Special: Books - Saad Abdul Aziz:

In light of the escalating tension between the United States and Iran, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Adel Abdul Mahdi, visited Kuwait last Wednesday for the first time since taking office in October.

Iraqi sources confirmed that "the visit of Abdul Mahdi to Kuwait aims to complete his visit to neighboring countries and joint coordination, especially after the meeting of the High Joint Committee between the two countries in Kuwait, on 12 May, under the chairmanship of the two foreign ministers."

An attempt to overcome the legacy of the painful past ..

The Iraqi prime minister tried to dispel the doubts of the Kuwaitis, stressing that his government is working to clear the problems between "Iraq" and "Kuwait", in light of the direction of the country and its openness and stability, and the signing of agreements and projects with various neighboring countries and friendly countries.

Adding that "the two sides discussed the strengthening of bilateral relations and joint cooperation between the two peoples and neighboring countries, and developments in the situation in the region and various issues of mutual concern. "We have come a long way and have overcome many outstanding issues. We are working hand in hand to build a better future and integration relationships. We have many participants and opportunities, especially in the areas of construction, reconstruction and services."

The Iraqi Prime Minister pointed out that: "delegations and joint committees have made important progress in examining the files of cooperation in all areas and look forward to more."

"We are seeking to overcome the legacy of the past and remove all obstacles," he said. "The Iraqi government aims to consolidate stability, services and reform, and start a fruitful beginning in our bilateral relations."

Relations have seen a qualitative development ..

"The relations between Iraq and Kuwait have witnessed a qualitative development," he said during a meeting with Kuwait's National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim. "We have moved from the stage of fears and ambitions to a stage of trust and cooperation in all fields, And a number of Kuwaiti parliamentarians in the building of the "Council of the Nation", and the presence of deputies from the members of the Iraqi delegation.

He added: "The good relations we have with all neighboring countries reflect on our internal situation in a positive way and lead to reconciliation between our diverse people, and vice versa also because our environment is diverse," stressing that: "What brings us together with Kuwait is the large participants And the historical, cultural and geographical importance; and the natural and human resources we possess together. These relations and wealth are not destroyed except by the adventures and wrongful and aggressive policies that have destroyed the two countries and lost their wealth, and we have overcome most of them and there is little left. "

Rejection of policy axes ..

He stressed that "Iraq will not enter into the policy of axes, alignments, convictions and accusations; and we hope that the upcoming Arab and Islamic conferences calm speech serves the stability of the region, which suffered the scourge of wars and destruction."

The two victims of Saddam's regime

"We and Iraq are victims of a regime that has harmed the people and the two countries, and we must continue together the efforts of building, reconstruction and overcoming the remnants of the past," he said. Al-Sabah expressed his appreciation for the Iraqi Prime Minister's policy of establishing relations with all, and for Iraq witnessing development and stability thanks to this policy, stressing Kuwait's readiness to contribute to reconstruction efforts in various Iraqi provinces.

Kuwait looks forward to increased cooperation

For his part, the Speaker of the Kuwaiti National Assembly, Marzouq Al-Ghanim, said that Kuwait's "National Assembly" in all its facets and orientations with a "strong Iraq" is stable and prosperous; we want distinguished relations, and we look forward to increasing cooperation between the two countries, He expressed his satisfaction at the progress, stability and openness of Iraq in its relations with neighboring countries, stressing the support of the Iraqi government in its policy and directions and its efforts to serve Iraq and restore its real and constructive role in the region.

A fruitful visit!

Kuwait's Deputy Foreign Minister, Khalid Al-Jarallah, stressed that the visit of "Abdul-Mahdi" to Kuwait is fruitful and positive; it provides an opportunity to exchange views and discuss relations between the two countries.

"The two sides agreed to develop and enhance cooperation in all fields, especially as this visit comes after the seventh joint ministerial committee," he said. Stating that "it has been confirmed what has been agreed upon in that committee."

"We believe that we are moving in the right direction to achieve the interests of the two countries and peoples and strengthen their bilateral relations in light of the difficult situation in the region," he said.

Can the last page be folded?

The question now arises: Can the visits of Iraqi officials to Kuwait and the strengthening of joint cooperation between the two countries lead to the collapse of the painful past and forget the anniversary of the Iraqi invasion of their country by former Iraqi ruler Saddam Hussein? .

This question may remain unanswered for a long time. But it is the ability of Iraqi leaders to take constructive steps to reassure the Kuwaiti people and dispel their doubts and fears.

About 28 years ago, on August 2, 1990, the Kuwaitis awoke to the presence of Iraqi military vehicles whose borders had been breached, an event the region as a whole still bears its consequences to today. At the dawn of 2 August 1990, more than 20,000 Iraqi troops had penetrated the border into Kuwait from four axes and quickly took over the capital, supported by the Iraqi air force.

Kuwait suffered heavy human and material losses. Hundreds of Kuwaitis were killed and hundreds of Kuwaitis were injured. Hundreds of oil wells were set on fire, causing huge environmental disasters and long delays in oil production.
