It is worth noting that Pompeo's visit this time carries with it signs of the reaffirmation of the defense and security agreements with Kuwait for military redeployment and the deployment of advanced missile batteries in the area closest to Iran and Iraq.

Pompeo: God May Have Sent Trump To Save Israel From Iran

Profile picture for user Tyler Durden
Fri, 03/22/2019 - 20:25

Is an apocalyptic war on Iran by the US and Israel coming, driven by American Evangelical "rapture" theology of end times prophecy? Pompeo's latest suggestion that God "raised Trump for such a time as this" doesn't bode well for the region, or at least for those who hope to avoid a WWIII scenario. Apparently, Pompeo truly believes that Trump was sent by God to save Israel, and that the Golan is to be the first US bestowed "gift" bringing the world closer to "end times" fulfillment.

While on his multi-country tour of the Middle East on Thursday, the US secretary of state responded to a question from the Christian Broadcast Network's Chris Mitchell during a press conference in Jerusalem, who asked, "could it be that President Trump right now has been sort of raised for such a time as this, just like Queen Esther, to help save the Jewish people from the Iranian menace?"

Pompeo%20western%20wall.jpg Pompeo and U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman touch the stones of the Western Wall in Jerusalem on Thursday, accompanies by Israeli PM Netanyahu, via Reuters.

Pompeo responded, "As a Christian, I certainly believe that's possible" in agreement with the bizarre question. Crucially, this came the same day Trump tweeted his intention for the US to formally recognize full Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. This after Syria previously warned Israel its continued unlawful occupation of the long disputed territory would lead to war.

Pompeo added that he's "confident that the Lord is at work here" in viewing firsthand the "remarkable history of the faith in this place and the work that our administration's done to make sure that this democracy in the Middle East, that this Jewish state, remains."

Pompeo was referencing in part the Trump administration's deeply controversial recognition of Jerusalem as the permanent capital of Israel last year, and related decision to relocate the US embassy from Tel Aviv.

Remarking on "the work that our administration's done to make sure that this democracy in the Middle East, that this Jewish state, remains," the secretary of state added: "I am confident that the Lord is at work here." — NBC

All of this makes the following a serious question: is the White House's Middle East policy being driven by some kind of Evangelical apocalyptic desire to usher in biblical prophecy?

After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability!

As explained in a prior backgrounder by Quartz:

Belief in the Rapture, also known as millenarianism or eschatology, has multiple variations, but the core view is that there will an apocalyptic war, Jesus will return, and true Christians will be “raptured” or ascend to heaven, with the rest of the earth’s inhabitants punished. Rapture believers are split about the order of events, but they are united in the belief that only Christians will be saved.

Preachers of this scenario include the recently-deceased Billy Graham, mega-church founder Pat Robertson (who says Trump is implementing “God’s plan“) and many lesser-known “end is nigh” prophets around the country.

And "rapture"-inspired preachers have been leading group studies at the White House for a while now, though it should be noted that it's not the first administration to host such preachers.

Quartz observes further:

In the Trump White House, a weekly bible study group calls its brand of faith “historical evangelicalism.” Biblical scholars say the group shares the “end of times” message of “Rapture” theologians in its statement of faith and founder Ralph Drollinger’s own published lessons.

But again addressing the original question of whether US policy is now being driven by "rapture theology" — we do have the Secretary of State in his own words not long prior to the Trump administration's taking the White House.

In 2015 he said at a church event,

"We will continue to fight these battles, it is a never ending struggle... until the Rapture."

In light of the nutso "Esther" quote, here's your daily reminder that Mike Pompeo, our SECRETARY OF STATE, said "We will continue to fight these battles, it is a never ending struggle... until the Rapture." In 2015.

As Pompeo is now in Lebanon on Friday, continuing his Middle East tour, he's already received a somewhat icy reception from President Michel Aoun and other Lebanese officials.

In his remarks in Beirut, Pompeo urged the Lebanese people to stand up to Hezbollah, the Iran-backed group he said was “committed to spreading destruction.”

%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B9%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%82-5-3

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Little debate has been waning over efforts to get US troops out of Iraq amid reports that efforts led by political parties close to Iran have failed to rally enough support for a parliamentary resolution to resolve the issue, Maliki, as well as Shiite leader Moqtada al-Sadr.

The crackdown has given the Front of Washington's friends in Baghdad an opportunity to be clear about its position, especially since it includes Iraqi President Barham Salih and Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, who supports the survival of US forces, albeit secretly, as well as Sunni and Kurdish groups.

Over the past few weeks, discussions on this issue have dominated the political climate in Iraq, prompting US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to hint at Washington's fear that the Iraqi parliament will take a supportive stance on efforts to get US troops out of the country.

But the information leaked from the scenes suggests that efforts by Iran's allies to legislate a law obliging the Iraqi government to ask foreign forces to leave the country are not enthusiastic about influential political parties.

In this context, informed sources say that the alliance "Al-Fath" parliamentary, led by Hadi Amiri, close to Iran, has not received clear promises from the main parliamentary blocs on supporting his efforts to enact a law to remove US forces from Iraq.

According to the sources, this project did not raise the interest of the coalition, "Sason," sponsored by Moqtada al-Sadr, nor the Sunni parliamentary parties, while the Kurdish parties were rejected categorically.

The Fath Alliance tried to convince the presidency of parliament to fix a clause on discussing the future of foreign military presence in Iraq, on the agenda of one of the meetings, but his efforts did not work.

The coalition abandoned the idea of legislating a new law in this regard, in favor of the adoption of a parliamentary resolution asking the government to discuss this file, but it ran into a new rejection.

It is remarkable that the coalition failed to convince the leader of a coalition of state law Nuri al-Maliki to support his parliamentary efforts, although Maliki personally built his political reputation to adopt, when he was prime minister, long negotiations with Washington led to the withdrawal of the United States from Iraq in 2011.

This atmosphere encouraged the Iraqi-friendly Iraqi parties to express their position, which underscores the need for the country to keep US troops currently.

Although Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi does not go into this file publicly, the indicators confirm his opposition to the legislation of any law against the foreign military presence in the country.

But the most obvious position came on the lips of President Barham Salih, who declared explicitly that "Iraq needs active assistance from Washington in the next phase," calling for postponement of the withdrawal of US troops from his country.

"Iraq is still struggling to recover from the legacy of 40 years of war and internal strife," Saleh said in a recent interview with the Washington Post. "One year has passed since Iraqi forces were able to recover the land that was under duress. Yet a city like Mosul Still suffering from destruction. "

The Iraqi president expressed his desire to "see the Americans active" in determining the fate of his country, "through investment, education and development assistance," stressing that Iraq needs to postpone the date of withdrawal of US troops. "The United States can help Iraq, and we appreciate its assistance," he concluded.

But the sources confirm that the Fath Alliance will not easily abandon its project on the removal of US troops from the country.

According to the Iraqi political map, most of the main parties are calculated to take a hostile stance against the United States, based on different calculations. While the Kurds are in close alliance with the United States, Iraqi Sunnis view the US military presence as a guarantor against any Shiite political upheaval. The US military can now be seen patrolling several areas of Anbar province, Iraq's most prominent Sunni stronghold, after it has been subjected to fierce hostility.

At the Shiite political level, Adel Abdul Mahdi is seen as an old friend of the West and the United States, but he avoids appearing to public opinion. While the leader of the al-Hakamah movement, Ammar al-Hakim, stresses that the US military presence file must be left to the government entirely, the stubborn Shiite leader Moqtada al-Sadr has for months abandoned his ascetic discourse against the United States as an "occupying state."

Observers believe that this is enough to ensure Iraqi political protection in the foreseeable future of the US military presence in the country, while Iran's allies look forward to any opportunity to move this file.

Washington Reaffirms support to Iraq to Ensure IS is Fully Defeated: Pompeo

Washington Reaffirms Support to Iraq to Ensure IS is Fully Defeated: Pompeo

ERBIL - US has reaffirmed its prolonged commitment to coordinate with Iraq to ensure the Islamic State (IS) is fully defeated, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Thursday.

The US senior official made the remarks during a meeting with the Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbusi in Washington where they had talks on bilateral relations between the sides, according to reports.

Pompeo "reiterated that the United States’ support for a strong, sovereign, and prosperous Iraq, as outlined in our bilateral Strategic Framework Agreement, as well as ongoing U.S. efforts to assist in meeting Iraq’s critical development needs," State Department spokesman Robert Palladino said in a statement, as cited by Turkish media Anadolu Agency.

Earlier in February, US President Donald Trump said that he would keep his country's forces in Iraq to watch over Iran, after which, ties between Baghdad and Washington began to strain to some extent.

The US forces in Iraq have played a significant role in training the Iraqi forces, including the Peshmerga fighters, during and after the war against the Islamic State.

However, certain Shi'ite factions, who are known to be close to Iran, have intensified their efforts to oust the US and other foreign troops from Iraq.

Bombay: Revolutionary Guards control 20 percent of Iraqi economy

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has confirmed that Iran's Revolutionary Guard controls 20 percent of the Iraqi economy, adding that his country will impose sanctions on the Revolutionary Guard after being classified as a terrorist.
He stressed that "the United Nations did a good job in Sweden to reach an agreement on Yemen, but Iran has prevented the Houthis from implementing the agreement," pointing out that "between 5 and 21 thousand fighters are still moving between Iraq and Iraq Syria and Turkey, "explaining that" most of the oil wealth in Syria is not under the control of the regime. "
The decision to classify the Iranian Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization came into effect on Monday.
US President Donald Trump also considered that "the Revolutionary Guard is the main instrument of government to guide and carry out its global terrorist campaign."

US diplomat hopes to visit President Trump to Arbil and Baghdad

US diplomat hopes to visit President Trump to Arbil and Baghdad

 arabic  04/21/2019 - 18:02 published in Iraq

BAGHDAD - US President Donald Trump has visited Baghdad and Erbil and accused Shi'ite factions of preventing the return of displaced people to their homes, especially in the Jorf al-Sakhr area of Iraq's Babel province, .

President Trump's visit to the base of Ayn al-Assad in Anbar late last year and his failure to meet any Iraqi official and not to visit Baghdad have sparked controversy in the country.

In an interview with the Tigris channel, owned by businessman and political politician Jamal Karbouli, Hood said Trump's visit was for Christmas and New Year celebrations, saying Baghdad was aware of the visit.

"We had hoped Trump would stay longer to visit Baghdad and Erbil to see what was happening on the ground," he said. "We hope to do so in the future."

Speaking on the interview, Hudd said the Iraqis' comments on Trump's visit to their country did not occur in any other country the president visited during the event.

Trump said during his meeting with US troops stationed in Anbar that Washington would monitor Iran via the base of Ain al-Assad, which the Americans spent "huge amounts of money."

Asked more than once whether Washington had already begun monitoring Iran from Iraqi territory, particularly military bases, Hudd said "no".

"The Americans have no base in Iraq but are based in Iraqi bases at the request of the federal government to advise the security forces to fight terrorism," he said.

The United States maintains more than 5,000 troops in Iraq deployed in several military bases, including Ain al-Assad, Qayara and elsewhere.

Asked about the role of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, Houd said the force spends $ 1 billion a year to support Hezbollah, Hezbollah, Iraqi and Houthi groups in Yemen and other organizations that "do not care about the interests of the people and have no respect for the sovereignty of these countries."

In the middle of this month, the United States listed the Revolutionary Guards on the list of foreign terrorist organizations, an unprecedented step condemned by Iran.

"We are clear, we want to contain the activities of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard," he said.

He repeated that Washington might put other Iraqi Shiite factions on the terrorism list if it continued to deal with the Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guards.

Shiite factions have helped Iraqi forces in the war to organize an advocate for the past few years. Most of these factions are under the umbrella of the popular crowd, most of whose factions owe allegiance to Iran.

But the US diplomat said that the work of the factions at the present time is different from what it was doing during the war during the war.

"They are extorting and imposing royalties and preventing people from returning to their homes," he said. "These factions are now engaged in economic activities."

The US diplomat pointed out that these activities are carried out by these factions "outside the control of the Iraqi security forces and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces (Adel Abdul Mahdi)."

Why do not these (IDPs) go back to their original homes? Why do not the Iraqi security forces stand up to the Hezbollah battalions that prevent them from returning to the cliff? "

The town of Jarf al-Sakhr, which is predominantly Sunni, is 60 km southwest of Baghdad on the banks of the Euphrates River. The area north of Babylon has seen battles and attacks between Iraqi forces and militants throughout the years following the fall of the former regime in 2003.

Houd accused Iran's Revolutionary Guards of using Iraqi territory to fire rockets without Baghdad's approval, saying that happened in Shankal (Sinjar) some time ago.

Pompeo in Baghdad on unannounced visit: Iraq govt source

BAGHDAD - US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo landed in Baghdad late Tuesday on an unannounced visit, an Iraqi government source told AFP, cancelling a trip to Germany amid escalating US-Iran tensions.

The source, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the high security nature of the visit, said Pompeo was set to meet Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdel-Mahdi.

The visit comes two days after the US announced it was dispatching an aircraft carrier strike group and bomber task force to the Middle East to send a "clear and unmistakeable" message to Iran.

National Security Advisor John Bolton said the deployment was in response to a "number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings," but did not elaborate.

"The United States is not seeking war with the Iranian regime, but we are fully prepared to respond to any attack, whether by proxy, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or regular Iranian forces," he said.

Pompeo had been en route to Germany but suddenly cancelled the trip due to "pressing issues," the State Department said, without elaborating where he was heading.

But in response to a question about threats from Iran or its proxies on US forces in Iraq, the top US diplomat mentioned both Iraq and Jordan.

"As Secretary of State I have a responsibility to keep the officers that work for me safe each and every day all around the world. That includes in Erbil and Baghdad, in our facilities in Amman, all around the Middle East," he said.

"And so any time we receive threat reporting, things that raise concerns, we do everything... that we can to make sure that those planned or contemplated attacks don't take place, and to make sure that we've got the right security posture," he said.

Pompeo had been traveling from Finland, where he had attended a meeting of the Arctic Council.
