Iraq Can Increase Oil Production If Needed: Minister

Iraq Can Increase Oil Production If Needed: Minister

ERBIL — Iraqi Oil Minister Thamer Ghadhban said on Thursday that his country could increase the oil production if needed to meet customers’ demand.

The minister said Iraq is able to bring its oil production to 6 million barrels per day (bpd), however, it remains committed to the OPEC output cuts for now, Reuters reported.

“Iraq will not increase its output unilaterally outside of OPEC and non-OPEC members’ agreement,” the minister was quoted. “[We] will monitor the markets to assess the needs at the next OPEC meeting.”

Ghadhban noted that they see no acute shortage in the oil market for the time being.

The statement came after US announced earlier this week that it will not extend a previous exemption for the seven buyers of Iranian oil.

It has vowed to lower Iran’s oil exports to “zero”, as a result of which other main oil producers will be needed to fill the gap with an increased production.

International Energy: Iraq to become the third largest oil producer in the world

BAGHDAD (Reuters) -
Iraq is moving in the right direction to produce nearly 6 million barrels of crude oil a day by 2030, making it the world's third largest oil producer, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in a study released on Thursday.
"Iraq's production in the next decade may increase by 1.3 million barrels per day to 5.9 million barrels per day," the report said.
"Iraq is one of the main pillars of the oil market in the years to come and will remain so," IATA chief Fatih Berool told AFP during a press conference in Baghdad.
"The optimism is due to the increase of Iraq's oil production by 50 percent since 2012, despite the decline in prices for years and the destruction caused by the invasion of the organization and the control and control of nearly a third of the country."
"That shows the resilience of the Iraqi oil industry," he said.
But the IAEA has acknowledged a range of obstacles that could hamper its expectations, including global oil market conditions, foreign investment in Iraq, political stability and the necessary water supplies needed to produce oil.
Iraq is currently the fifth largest oil producer in the world, and the second largest producer in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
