BAGHDAD - A
spokesman for the Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives: "The Council considers that the draft amendments to the Iraqi Nationality Law No. 26 of 2006 is rejected in its current form," and the spokesman Shaker Hamid, "The political forces in the House of Representatives support the vote in the coming days; For the purpose of returning him to the government, and study it again. "
Last week, the Iraqi parliament passed a bill to amend the Nationality Law. It angered many Iraqis, who saw it as a new "catastrophe" for their country, which suffered greatly from the scourge of war and corruption, especially as it would strengthen Iranian influence in the country.
The Iraqi Council of Representatives on Monday approved the first reading of the amendment to the Nationality Law, allowing any foreigner who has spent one year in Iraq to obtain the nationality of the country.
Supporters of the amendment say it helps those who suffered forced displacement under the former Iraqi regime before 2003.
Iraqi politicians and activists viewed the law as a new twist to tampering with Iraq's security and capabilities, creating further social division and demographic change to end the Iraqi people's existence and replace it with races from Iran and Afghanistan And other nationalities.
MP Mohammed Iqbal al-Sidli, one of the most prominent opponents of the amendments, where he strongly criticized the paragraphs included in the amendment of the Iraqi Nationality Law, considering that "a major setback" in the course of Iraqi laws, which preserves the stability of the country.
In a statement issued by his media office on March 14, 2019, Iqbal said that the provisions contained in the amendment to the law made it easier to grant Iraqi citizenship away from the points that the Iraqi legislator had taken care of over the past years to preserve its status, likely to result in significant demographic changes. Unintentionally or sometimes deliberate.
For his part, the head of the National Bloc in the Iraqi parliament, Ammar Tohma, the draft amendment to the Nationality Law an attempt to make a demographic change, and open the space and opportunity to grant unknown persons Iraqi nationality.
Faced with these criticisms, the Directorate of Civil Status and Passports of the Ministry of the Interior of Iraq to issue an explanatory statement on some paragraphs of the law.
The Directorate said that the law in 2006 is still in effect, as those who wish to become unmarried are required to stay for ten consecutive years.
With regard to the granting of citizenship to the resident for a year, the Directorate said that "an exception was added to the displaced (forced) forced during the former regime and have transactions in the Directorate of Nationality was not completed because of their deportation."

Finally, it seems that the parliamentary security and defense committee was convinced that the Iraqi nationality law should be amended and passed before the House of Representatives after modifying and canceling some of the controversial clauses, most notably the duration of residency in Iraq.

According to MP Abbas Srout, in statements to him, Tuesday 19 March 2019, the most prominent points are the granting of citizenship to non-Iraqis after their stay for one year, the granting of citizenship to the husband of Iraqi women after a short period of marriage, in addition to other paragraphs.

Arrout said that the objections came as a result of Iraq's unstable situation, as well as the presence of many foreign labor is difficult to grant them citizenship now, because this requires considerable effort in auditing information and administrative procedures.

He also stressed that the security situation is also turbulent in all countries of the world, which allows the penetration of elements advocating Iraq through obtaining citizenship, and thus affect the security and economic situation of the country.

And continue to object to the law of nationality from a number of deputies to the political blocs; because some paragraphs allow access to Iraqi nationality easily.

The Civil Status, Passport and Residence Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior was forced to issue an explanatory statement stressing that the Iraqi Nationality Law No. (26) for the year 2006 is still valid and that those who wish to become unmarried are required to reside for 10 consecutive years in accordance with paragraph (c) (6 / I) of the law.
