BAGHDAD 
(Reuters) - Ryan Dennis Rene, 22, of Richmond, Kentucky, died on Saturday in Iraq, the Pentagon said. 
"Riley died in Nineveh province in a non-combat incident," the Pentagon said in a report to Army Times. 
"He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 32nd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) outside Fort Campbell, Kentucky," he said. 
Lt. Col. Martin O'Donnell, spokesman for the 101st Airborne, said Sunday that Riley was a 13J fire fighting specialist in his first deployment in Iraq to support the inherent solution. 
Riley was recruited into service in October 2016. He was promoted to the rank of Specialist in October 2018 and arrived in Iraq in December, O'Donnell said. 
The incident is under investigation.
"We are deeply saddened by Ryan's death," said Colonel Derek Thompson, commander of the 101st Airborne Division in a statement. "We are deeply saddened by Ryan's death, our hearts are blowing at his family while we mourn together for the loss of our brother in arms, while we mourn this tragic loss. We will draw strength from his memory as his comrades continue to build The capabilities of the Iraqi army and the empowerment of defeat is calling. " 
Riley's awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, the World War on Terror Medal, the Korea Defense Service Medal, the Military Service Bar, the Foreign Service Bar, and the Combat Combat Mark.

The Department of Defense has identified a U.S. Army soldier who died over the weekend in Iraq as a man from Richmond.

Spc. Ryan Dennis Orin Riley, 22, died Saturday in the Ninawa province, according to the announcement Sunday. He was serving in the 2nd Battalion, 32nd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell.

Riley died in a “non-combat related incident” that is now under investigation, according to the Department of Defense.

Riley was a fire control specialist, according to 101st Airborne Division spokesperson Lt. Col. Martin L. O’Donnell. He arrived in Iraq in December for his first deployment, O’Donnell said.

Riley had been recognized with the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Korea Defense Service Medal, among others, O’Donnell said. He enlisted in October of 2016 and was promoted to the rank of specialist in October of 2018.

RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) - The Department of Defense says a soldier who died in Iraq Saturday is Spc. Ryan Dennis Orin Riley, 22, of Richmond, Kentucky.

Spc. Riley was a fire control specialist (13J) assigned to 2nd Battalion, 32nd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

The DOD says Spc. Riley was deployed to Iraq in December. He was serving in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. He died Saturday in Ninawa Province, Iraq, in what the DOD describes as a "non-combat related accident".

His death remains under investigation.

"We are deeply saddened by Ryan's passing. Our hearts go out to his family as together we mourn the loss of our brother-in-arms", said Col Derek Thomson, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) commander. "As we grieve this tragic loss, we will also draw strength from his memory as his mates continue to build the capacity of the Iraqi Army and enable the defeat of ISIS."

Spc. Riley enlisted in October 2016. He was promoted to specialist in October 2018.

According to the 101st Airborn Division (Air Assault) spokesperon, Spc. Riley was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Korea Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon and the Combat Action Badge.
