Trump recently called off military actions against Iran

US president added that military action was still "a possibility"

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said on Saturday his administration was “moving forward” and that he will impose additional sanctions against Iran in an effort to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

He added that military action was still “a possibility,” while also saying that he hoped “Iran is smart and cares about its people.”

“We are putting additional sanctions on Iran,” Trump said. “In some cases we are going slowly, but in other cases we are moving rapidly.”

Trump, who was speaking to reporters at the White House, made his comments after recently calling off military actions against Iran to retaliate for the downing of a US military drone.

But Trump also indicated he was open to reversing the escalation, adding he was willing to quickly reach a deal with Iran that he said would bolster the country’s flagging economy.

He said the Islamic republic could be a “wealthy” country if it renounced nuclear weapons, amid soaring tensions between the two nations.

“We’re not going to have Iran have a nuclear weapon,” Trump told reporters

The president said he would be traveling to the Camp David presidential retreat to talk about Iran, saying he wanted to “start over” with Iran.

Trump last year withdrew the United States from an international accord designed to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions in exchange for sanctions relief.

Tensions have been on the rise ever since then, as Trump reinstated sanctions designed to choke off Iranian oil sales and cripple its economy in an effort to force new nuclear negotiations.

“Everyone was saying I’m a war-monger, and now they say I’m a dove,” Trump said on Saturday as he was peppered with questions about the Iran drama.

“I think I am neither, if you want to know the truth. I’m a man with common sense, and that’s what we need in this country, is common sense.”

Trump insisted it is up to the Iranian leadership how the current crisis plays out.

“If the leadership of Iran behaves badly, then it’s going to be a very, very bad day for them,” he said.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) -
The Middle East Internet site on Saturday revealed a request by Riyadh to London for strikes against Iranian targets.
A senior British official was quoted by the website as saying that "London refused to respond to a request from a Saudi intelligence official to pressure it in this regard."
"Saudi intelligence chief Khaled al-Humaidan has appealed to the British authorities to launch limited attacks on Iranian military targets but has refused to do so," he said.
The "appeal" came hours after President Donald Trump retreated from planned US attacks on Tehran, just 10 minutes before its implementation.
"The intelligence chief was accompanied by the Saudi minister of state for foreign affairs Adel al-Jubeir on his trip to London," the British official said.
"The Saudi official gave intelligence about the recent attack on two tankers in the Gulf of Oman to persuade Britain, but it refused."
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard has announced last Thursday, that his air defenses dropped a US drone aircraft, entered the country's airspace over the province of Hormuzgan in southern Iran.

Report: US-Iranian conflict threatens gas markets more than oil

Report: US-Iranian conflict threatens gas markets more than oil

21 June 2019 09:18 PM
Direct: a press report said that the potential conflict between the United States and Iran could have devastating effects for the markets of liquefied natural gas is much more than crude oil shipments in the world.

A report released by Bloomberg said Friday that major importers are less willing to disrupt liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies because their stocks are relatively small compared to oil stocks.

For example, at the end of March, Japan had imports of LNG for about 19 days for enough oil in its strategic reserves to cover 133 days.

According to the US Energy Information Administration, about a quarter of the amount of liquefied natural gas (LNG) passes through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz is an important sea passage on Iran's border and trucks carry about one-fifth of the world's oil.

Tehran has previously threatened to suspend fuel shipments through this vital corridor .

And increased tensions in the region after the approval of US President Donald Trump on a military strike against Iran, before deciding to cancel the order.

These developments come after the Iranian forces dropped a US drone aircraft across the Strait of Hormuz.

"Regardless of the rise in oil prices, LNG prices are likely to double this increase," said David Hewitt, oil and gas analyst at Macquarie Capital.

He added that the market would not be able to offset the entire amount of cargo from the region if cross-strait supply was stopped.

Most of Qatar's gas shipments go to Asian countries and Japan, and South Korea and India are among the largest buyers of LNG, according to the International Gas Association.

6 airlines announced to modify the course of their flights to avoid the Strait of Hormuz

6 airlines announced to modify the course of their flights to avoid the Strait of Hormuz
Strait of Hormuz
 22 June 2019 12:20 AM

Mubasher: Six airlines worldwide have announced that they will adjust their route to avoid the Strait of Hormuz, following warnings from the US federal agency after Iran dropped an unmanned reconnaissance aircraft .

On Friday, Italian Airlines decided to adjust its route to India in a hummus ambience, joining several countries that have taken similar action .

An Emirates spokesman said that the company has taken precautionary measures, including changing the course of all flights away from any potential risks, given the current situation .

Flydubai's spokesman pointed out that the company has modified some of the current routes in the region as a precautionary measure .

While Etihad Airways noted that it was an assessment of the situation and guidance of the US Federal Aviation Administration on avoiding the Strait of Hormuz .

As British Airways announced, divert its flights away from the Strait of Hormuz; after Iran dropped on Thursday, a US drone aircraft over the strait .

German Lufthansa also decided to avoid flights to and from Asian capitals in the hotspots .

Dutch airline KLM said it had decided not to fly over the Hermes Strait , against the background of warnings from the US federal agency .

It is noteworthy that Iran dropped a US aircraft march of the US military in the international airspace in the Strait of Hormuz .

The US president, Donald Trump , has agreed to military attacks against Iran in response to the downing of a US aircraft, before retreating from the resolution to protect the lives of civilians as he described it .

The German state today called for the peaceful settlement of the Gulf crisis and for political solutions to the crisis between Iran and the United States .

This comes in conjunction with the General Authority of Civil Aviation in the Sultanate of Oman, it follows the air traffic routes in the northern Sultanate

King Salman meets Pompeo amid US-Iran tensions

Mike Pompeo: US wants to build a global coalition against Iran

But is prepared to negotiate with Iran, without preconditions, in a bid to ease tensions

WASHINGTON: King Salman met with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday in Jeddah for talks amid mounting tensions with Iran.
Pompeo is also expected to meet Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, before flying for talks in the UAE, US officials said.

Pompeo said earlier he wanted to build a global coalition against Iran during urgent consultations in the Middle East, following a week of crisis that saw the United States pull back from the brink of a military strike on Iran.
Pompeo spoke Sunday as he left Washington for Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, Sunni Arab allies that are alarmed by Shiite Iran’s increasing assertiveness and are working to limit its influence in the region. His stops in Jeddah and Abu Dhabi were hastily arranged late last week as additions to a trip to India from where he will join President Donald Trump in Japan and South Korea.

“We’ll be talking with them about how to make sure that we are all strategically aligned, and how we can build out a global coalition, a coalition not only throughout the Gulf states, but in Asia and in Europe, that understands this challenge as it is prepared to push back against the world’s largest state sponsor of terror,” Pompeo said about Iran.
But even as Pompeo delivered his tough talk, he echoed President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence in saying the US is prepared to negotiate with Iran, without preconditions, in a bid to ease tensions. Those tensions have been mounting since Trump last year withdrew the US from a global nuclear deal with Iran and began pressuring Tehran with economic sanctions. A fresh round of Iran sanctions is to be announced Monday in a bid to force the Iranian leadership into talks.
“They know precisely how to find us,” Pompeo said.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman meanwhile said on Monday Tehran welcomes any defusion of tensions in the Gulf region following weeks of deteriorating relations with Washington.

“We welcome defusion of tensions in the region. We do not want rise of tensions,” Abbas Mousavi was quoted as saying by ISNA news agency. But he also described the US Middle East peace plan as “shameful” and “doomed to failure,” and accused teh UK of siding with the Americans against Tehran.

It was a week of topsy-turvy pronouncements on US policy toward Iran that careened between the bellicose, the conciliatory and back again after Iran shot down an American military drone and boasted it would not bow to Washington’s pressure.
Trump initially said Iran had made a “very big mistake” and that it was “hard to believe” that shooting down the drone on Thursday was not intentional. He later said he thought it was an unintentional act carried out by a “loose and stupid” Iranian and called off retaliatory military strikes against Iran. On Saturday, Trump reversed himself and claimed that Iran had acted “knowingly.”
But Trump also said over the weekend that he appreciated Iran’s decision to not shoot down a manned US spy plane, and he opined about eventually becoming Iran’s “best friend” if Tehran ultimately agrees to abandon its drive to build nuclear weapons and he helps the country turn around its crippled economy.
Then Trump’s national security adviser, John Bolton, stepped in Sunday with a blunt warning from Jerusalem, where he was traveling. Bolton said Iran should not “mistake US prudence and discretion for weakness” after Trump called off the military strike. Trump said he backed away from the planned strikes after learning that about 150 people would be killed, but he said the military option remained.
A longtime Iran hawk, Bolton emphasized that the US reserved the right to attack at a later point.
“No one has granted them a hunting license in the Middle East. As President Trump said on Friday our military is rebuilt, new and ready to go,” Bolton said during an appearance with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, himself a longtime and outspoken Iran critic.
On Sunday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani blamed the United States’ “interventionist military presence” for fanning the flames. He was quoted by the official IRNA news agency. Shortly thereafter, Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen launched an attack against an airport in southern Saudi Arabia, killing one person and wounding seven others, according to the Saudi military. Such attacks have been cited by Saudi and US officials as examples of Iran’s “malign behavior” in the Middle East.
Pompeo, who addressed reporters from the tarmac before he boarded his airplane in Washington, declared the goal of his talks with the Saudi kingdom and the UAE is to deny Iran “the resources to foment terror, to build out their nuclear weapon system, to build out their missile program.”
“We are going to deny them the resources they need to do that, thereby keep American interests and American people safe all around the world,” said Pompeo, who was due to arrive in the region after one person was killed and seven others were wounded in an attack by Iranian-allied Yemeni rebels on an airport in Saudi Arabia on Sunday evening, the Saudi military said.
The downing of the unmanned aircraft marked a new high in the rising tensions between the United States and Iran. The Trump administration has vowed to combine a “maximum pressure” campaign of economic sanctions with a buildup of American forces in the region, following the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers.
US military cyber forces on Thursday launched a strike against Iranian military computer systems, according to US officials. The cyberattacks disabled Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps computer systems that controlled its rocket and missile launchers, the officials said.
Throughout the recent crisis, Trump has wavered between bellicose language and actions toward Iran and a more accommodating tone, including a plea for negotiations. Iran has said it is not interested in a dialogue with Trump. His administration is aiming to cripple Iran’s economy and force policy changes by re-imposing sanctions, including on Iranian oil exports.

A senior US official said on Monday that Iran's attack on oil tankers and the downing of a US reconnaissance plane was an attempt to break the difficulties it was suffering from US sanctions.

"The Commission has submitted a quick report to Trump and other officials on Iran's capabilities and capabilities to respond to any US attack after the plane was shot down last Thursday," Defense Intelligence Director General Robert Ashley told a news briefing.

"Iran feels that it is in a better position externally to increase its influence in Iraq, but it suffers internally , while the recent attacks aim to change the status quo, because of the increasing difficulties it suffers,

"The sanctions are  hurting Iran and the government, and people feel very stressed," Ashley said. "The policy of maximum pressure by Washington is beginning to work, so we see the Iranians trying to break the pressure and get out of the status quo through attacks in the Gulf Sea."

Iran remains defiant as US imposes new sanctions

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The US government is due to ratchet up its “campaign of maximum financial pressure” on Iran on Monday by imposing new economic measures, with the UK’s foreign secretary further raising tension in the region by suggesting that Britain could potentially join United States in a military strike against Iran.

The measures will aim to “deny Iran the resources to foment terror, to build out their nuclear weapons system, to build out their missile program,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said yesterday before leaving for the Middle East.

The new measures come during a cluster of violence in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. Iran shot down a naval reconnaissance drone in the Gulf of Oman on June 20, while two attacks on oil tankers in the same area have raised serious concerns about the future availability of the Strait of Hormuz, through which around one third of the world’s seaborne oil is transported.

While President Donald Trump aborted a military strike on Iranian installations at the last minute on Thursday, Washington nonetheless launched a cyberattack on Iranian weapons systems in response to the downing of the drone.

Tehran denied that the cyberattacks had been effective. “I must say that we have long dealt with cyber terrorism … not one attack but we neutralized 33 million attacks with Dejfa [national] firewall last year,” Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi, Iran’s minister for information and communications technology said on Twitter. “They have not carried out a successful attack, even though they have tried many times.”

President Donald Trump administration has imposed one of its most aggressive waves of sanctions ever on Iran because of what the administration calls Tehran’s ‘malign’ activities in the Middle East.  A 180 day wind-down period expired last November following US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Actions (JCPOA), otherwise known as the 2015 nuclear deal, in May 2018.

Iran has retaliated to crippling US economic sanctions by suspending two of the main articles of said nuclear deal in early May of this year, after the US decided not to renew six-month waivers to eight main customers of Iranian oil, a main source of Tehran’s revenue. Tehran said it will suspend more measures in about ten days time when the 60 day ultimatum it gave to the remaining members of the JCPOA expires.

Foreign Minister Javad Zarif told the Iranian parliament on Monday that he admired the Iranian people’s resolve against the US unjust sanctions, adding that Iran would sustain its resistance to US encroachments. “With all our might and energy we shall stand against the sanctions and the threats of the enemy and this resistance shall continue,” Zarif told a group of reformist parliamentarians on Monday morning.

The tension in the Middle East has caused global consternation, with a number of countries trying to de-escalate the tension by sending envoys to Washington and Tehran.

At the same time as a top UK government envoy had been dispatched to Iran to de-escalate tensions, the UK’s foreign secretary told the Daily Mail on Monday that the UK could join a US strike on Iran.

‘We will stand by the United States as our strongest ally, but of course we have to consider any requests for military support on a case-by-case basis,” Jeremy Hunt said.

Hunt’s position is certain to provoke a harsh response from Tehran, and appears to undermine the mission of Dr Andrew Murrison, the Minster of State for the Middle East and North Africa, whose trip aimed to “find diplomatic solutions to reduce the current tensions,”  and to remind Iranians that they should not conduct attacks on oil tankers in the Persian Gulf – despite vehement Iranian denials in their involvement.

President Trump has said that while military action is still on the table, he would want to talk to Iranians without any preconditions. Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Seyyed Abbas Mousavi reiterated Iran’s position that Tehran is not seeking war but said that Iran would not hesitate to respond to any act of aggression.

“We welcome the drop in tension and we are not seeking to raise the tension in the region,” Mousavi told reporters in a press conference in Tehran. “While Iran is not in favor of tension in the region, it has kept up its military preparedness. The downing of the American aggressive drone is an example of this preparedness and we hope they would not take such actions again.”

Mousavi described the root cause of the tension in the region as the unfaithfulness of the US government to its international commitment and the “US economic terrorism waged against Iran.”

The effects of growing US economic sanctions have permeated Iranian society. The national currency has lost around 70% of its value, rates of unemployment and inflation are sky-high, and good prices have gone through the roof.

Iranian oil minister Bijan Zanganeh told Farsnews on Monday that news of a huge reduction in oil exports was “categorically false” -  but refused to provide figures for the amount Iran is currently exporting.

Iran’s oil exports, the main target of the US sanctions, have dropped from around 2.8 million barrels per day (bpd) in April 2018, one month before the US withdrew from the nuclear deal, to around 400,000 bpd in May, according to Reuters. The Iranian budget for the current Islamic year of 1398 (beginning March 21) forecasts an export of 1.5 million barrels per day at a price of $54 dollars per barrel.

New sanctions take aim at Iran Supreme Leader

New sanctions take aim at Iran Supreme Leader

US President Donald Trump today signed an executive order to impose a new wave of sanctions on Iran. The sanctions will deny Iran's Supreme Leader, his office and those closely affiliated with him access to key financial resources and support, he said in a press conference on Monday.

"The assets of Ayatollah Khamanei and his office will not be spared from the sanctions. These measures represent a strong and proportionate response to Iran's increasingly provocative actions. We will continue to increase pressure on Tehran, until the regime abandons its dangerous activities and aspirations," Trump said.

The president then listed the "provocative" actions as "the pursuit of nuclear weapons, increased enrichment of uranium, development of ballistic missiles, engagement with and supporting terrorism, fueling of foreign conflicts, and belligerent acts directed against the United States and its allies".

“These sanctions have been very effective in cutting off funds going to the IRGC and other people….these are highly, highly effective in locking up the Iranian economy”, US Secretary of the Treasury Steve Mnuchin told reporters, following Trump’s signing of the executive order.

Mnuchin said that the sanctions had “locked up tens and tens of billions of dollars”.

When asked what the new rounds of sanctions were responding to directly the oil tankers or the downing of the drone, Mnuchin said that some “were in the works” previously and some were “because of recent activities”.

Mnuchin said that the president had also instructed him that the US would be imposing sanctions on Iran’s Foreign Minister Javad Zarif later this week.

The US Treasury Department said that sanctions had also been  imposed on eight senior commanders of Navy, Aerospace, and Ground Forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).

“These commanders sit atop a bureaucracy that supervises the IRGC’s malicious regional activities, including its provocative ballistic missile program, harassment and sabotage of commercial vessels in international waters, and its destabilizing presence in Syria,” the department said in a statement.

The US withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Actions (JCPOA), otherwise known as the 2015 nuclear deal, in May 2018. Following a 180 day wind-down period, the US imposed sanctions that primarily targeted Iran's oil industry.

The sanctions have dealt a massive economic blow to Iran's economy. The national currency has lost around 70% of its value, and rates of unemployment and inflation are sky-high.

"We want the stoppage immediately of their [Iran's] sponsoring of terrorism. They sponsor terrorism at a level that nobody's ever seen before," Trump added.

The new measures come during a spurt of violence in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. Iran shot down a naval reconnaissance drone in the Gulf of Oman on June 20, while several oil tankers have been attacked in the same area.

The US has repeatedly accused Iran for the attacks - accusations Iran has vehemently denied.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned yesterday of the new sanctions, stating that their aim was to “deny Iran the resources to foment terror, to build out their nuclear weapons system, to build out their missile program,” before leaving for talks with Saudi Arabia.

This is a developing story...
