MAYBE, they've finally realized that having secure, prosperous Iraq as a stable buffer zone, is a good idea.  MAYBE they will support Iraq in becoming a serious member of the Arab world, instead of just a playground for the worst elements of their biases against each other.

With all of this "stability" going around, MAYBE the powers-that-be will push Iraq into getting their act together and pump up their international participation ( RI/RV ).

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Saturday was host to a regional conference which included delegations from rivals Iran and Saudi Arabia among other neighboring states.

Iraq hosted the one-day conference where senior parliamentary officials from the regional countries Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Kuwait, Syria, and Jordan discussed security in the Middle East, diplomacy, and economic issues, Reuters reported.

The conference is an attempt by Iraq to bolster its relations with the states around it and act as a mediator between rivaling countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran who support opposing sides in ongoing wars across the Middle East.

Iraq’s Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi chaired the meeting. Halbousi said in a statement that the delegations reassured their support for the reconstruction and development of Iraq following the years-long war against the so-called Islamic State.

“What binds us to our neighbors is our common geographical destiny and common interests,” he said in the statement.

Iraq’s Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi recently visited both Iran and Saudi Arabia where he met with senior officials in both countries to discuss bilateral ties and further strengthen Baghdad’s relationship with its neighbors.

In Saudi Arabia, Abdul-Mahdi met King Salmanand Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The trip was his first official visit to Riyadh since he became Iraqi prime minister six months ago.

Ten days earlier, Abdul-Mahdi was in Tehran where he sat with both Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and the country’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

The Iraqi prime minister has repeatedly said his country wants to ensure it maintains strong relations with its neighbors as well as its allies abroad, namely the United States.

Iraq hosts regional rivals Iran and Saudi Arabia at conference

Iraq hosted senior parliamentary officials from arch-rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran on Saturday as Prime Minister Adil Abd al-Mahdi sought to bolster his country’s nascent role as a mediator in the region.

Delegations including the heads of parliament from Turkey, Kuwait, Syria and Jordan also attended the one-day conference in the Iraqi capital to discuss regional security, diplomacy and economic issues.

Abd al-Mahdi recently returned from visits to Iran and Saudi Arabia, both oil-super-powers that have long been vying for dominance in the Middle East. It is unusual for Saudi and Iranian officials to attend the same events.

The Iraqi premier has said Iraq will maintain strong ties with Iran, but also with Washington and regional neighbors, many of which, like Saudi Arabia, consider Tehran a foe.

That message was echoed on Saturday by parliament speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi, who chaired the gathering in Baghdad.

“What binds us to our neighbors is our common geographical destiny and common interests,” he said in a statement.

The visiting officials pledged support for reconstruction and development efforts in Iraq and for the country’s continued stability following its victory over Islamic State, after three years of war, the statement said.

Abd al-Mahdi met King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during his visit to Riyadh, his first official trip to the kingdom since taking office six months ago.

Iraq and Saudi Arabia have been at loggerheads since the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990, but they have recently undertaken a diplomatic push to improve ties.

Abdul Mahdi’s visit to Riyadh came 10 days after he visited Iran. During his trip to Tehran, he met President Hassan Rouhani and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Many of Iraq’s leaders, from its Shiite majority, have close ties with Iran, the main Shiite power in the Middle East.

President Barham Salih said on Saturday that the summit of parliaments of neighboring countries in Baghdad is an indication that the stability of Iraq is a common regional interest.

Salih called for Iraq to be the basis of a regional system based on common security and economic integration.

"With this summit, we are winning together to counter extremism and violence," he said. "Our people deserve sustained cooperation and coordination among our nations to secure peace and a decent life."
