ExxonMobil Evacuation Hurts Deal with Iraq: Oil Minister

Basnews English 19/05/2019 - 20:42 Published in World

ERBIL — By evacuating its foreign employees from Iraq, ExxonMobil will hurt a deal Baghdad that was about to be made with the company, said the Iraqi Oil Minister Thamir Ghadhban.

"Had we concluded we would have signed the heads of agreement," he said, referring to a preliminary document that would set out terms of cooperation on the South Integrated Project. "But now they are out of the country, why should I run after them?”

Earlier on Thursday, ExxonMobil moved all the foreign employees from Basra’s West Qurna oilfield to Dubai. The decision was made after US State Department ordered part of its embassy and consulate staff to leave Iraq for Iranian threats.

Ghadhban said the evacuations were not due to security threats in Iraq, instead blaming "political reasons, attributed to political tensions in the region”, as reported by al-Jazeera.

"For us, this withdrawal is unacceptable and unjustified because other international companies are working freely and safely in developing oil fields,” he added.

ERBIL — Sources reported an explosion near Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone which is home to US Embassy and other diplomatic missions in the capital of Iraq.

At least two diplomatic sources in Baghdad confirmed the explosion in a statement to Reuters.

Sky News said the explosion was the result of a rocket which landed near the Green Zone.

Iraqi authorities are yet to comment and provide accurate information on the reports.

It comes amid increasing tensions between Iran and US. Washington has already increased the level of threat and put its forces on alerts in Iraq.

US said it has received indications that demonstrate imminent threat from Iran and its allied Shi’ite militias in Iraq.

Katyusha rocket strikes Baghdad Green Zone: military

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A Katyusha rocket landed within the fortified walls of the Green Zone in central Baghdad on Sunday night, security forces confirmed. There are currently no reports of casualties.

“A Katyusha rocket fell in the middle of the Green Zone without causing any losses, details to come later,” Yahya Rasool, spokesman for the Security Media Cell, confirmed in a tweet.

The Green Zone contains the Iraqi parliament and the US embassy.

The incident comes days after the US ordered the withdrawal of non-emergency personnel from Iraq and warned its nationals about the risk of violence or kidnapping because of an “imminent” threat that is directly tied to Iran and Iranian-backed groups.

The State Department also increased its travel advisory to the most extreme level, telling people not to travel to Iraq because of the risk or “terrorism, kidnapping, and armed conflict,” on Wednesday.

Hundreds of US citizens live in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and some 5,000 American troops are stationed at Iraqi bases at the invitation of Baghdad.

This is a developing story…

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Iraq’s military confirmed on Sunday that a rocket was fired into the capital’s fortified Green Zone where several foreign diplomatic offices, including the US embassy, are located.

“A Katyusha rocket fell in the middle of the Green Zone without causing any losses,” a statement from the Iraqi military said, adding it would provide further details later.

Although less accurate than conventional weaponry, the Katyusha multiple rocket launcher is capable of delivering explosives to a target quicker.

Witnesses in the area reported sounds of blasts in central Baghdad, with some suggesting they were heard near the United States embassy, Reuters reported.

The incident comes as the US State Department on Wednesday ordered the departure of non-emergency US government employees from its embassy in Baghdad and consulate-general in the Kurdistan Region’s Erbil, as well as the suspension of normal visa services.

A week ago, the White House announced it was dispatching an aircraft carrier and B-52 bombers to the region in response to intelligence that Iran was planning an attack against US targets or US allies.

Other nations, including the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands also responded to the US-Iran standoff.

Britain raised the threat level for its forces in Iraq due to “a range of threats to UK and coalition forces” related to “Iran’s destabilizing behavior in the region.”

The German and Dutch Defense Ministries said they had temporarily paused their training missions in Iraq, which also includes troops that train Kurdish Peshmerga forces in the autonomous Kurdish region.

A spokesperson for the US-led Coalition, however, told Kurdistan 24 the training mission throughout Iraq would continue, despite increased tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Rocket fired in Iraqi capital, no casualties

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A rocket was fired in Iraqi capital Baghdad’s heavily-fortified Green Zone, which houses government buildings and foreign embassies, but caused no casualties, the Iraqi military said on Sunday.

A blast was heard in central Baghdad on Sunday night, Reuters witnesses said and two Baghdad-based diplomatic sources also said they heard the blast.

“A Katyusha rocket fell in the middle of the Green Zone without causing any losses, details to come later,” the military said in a brief statement.

The Katyusha multiple rocket launcher is an inexpensive type of rocket artillery that can deliver explosives to a target quicker than conventional artillery, but is less accurate.

Police were ordering patrols to rush to the Mohammed al-Qasim highway in eastern Baghdad in search of any suspicious vehicles spotted that may be carrying rocket launchers after they received a tip that the rocket had been fired from inside a truck, a police source told Reuters.

Police were now searching for suspects and the rocket launcher in the eastern district of New Baghdad, he said.

The U.S. embassy was not hit by the rocket, the police source added.

The embassy in Baghdad and the U.S. consulate in the Iraqi Kurdish regional capital Erbil evacuated non-emergency staff this week.

President Donald Trump’s administration has said it sent additional forces to the region to counter what it called credible threats from Iran against U.S. interests, including from militias it supports in Iraq.

Iran and the United States have both said they do not want war as tensions between them increase.

Katyusha rocket hits central Baghdad

A Katyusha rocket landed Sunday on the Green Zone, which houses foreign embassies in central Baghdad, Iraqi security services said in a statement.
The official security information cell said that "a Katyusha rocket fell amid the Green Zone without casualties," without further details.
A source in the Iraqi police told AFP that "preliminary information indicates that the missile was fired from a vacant yard in the area of Camp Rashid," in southern Baghdad.
The attack, which is not yet known, comes at a time of heightened tension in the region between Iran and the United States, which has recently evacuated non-essential staff from its embassy in the Green Zone.
US officials pointed out that the US move came against the backdrop of "threats" emanating from Iran and "Iraqi militias under the authority of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards."
Prior to that, Washington deployed an aircraft carrier and B-52 bombers in the Gulf, reinforcing the risk of losing control of the security situation in the region.
On 7 September 2018, three mortar shells landed inside the Green Zone without casualties or damage. It was not known who was responsible for this rare attack.
