Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abd al-Mahdi met with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, his office said on Thursday, a day after his first official visit to the kingdom which has been wooing Baghdad to stem the influence of Tehran.

Abd al-Mahdi's meeting with the crown prince came after he met King Salman on Wednesday. His office said the leaders signed 13 agreements in areas such as trade, energy and political cooperation, without giving further details.

The premier has said Iraq would maintain strong ties with Iran, but also with the United States and regional neighbors, many of which, like Saudi Arabia, consider Tehran a foe.

Abd al-Mahdi went to Riyadh with a large delegation including officials and businessmen, with trade billed as a prime focus of the discussions between OPEC's two largest oil producers.

The countries had historically been at loggerheads since the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990 but have recently undertaken a diplomatic push to improve ties.

Earlier this month, Saudi Arabia reopened a consulate in Baghdad which had been closed for 30 years. King Salman also announced his country would provide Iraq $1 billon to build sport facilities, an announcement which kicked of a two-day visit to Iraq by high-level Saudi officials.

During his visit to Tehran, Abd al-Mahdi met with President Hassan Rouhani and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Many of Iraq's leaders, from its Shi'ite majority, have close ties with Iran, the main Shi'ite power in the Middle East.

Support: Iraq is able to play a bigger role in the Middle East beyond Saudi Arabia and Iran
[Baghdad: Al Furat News} Rep. Of the Alliance for Reform and Reconstruction Hassan Fadas, Iraq is able to play a greater role in the Middle East beyond Saudi Arabia and Iran.

"All countries in the world depend on the employment of graduates and professionals in the fields of industry, agriculture and tourism, and the recent agreements with countries will encourage national products and create an atmosphere of competition between products," he said.
"One of the most important things that Iraq is supposed to undertake during the 16 years is its openness to countries, which is very late for openness because it leads to security and economic stability."
The support of "the friendly day by the Iraqi delegations and the mere observation of the composition of the Iraqi delegation to Saudi Arabia is a clear message to the openness of Iraq to the Arabs and there is a possibility to play an important role in bringing the views not only at the level of Saudi Arabia and Iran, but on the Middle East."

Riyadh, Baghdad to cooperate on security, intelligence matters: Saudi media

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Saudi Arabia and Iraq have agreed to cooperate on security and intelligence matters, Saudi state television, Al-Arabiya, reported on Wednesday citing Iraqi Foreign Minister, Mohammed Ali al-Hakim, as saying.

The Saudi news outlet also reported that the country’s state-owned oil giant Aramco would help Iraqi federal government to explore the western desert of the country for gas, citing Iraqi Oil Minister Thamer Ghadhban.

The agreements between the two countries came one day after a high-level Iraqi delegation, headed by Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi, arrived in Riyadh on Wednesday and met with the Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz.

Abdul-Mahdi also met with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, on Thursday.

Trade and economic relations had been the prime subjects of the meetings between the top Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) oil producers.

The two countries signed 13 agreements in areas of trade, energy, and political cooperation, according to Abdul-Mahdi’s press office.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries broke down in 1990 following Baghdad’s brazen invasion of Kuwait. The resumption of formal ties between Saudi Arabia and Iraq dates back to 2015 when Riyadh reopened its embassy in Baghdad, which had been shuttered for decades.

In June 2017, Iraq and Saudi Arabia agreed to set up a coordination council in efforts to further cement ties as the latter seeks to counteract Iranian influence in the former.

Baghdad has long claimed it seeks good relations with all countries, but Tehran’s sway over internal politics has been most palpable with its direct support for senior politicians and militias.

Abdul-Mahdi recently visited Tehran and met with President Hassan Rouhani and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Earlier this month, Saudi Arabia reopened a consulate in Baghdad to issue visas to Iraqi citizens. King Salman also said his country would provide Iraq $1 billion to build sports facilities, an announcement which kicked off a two-day visit to Iraq by high-level Saudi officials.
