Sen. Cory Booker Plans for Government to Give $46,215 to All 18-Year-Olds in ‘Lowest Income Bracket’

CNSNews.com Staff | February 20, 2019

Sen. Cory Booker is proposing a plan—the American Opportunity Accounts Act—that he calculates will provide $46,215 to every 18-year-old in the lowest income bracket by giving them annual subsidies in a federally managed saving account.

Booker cited his plan in a Tweet he sent out this morning.

“We must close the wealth gap that’s undermining equal opportunity in our country,” Booker said in his Tweet. “My baby bonds will help level the playing field by creating a savings account for every U.S. child—to invest in themselves through things like paying for higher education.”

Booker’s Tweet retweeted an article Tweeted by prosperitynow.org. The article was headlined: “Cory Booker’s America Opportunity Accounts Act is a Bold Step Towards Wealth Equality.”

bookertw1_1.jpg?itok=RpS-9QMJ

“Today, with the announcement of the American Opportunity Accounts Act, we’re excited to see Senator Cory Booker (D.-N.J.) take a concrete step to help level the wealth-building playing field and ensure that all children—especially those who come from low- and moderate-income families—have a fair shot to reach financial security and prosperity,” said the article.

It linked to an article at Vox, entitled: “An exclusive look at Cory Booker’s plan to fight wealth inequality: give poor kids money.”

“America has a massive, growing racial wealth gap,” Vox said. “The median white family today holds nearly 10 times the wealth of the median black family.

“Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.),” Vox continued, “is introducing a bill aimed at closing that gap. His idea is to give low-income kids a sizable nest egg (nearly $50,000 in some cases) that they could use for wealth-building purchases, like a down payment on a house or college tuition.”

“It would be a dramatic change in our country to have low-income people break out of generational poverty,” Booker told Vox. “We could rapidly bring security into those families’ lives, and that is really exciting to me.”

Vox explained how Booker’s plan would work:

“His American Opportunity Accounts Act would give each child born in the United States a savings account with $1,000. Each year, until the child turns 18, the government would deposit as much as $2,000 into that account. The size of the annual payment would depend on the child’s family income, with lower-income families receiving larger checks. …

“Booker’s office estimates that a child who remains in the lowest income bracket of the program (meaning she gets the largest, $2,000 payment each year) would accrue $46,215 by her 18th birthday. A child in the highest income bracket of the program (above 500 percent of the poverty line, or $147,100 for a family of four) would end up with $1,681—just the original $1,000 payment plus earnings accured from the government investing it in low-risk funds.”

“Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country”. John F Kennedy.

It seems people in politics these these days only ask, “What’s your price to get me elected, just let me know and I’ll give it to you”

At least in a speech, suckers.

Unlike President Trump, who has kept all his campaign promises.

Asking this question shows that you don't know what either are. So to put it in the simplest of terms,

Socialism is Communism without the guns. Which is why Socialist ALWAYS  want to take away our guns, because

Communism is the end goal of all Socialist.

Also you recently stated that Switzerland was a Socialist nation. I've been looking into this and you are wrong.

Switzerland is a Capitalistic Nation with strong socialistic programs. It is not what the Democratic Socialist of America

are attempting to create here.

Agreed on that....Switzerland is not socialist....It couldn't be as it is still ( less than the way it used to in the past but still...) the main vault of Europe and the whole world ( along with Luxembourg, Panama and many Caribbean islands...Once Austria too but I don't know now)....

In recent years Switzerland put in place several laws as other Countries had complained  their ( Swiss) system was helping tax evasion a great deal on a worldwide level ( among  many folks from lots of Countries ...also African Presidents / Dictators, etc)

The Nazi started that , hiding there many / most riches they had robbed to Jews...That was one of the fortunes of Switzerland  along w the fact it was never involved in a war for the last 100 / 150 years

Kamala Harris’ Father Turns on Her: ‘We Wish To Categorically Dissociate Ourselves from This Travesty’ – Report

Sen. Kamala Harris

The father of Democratic presidential hopeful Kamala Harris said he wanted to “dissociate” himself from his daughter’s “fraudulent stereotype” of attributing her support for smoking pot to her Jamaican heritage.

Last week, on New York’s “The Breakfast Club” radio program, Harris denied opposing the legalization of recreational marijuana use. “That’s not true,” she told co-host Charlamagne Tha God.

“And look, I joke about it — half joking — half my family is from Jamaica. Are you kidding me?” the former prosecutor added.

Harris’ father, Stanford University economics professor emeritus Donald Harris, responded in a statement to Jamaica Global Online, arguing his daughter is trafficking in “identity politics.”

“My dear departed grandmothers (whose extraordinary legacy I described in a recent essay on this website), as well as my deceased parents, must be turning in their grave right now to see their family’s name, reputation and proud Jamaican identity being connected, in any way, jokingly or not with the fraudulent stereotype of a pot-smoking joy seeker and in the pursuit of identity politics,”

the professor wrote.

“Speaking for myself and my immediate Jamaican family, we wish to categorically dissociate ourselves from this travesty,”

he added.

The Daily Mail reported that Donald Harris has lived in the U.S. since 1960, but has maintained close ties to Jamaica, serving as an economic adviser to at least two of its prime ministers.

He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, where he met and married Kamala Harris’ mother, Shyamala Gopalan, in the early 1960s. Gopalan emigrated to the U.S. from India.

The couple had Kamala in 1964 and divorced seven years later.

Jamaica Global reported, “(Kamala) Harris tends to downplay her Jamaican heritage when it suits her, crediting her Tamil Indian mother with the most significant influence on her life and outlook and rarely talks about her father’s influence.

“Her father Donald, hardly ever gets credit except when mentioned alongside her mother, but rarely as an individual.”

Harris appeared to be caught in an impossibility during her “Breakfast Club” interview when she claimed to have smoked marijuana in college while listening to music rappers Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur.

Asked if she ever smoked pot, the candidate answered, “I have. And I inhaled. I did inhale. It was a long time ago,” then revealing it was in college.

Harris deflected when asked if she would use now if marijuana was made legal nationally. “I think that it gives a lot of people joy, and we need more joy,” the senator said.

Shortly thereafter, Charlamagne tha God asked, “What were you listening to when you was high? What was on? What song was on?”

Before she answered, co-host DJ Envy (Raashaun Casey) wondered if it was rapper Snoop Dogg.

“Oh yeah, definitely Snoop,” Harris said. “Tupac, for sure.”

Harris graduated from Howard University in 1986 and from law school by 1989.

However, Snoop Dogg’s debut album “Doggystyle” was released in 1993, and Tupac’s first album, “2Pacalypse Now” came out in 1991.

In other words, neither work would have been available when Harris was either a college or law school student.

When the albums did come out, Harris was a deputy district attorney in Alameda County, California, where marijuana use was illegal at the time.

Marijuana Moment is a wire service assembled by Tom Angell, a marijuana legalization activist and journalist covering marijuana reform nationwide. The views expressed by Angell or Marijuana Moment are neither endorsed by the Globe nor do they reflect the Globe’s views on any subject area.

President Trump said during his 2016 election campaign that he supports the right of states to legalize marijuana and that he personally supports medical cannabis. But in signing a federal spending bill into law on Friday that contains a rider preventing the Justice Department from interfering in state medical marijuana laws, the president went out of his way to make clear that he reserves the right to ignore the cannabis provision.

“Division C, section 537, provides that the Department of Justice may not use any funds to prevent implementation of medical marijuana laws by various States and territories,” he said in a signing statement. “I will treat this provision consistent with the President’s constitutional responsibility to faithfully execute the laws of the United States.”

While the passage is a bit hard to parse on its own, here’s what you need to kno

Presidents typically use signing statements to flag provisions of laws they are enacting which they believe could impede on their executive authorities. By calling out the medical cannabis rider, Trump is making clear that his administration reserves the right to broadly enforce federal drug laws against people complying with state medical marijuana laws even though Congress just told him not to.

That being said, it does not mean that a crackdown is on the way, and this isn’t the first time Trump has singled out the marijuana rider, which has been part of annual federal spending legislation since 2014.

In May 2017, when signing that fiscal year’s appropriations bill into law, he included a very similar proviso in his signing statement.

“Division B, section 537 provides that the Department of Justice may not use any funds to prevent implementation of medical marijuana laws by various States and territories,” he wrote at the time. “I will treat this provision consistently with my constitutional responsibility to take care that the laws be faithfully executed.”

But no raids against state-legal medical marijuana patients or providers followed, not even under ardently anti-cannabis then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Now, as Trump signs the new statement, he has a new attorney general, William Barr, who pledged during his confirmation hearing and in writing that he would not “go after” marijuana businesses operating under state laws, medical, or otherwise.

The president’s new signing statement also calls out other sections of the large-scale annual funding bill, such as one requiring advance notice to Congress when carrying out certain military actions as well as provisions on recognizing foreign governments, receiving ambassadors, and transferring Guantanamo detainees to the United States, among several other issues.

Trump issued no such statement singling out provisions of any kind when he signed the 2018 spending bill into law.

I have told you before that I think all drugs should not be regulated by the Feds, States however, now that is a different story.

Also if someone commits a crime while under the influence of any drug the punishment should be EXTREME.

Government has no right telling people what they can ingest into their bodies. And when it comes to Pot, I personally know someone

that was dying with cancer and it was only Pot that eased his pain. So it does have its purpose.

In the 1920's and 30's ( probably even in the 40's) the consumption of cocaine was perfectly legal in most western Countries

Not stating that was a good thing.....

Point is that laws change with the passing of time...Either in a stricter   or more lax way......Depending on a lot of factors ( Politics, awareness of issues  health-wise with that specific product etc.)

Like LGD about legalization,  all drugs should be legal, regulated and taxed. We need to stop wasting money for The War on Drugs which has been a complete failure. People are going to buy drugs. There is no stopping that. So we need to take the money away from the drug lords and street gangs... JMHO

Probably so....

I don't know why some / many folks make a distinction in their mind between  "regular" drugs ( banned) and the allowed ones  ( alcohol, cigarettes...)

Does that benefit some maybe?????
