvini's bid for Italian snap election

The spectre of a snap election in Italy appears to have retreated after two former foes teamed up to defeat a far-right no-confidence bid

AFP/The Local
15 August 2019
12:45 CEST+02:00

The leader of the anti-migration League, Matteo Salvini, pulled the plug on his coalition with the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S) last week, hoping for a no-confidence vote that would topple the government.

But his abandoned partner found an unexpected ally in the opposition Democratic Party (PD).

Both M5S and PD on Tuesday voted against Salvini despite his last-minute offer to back a plan to slash the number of the country's lawmakers.

Salvini said he would back the reform, one of M5S's key pledges, on condition they supported a no-confidence vote in independent Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte's government and hold snap polls.

M5S was having none of it. Leader Luigi Di Maio pointed out that Salvini had backed himself into a corner as electoral reform would take at least eight months, during which an election cannot be held.

"Salvini is at a dead end, if he wants to reduce the number of lawmakers, he can't vote no-confidence in Conte," Di Maio said late on Tuesday.

The day after the failed vote, Salvini said he would try for another no-confidence vote on August 20th, when Conte is to address the Senate. But he made no mention of parliamentary reform.

"On August 20th, we will vote no-confidence in the prime minister. No to palace manoeuvres and to technical and bizarre governments. The democratic, transparent, linear path is that of elections," Salvini said on Wednesday.

If Salvini backs the parliamentary reform, his support – along with that of former PD premier Matteo Renzi at the other end of the political spectrum – means it will likely be passed by MPs on August 22nd or 23rd.

The money saved from having fewer lawmakers, around €50 million ($56 million), should be spent on schools, roads and hospitals, said Di Maio.

However the reform must then be put to referendum, which takes at least six months, said experts on Italy's complex parliamentary system, plus another two months is required to draw up a new electoral law, during which time no elections can be held.

The broken League-M5S coalition would remain paralyzed and unable to agree on the crucial 2020 budget which must find an extra 23 billion euros or Italy's VAT rate would rise from 22 to 25 percent in January next year.

M5S and PD alliance?

Renzi has proposed a M5S-PD alliance to pass the budget, despite the virulent exchanges between the two parties after Renzi resigned in December 2016.

Both the PD and M5S remain divided on cooperating with each other.

The M5S left wing represented by lower house speaker Roberto Fico is more favourable, while the more right-wing Di Maio faction is more reluctant.

"A government limited to the PD and M5S created with the aim of lasting until 2022 is the most realistic scenario, provided they find a coherent basic programme and a minimum of shared vision," Stefano Folli wrote on Wednesday in the left-leaning Repubblica newspaper.

Di Maio is instead seeking a reshuffle with more M5S portfolios, and PD parliamentary support, as part of a second Conte government.

Nevertheless, nothing is ever certain in Italy's fluid politics, and the League and its potential allies from Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right Forza Italia and Giorgia Meloni's extreme-right Brothers of Italy could garner 50 percent of votes in an election, according to the latest opinion polls.

I personally have serious doubts there will be an alliance between Partito Democratico and Five Star Movement.....Many differences between the 2 on a lot of issues...

BUT....If that's the only way to get rid of the League and Salvini....Then....I will think about it.....

Umbertino, very sad. I'm not for being over run with illegals but I am for accepting those that come to the country legally and with due process. No foot dragging etc. However I still am concerned humanitarian wise. But for the grace of God I could be looking for a country. Sorry for Italy too and agree that those in power do get what they ultimately want.

Again thanks...As for the ( sensible ) request of coming legally...Italy has cut out practically any way to come here that way by not giving visas....Most of those People escape wars ( so they are entitled to political asylum), droughts, famine, extreme poverty, religious persecutions etc....And when they arrive ( from many African Countries) in Libya, they are put in jails, detention camps, tortured and forced to call families and relatives in order to get money to pay those Libyan jailers / torturers / etc...Add to that that in Libya they had been having a war between factions for 5 / 6 months now and the situation is terrible ( it was already terrible for migrants there even before the war wit the tortures, killings, systematic rapes of all women and girls, the continuous requests for money, etc) ...One of those centers got bombed and a lot of People died.....And our minister of the Interiors Salvini keeps saying Libya is safe and they should all sent back there....He lives in a parallel universe evidently...He is the one who should be sent back to Libya and live in one of those detention centers for a year at least!!!!  He'd maybe learn one thing or two on basic human  rights and how other humans should be treated ....with dignity...Not leaving them on a ship a few yards away from Lampedusa port for more than 16 days now, with only 2(two) bathrooms for more than 130 people....He is indeed a  ...( leave blank)...He is a SHAME for Mankind indeed
