Kuwait Supports a "Unified Iraq": Top Lawmaker

ERBIL - Kuwait will back a secure and unified Iraq, Marzouq al-Ghanim, the speaker of the Kuwaiti National Assembly, said on Saturday, hours after Baghdad's appeal to neighbors to help Iraq in reconstructing the country.

Earlier the day, Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbusi delivered a speech at the beginning of a summit in Baghdad to bring parliaments of Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey, Jordan, and Kuwait together.

"For our part in Kuwait, we say, without ambiguity and with clarity: we are with a stable, secure and unified Iraq," Ghanim was quoted by KUNA, as cited by Iraqi News.

The discussions "give hope to the region’s people, Iraqis in specific, that entering an age of peace and stability is possible, and that regional fighting and tensions are not an inevitable fate as some tend to portray," he continued.

However, from a strategic point of view, Ghanim pointed out, Kuwait would support a "prosperous and developed Iraq".

The Islamic State (IS) attacked Iraq in 2014 and overran a vast area in the country. The insurgents were active in most parts of the country for three years.

The parliamentary summit was attended by the heads of parliaments of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan, Syria and Turkey, and an Iranian parliamentary delegation.

This is the first meeting of its kind. Iraqi President Barham Salih said in a speech that the convening of the conference of parliaments of the neighboring countries in Baghdad is evidence that stability is a common regional interest. "Iraq is no longer concerned about the idea of axes and bias," he said. "Today, we are building strategic partnerships with all neighboring countries without any embarrassment or favoritism." What binds us to our neighbors is destiny. Common geography, common interests, and strong social and religious cohesion. " He expressed his satisfaction with the development of Iraq's relations with all its neighbors at different levels.

For his part, Hassan Turan, a member of the Iraqi parliament for the Turkmen component, told Asharq Al-Awsat that "the success of Iraq in bringing together countries with great differences is in fact a victory for Iraqi diplomacy." "The striking paradox is that, despite the successes that Iraq has achieved externally, there is a clear failure in the domestic arena is the inability to build a common vision to complete the completion of the government cab.

In turn, the former MP and the head of the "correction" party, Kamel al-Dulaimi, said in a statement to Asharq Al-Awsat that "the summit is a bold and distinctive step in the region which is witnessing conflicts and political and media escalation, underlining the accusations of some of these countries, The past years have been a state of political confusion. " "The return of Iraq through this summit of the heads of parliaments of neighboring countries confirms that the need is common between Iraq on the one hand and these countries on the other to a new level of dialogue at the level of parliaments and parliamentary assemblies may lead to future conferences and meetings at official diplomatic levels, which means That the step taken by Iraq today is the basis for future steps that benefits the countries of the region and its peoples, which suffered greatly from the conflicts during the past decades ».
