Angry protesters have set fire to car tires near the local government building in Basra, a source said, as part of the wide protests that have been flaring in the province for nearly six months.

The demonstrators renewed their previous demands including punishing corrupt officials, provide jobs, and improve services in the province, the source added.

Iraq’s second city has been rocked by demonstrations, which first erupted in July over poor government services but intensified in September before dwindling in recent months.

Residents in Basra say they have been driven onto the streets by corruption and misrule that have allowed infrastructure to collapse, leaving no power or safe drinking water.

In December, security forces used live bullets and tear gas to disperse Basra protestors, but no injuries were reported. Around 250 people had surrounded a building used as temporary headquarters for the provincial council.
