Baghdad's main commercial district has witnessed bombings that exceeded the capacity of any of its inhabitants. During wars, death was almost daily, most of them horrendous.

For the first time in 15 years, Iraq is free of war or a weighty insurgency, and the defeat of a "hasty" organization in late 2017, after a devastating four-year war, gave Iraqis space and breathing space.

I have often wondered how much or what percentage of the barricades and associated military defensive structures installed in Baghdad inside and outside the Green Zone since the 2003 take down of Saddam Hussein are removed with full function and access restored.

 

To me, this is a necessary indication of Iraq, Baghdad especially, having transitioned from a war time to a peace time mode safe and conducive for foreign investment.

 

With the area in Syria North and East of the Euphrates River now fully retaken from ISIS, my gut feel is Baghdad being announced as fully cleared of the barricades and associated military defense structures would unleash a sense of euphoria related to future peace time prosperity in Iraq and internationally.

 

Baghdad likely had need of road repairs and upgrades prior to the 2003 Saddam Hussein take down so there may be a need to retain some barriers in place to allow for necessary road repairs, upgrades, utilities works, and major building construction or renovation to be completed whereas the associated military defensive structures and placards would be removed for aesthetic and post war time healing reasons.

 

There may some other known and unknown functional and psychological positive announcements that are necessary prior to foreign investment being turned on for reconstruction, construction, and economic development in Iraq. I suspect this is a necessary displacement of the Iraq-Iran agreements recently formulated to prevent further economic ties with Iran whereas the foreign investment needs to be started quickly to prevent investment in Iraq from Iran.

 

Cracks in a dam appear slowly over time where the increase in water flow through the cracks appears to be predictable over time to the point of imminent catastrophic collapse of the dam. With a few major pieces of Good News of late, I suspect the other Good News will occur quickly at a pace greater than the ability to be reported with the effect having actually occurred.

 

Alternately, my confidence may not be founded on actual elements pertaining to the developments in Iraq with a projected personally desired outcome.

An important tunnel in Baghdad has been closed since 2003

{Baghdad: Al-Furat News} Amanah Baghdad announced the immediate rehabilitation of the pedestrian tunnel connecting the areas of Abu Tayara and the mechanic district to open to citizens closed since 2003.

A statement by the secretariat received the agency {Euphrates News} a copy of it that "the staff of the Municipality Department of the session began to detect the site and lift the materials used in closing the tunnel to complete the maintenance of water lines, sewage and electricity and rehabilitation of the tunnel in full to open to citizens." 
He pointed out that "the action came in coordination and cooperation with the Baghdad Operations Command to reduce accidents and the dangers of those passing through the highway."

Station: Iraq opens the fortified area of Baghdad in full

 

Iraqi government source announced the opening of the Green Zone in full "soon", noting that the deadline will be before the end of this month.

"Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi will announce in the coming days the full opening of the Green Zone in front of the citizens," the source said, adding that it was "ready and waiting to announce the opening of the Green Zone."

It is noteworthy that US forces, closed the Green Zone after the invasion of Iraq in 2003 to be based, and currently includes most of the institutions of the Iraqi government, along with several embassies, the largest of which is the US Embassy.
