Will start in January next .. Iran goal of "Arab NATO"

Will be held in accordance with a security, economic and political agreement of 9 countries

Will be launched next January .. Iran goal of "Arab NATO"

The Arab world is looking forward to the formation of a military alliance called "Arab NATO" along the lines of the international alliance known as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which is expected to launch during a summit hosted by the United States of America in January.

Deputy Secretary of State for Arab Gulf Affairs, Tim Linderking, revealed the new features of the new Arab alliance and its long-term goals, indicating that it will include the GCC countries (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain) Qatar and Oman), as well as the United States of America, Egypt and Jordan.

The official said that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will host a meeting of the GCC + 2 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly to prepare for the upcoming January summit.

"The idea of the alliance stems from the Riyadh Summit of 2017, where it was agreed with the United States and the Gulf Cooperation Council to meet annually, and in addition there was strong interest from both sides in the formation of the Middle East strategic alliance."

He revealed that "the alliance will be based on a security, economic and political agreement linking the GCC countries, the United States, Egypt and Jordan."

The concept of the Middle East Strategic Alliance was "to build a strong shield against threats in the Gulf, especially Iran, cyber attacks, infrastructure attacks and coordination of conflict management efforts from Syria to Yemen as part of its agenda," Landring said.

He considered that increased coordination of efforts leads to enhancing the effectiveness of stability, noting that Iran is the "first threat" to the list of the coalition.

He criticized Iran's role in Yemen and said: "Iran is getting away with actual killings. They are helping and inciting the Huthis to attack Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which is unacceptable to the United States. These are key allies, and their territorial integrity is the cornerstone of our policy. In the Gulf for decades. "

"It is our duty to raise the cost to Iran, and part of our own strategy is to confront the Iranians who are moving in the theater of operations," he said. This is impunity. "

Asked whether the countermeasures would include increasing the US naval presence near the Bab al-Mandab Strait and intercepting arms shipments, the US official said: "This is what we will see soon, and we will add to that to see what Iranians are already doing."

Lenderking denied the claim that the United States was shrinking its defense commitment following a report in the Wall Street Journal that it was withdrawing missile defense systems from Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan to counter threats from China and Russia in other regions. "It is not a retreat in commitment but a transfer of resources."

The US official expressed the hope that "the GCC countries will consider the priority of US relations before entering into problematic agreements with other countries," praising at the same time the improvement of Saudi-Iraqi relations, and the recent announcement that Germany and Saudi Arabia have restored their diplomatic relations in full , And considered it "wonderful".

Follow - up / Tomorrow 's Press: rejected Iran 's Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued on Friday, US Secretary of State 's remarks, Mike Pompeo, which he made during his visit to Cairo, during which he called to address " the Iranian regime."

Pompeo criticized former US President Barack Obama on Thursday during his speech at the American University in Cairo.

According to Reuters, the statements raised eyebrows in the United States and abroad, mainly because Trump himself is criticized for his vague plan announced last month to withdraw US troops from Syria.

Pompeo criticized what he called Obama's desire for "peace at all costs", which prompted him to conclude a nuclear deal in 2015, under which Iran agreed to limit its nuclear program in exchange for easing economic sanctions.

Trump withdrew from the deal this year and went on what his administration calls the policy of "exerting the strongest possible pressure" on Iran in an effort to force it to restrict its nuclear program and ballistic missile activities and to stop supporting forces fighting proxy wars in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Lebanon.

Pompeo demands Abdul Mahdi limit Iranian companies' activities in Iraq

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called on Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi to reduce the activities of Iranian companies operating in Iraq, a political source said.

The recent visit of Pompeo to Iraq focused on the economic sector and on how Iraq would commit to the US sanctions on Iran, according to the same source.

Pompeo expressed that the United States is worried that Iran may send funds to some parties and figures in Iraq who are loyal to Tehran, according to the source, in order to help the latter get rid of the siege.

Abdul Mahdi assured Pompeo that Iraq is working according to the country's interest, adding that everyone in Iraq is committed to the country's official stance, the source added.

Pompeo met leaders in Iraq’s capital and its semi-autonomous Kurdistan region on Wednesday, aiming to reassure them about Washington’s plans following President Donald Trump’s surprise announcement last month of abrupt withdrawal from Syria.

The unannounced visits to Baghdad and the Kurdish regional capital Erbil came on the second day of a Middle East tour also taking in Jordan, Egypt, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Oman.

The U.S. State Department said on Friday, that the United States plans to jointly host a global summit focused on the Middle East, particularly Iran, next month in Poland, Reuters reported.

The gathering will take place in Warsaw from Feb. 13 to Feb. 14, it said in a statement. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Fox News in an interview to air on Friday that the meeting would "focus on Middle East stability and peace and freedom and security here in this region, and that includes an important element of making sure that Iran is not a destabilizing influence."

Pompeo announces from Cairo the end of Obama's Middle East policies

US former President Barack Obama delivers a speech in the Grand Hall of Cairo University June 4, 2009

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused Barack Obama on Thursday of sowing chaos in the Middle East by failing to adequately confront Islamist militants in a blistering critique of the policies of President Donald Trump's predecessor.

Speaking in Cairo, where Obama gave a major speech in 2009 in the first year of his presidency, Republican Trump's chief diplomat took on Obama by arguing that the Democratic former president had in effect misread and abandoned the Middle East.

"We learned that when America retreats, chaos often follows. When we neglect our friends, resentment builds. And when we partner with our enemies, they advance," Pompeo said in a speech at the American University in Cairo in which he did not mention Obama by name but called him "another American" who gave a speech in the capital of the Arab world's most populous nation.

Pompeo is touring the region to try to explain US strategy after Trump's surprise announcement of an abrupt withdrawal of all 2,000 US troops from Syria, which rattled allies and shocked topUS officials.

Describing the United States as a "force for good" in the Middle East, Pompeo sought to reassure allies that Washington remained committed to the "complete dismantling" of the threat posed by the ISIS militant group despite Trump's decision to withdraw troops from Syria.

Pompeo also faulted what he called Obama's "desire for peace at any cost" that led him to strike the 2015 nuclear deal under which Iran agreed to curtail its nuclear weapons program in exchange for easing of international economic sanctions.

Trump this year abandoned that deal, pursuing instead what his administration has called a policy of "maximum pressure" on Iran to try to force it to limit its nuclear program, curtail its ballistic missile activities and cease supporting proxy forces in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Lebanon.

'SELF-INFLICTED AMERICAN SHAME'

"The good news is this: The age of self-inflicted American shame is over. And so are the policies that produced so much needless suffering. Now comes the real new beginning," Pompeo added.

In his June 2009 speech at Cairo University,Obama called for better mutual understanding between the Islamic world and the West and said both should do more to confront violent extremism. As a result, Republicans have long accused Obama of apologizing to the world forUS actions abroad, a point that Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney emphasized during his 2012 attempt to unseat Obama.

"Remember, it was here in this city that another American stood before you. He told you that radical Islamist terrorism does not stem from an ideology. He told you that 9/11 (the Sept. 11, 2001, al Qaeda attacks on the United States) led my country to abandon its ideals, particularly in the Middle East," Pompeo said.

"He told you that the United States and the Muslim world needed, quote, a new beginning, end of quote. The results of these misjudgments have been dire," Pompeo added. "In falsely seeing ourselves as a force for what ails the Middle East, we were timid in asserting ourselves when the time and our partners demanded it."

US to host Iran-focused world summit next month

Pompeo told Fox the international gathering would be held Feb. 13 to Feb. 14 in Poland
  • US President Donald Trump's top diplomat is visiting a number of Middle Eastern countries this week in an effort to shore up support in the region

WASHINGTON: The United States plans to host a global summit focused on the Middle East, particularly Iran, next month in Poland, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Fox News in an interview to air on Friday.
Pompeo told Fox the international gathering would be held Feb. 13 to Feb. 14 in Poland to "focus on Middle East stability and peace and freedom and security here in this region, and that includes an important element of making sure that Iran is not a destabilizing influence."
US President Donald Trump's top diplomat is visiting a number of Middle Eastern countries this week in an effort to shore up support in the region amid a number of ongoing fronts.
Pompeo, in the midst of his eight-day trip through the region, has said that the United States is "redoubling" its efforts to put pressure on Iran and sought to convince allies in the region that it was committed to fighting Daesh despite Trump's recent decision to pull US troops out of Syria.
Pompeo told Fox News the summit would include representatives from countries around the world to address Iran's regional influence as the Trump administration has sought to pressure Tehran.
Trump withdrew the United States from the 2015 Iran nuclear accord and moved to reimpose sanctions on Tehran, even as other partners in the deal, including China, France, Germany, Russia and the United Kingdom, have sought to maintain the deal.
In a shift earlier this week, the European Union moved to impose some sanctions on Iran.

Iran's Zarif calls Iran-focused summit in Poland a "desperate circus"

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif criticised Poland on Friday for jointly hosting a global summit with the United States focused on the Middle East, particularly Iran, calling it a "desperate anti-Iran circus".

Earlier on Friday Washington announced that the summit would be held in Warsaw from Feb. 13 to Feb. 14, and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the meeting would focus on stability and security in the Middle East, including on the "important element of making sure that Iran is not a destabilizing influence."
Writing on his Twitter account, Zarif said:

"Reminder to host/participants of anti-Iran conference: those who attended last US anti-Iran show are either dead, disgraced, or marginalized. And Iran is stronger than ever."

He went on to write that "while Iran saved Poles in WWII, it now hosts desperate anti-Iran circus."

Relations between Tehran and Washington are once more highly fraught following the decision in May by President Donald Trump to pull the US out of a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six major powers and to reimpose sanctions.

US seeks to conclude more oil deals with Iraq: The Economist

pompeo baghdad

Pompeo

Few days after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo wrapped up his visit to Iraq, the Economist newspaper revealed that the US sought after concluding more contracts and oil deals with Iraq.

During his recent visit to Baghdad, Pompeo stressed on Iraq's independence in the energy field. Pompeo's remarks were seen by Iraqi officials as a clear message to stop buying Iranian gas and start contracting with US oil companies to develop gas fields in the country, the Economist said in a report.

Key US energy companies, such as Chevron, are negotiating directly with the Iraqi Oil Ministry to get huge concession agreements, the report said. Moreover, Exxon Mobil is negotiating to establish deals to increase the volume of oil exports and build a major desalination plant.

The United States is not looking to grant more waivers for Iranian oil imports after the reimposition of US sanctions, the US special representative for Iran said on Saturday, underlining Washington’s push to choke off Tehran’s income.

“We are not looking to grant any waivers or exemptions to the import of Iranian crude,” Brian Hook told a industry conference in the United Arab Emirates capital Abu Dhabi.

Washington granted waivers to eight major buyers of Iranian oil - including China, India, Japan and South Korea - after restoring energy sanctions in November.

Pompeo: A united GCC is essential for planned MESA alliance

January 13, 2019 11:21

DUBAI: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Sunday that a rift between Qatar and its Arab Gulf neighbours had gone on for too long.
"We are all more powerful when we are working together and disputes are limited. When we have a common challenge, disputes between countries with shared objectives are never helpful," he said at a press conference in Qatar.

Pompeo also said that a united GCC is essential for the planned MESA alliance, and that the US has agreed with Qatar on a widening presence in the Udaid military base.

Pompeo visited Doha on Sunday and signed several agreements with Qatari officials.

The US Secretary of State was welcomed in Riyadh on Sunday evening by the Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel Al-Jubeir and the Saudi Ambassador to the US Prince Khalid bin Salman.

Countering Iran’s terror operations and proxy militia is one of President Donald Trump’s top priorities, said Pompeo in an interview with Saudi-owned Al Arabiya News Channel on Saturday.

“Countering Iran, the threat from the world’s largest state sponsor of terror – the Islamic Republic of Iran, is something President Trump has identified as one of his top priorities. We are determined to do that, we will do it with our partners in the Middle East. This is a mission for the world. It’s incredibly important and we are determined to do it,” Pompeo said during the UAE leg of his Middle East tour.

The secretary of state was previously in Manama, Cairo, Amman, Baghdad, and the Kurdish capital Erbil on a tour that is pushing Washington’s continuous support for the region in confronting Iran and extremist groups such as Daesh.

Pompeo also commented on the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was slain inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last year.

“President Trump made clear immediately in the aftermath of this murder that the relationship is broader and deeper and bigger than that,” Pompeo said. “We absolutely have expectations when things go wrong, when heinous acts have occurred, people need to be held accountable for this, but this relationship predated that and the relationship must go forward. We have to have a good relation with the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and this administration intends to do so”.

The US Secretary of State will also be travelling to Warsaw in February to attend a joint US-Poland hosted Iran-focused world summit.
