Iraq opens the "Green Zone" ... ending the isolation imposed by the US occupation since 2003

%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D9%86%D8%B7%D9%82%D8%

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi announced Tuesday the opening of the fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad, marking the end of the isolation of this area, which Americans seized after occupying Iraq in 2003, from several residential neighborhoods overlooking the Tigris River. As the seat of the occupying power and then of the Governments formed thereafter.

"The Green Zone was opened this morning," he said, adding that the number of streets opened was 10, as well as the lifting of 12 thousand cement blocks from the region. He pointed out that "the opening is permanent and round the clock in front of the movement of citizens."

The Iraqi government had announced earlier that it had prepared a plan to open the Green Zone completely, and remove the excesses through Baghdad International Airport to the main door of the airport, as well as lifting cement blocks from the district of Kadhimiya (north of Baghdad) and Sadr City (east of Baghdad) .

In the context of this, informed security sources said in an interview with "the new Arab" that "the checkpoints responsible for the protection of the Green Zone received instructions to facilitate the task of trucks and mechanisms that raise the large number of barriers that remain inside the area," noting at the same time, That "the security guard will increase at the roads leading to the important government offices, and a number of embassy headquarters and foreign missions and international organizations that operate from within the government area fortified."

The same sources confirmed that some former and current officials have stepped up guard posts around their residence inside the Green Zone, pointing out that some neighborhoods such as Karrada, Arasat, Jadriya, Palestine Street, Yarmouk, Harithiya and Mansour continue to suffer from the barriers of officials.

The lifting of 12 thousand cement block from the region (Getty) and the use of leaders in the militias "popular crowd" to persuade some armed factions to ease the protection measures around their headquarters in order to open a number of closed roads.

The name is an outsider

The Green Zone is an exotic name on the geography and history of Baghdad, three adjacent residential neighborhoods located in the heart of the capital and on the sides of Karkh and Rusafa on the Tigris River, cut off and surrounded by high concrete walls days after the US invasion. The historic palaces of Baghdad, whose rulers have been in place for centuries, have been in place since the Abbasids and the Ottoman Empire followed by the British occupation. General Frederick Stanley Maude, then ruler of Iraq, took the current Peace Palace after it was the seat of Ottoman ruler Medhat Pasha.
And then moved to the royal rule to be the palace of Al-Rehab currently located within the Green Zone, the seat of the ruling Hashemite family of Iraq before being overthrown by a military coup led by Abdel-Karim Kassem, which soon fell by another coup led by the Baath Party "Arab Socialist" to continue until the occupation of the country, The civil administrator Paul Bremer to settle in the Rehab Palace as the seat of his rule before ordering the trimming of adjacent areas and included in a single box called the Green Zone, in a name that reflects the rest of Iraq, which was covered by fire and smoke withdrawal from Basra to Anbar in the west.

Expulsion of the population

Most of the residents of the area, which contained buildings, shops and houses of Iraqi Christians, and the region was mostly known as Karada Mary in relation to the Virgin Mary peace be upon her. It was an important commercial center and had a large road network connecting the two sides of Baghdad with some as well as the suspension bridge, which the Baghdadi considered a symbol or a capital landmark, as in other capitals that boast of something in it.

The US forces evacuated citizens from homes and apartments and compensated them with monthly payments of $ 1,000 to rent others, as they became part of the US military governor of Iraq after the occupation. The number of these houses and apartments more than 3 thousand units expelled all of their families and did not give the option of rejection. The units later exploited the families of diplomats and US foreign officials, specifically, and quickly moved to parliamentarians, party heads, political blocs, ministers and key officials.

Area

The area is about 12 square kilometers, surrounded by three high concrete walls. The new area has been marked and opened with five doors each section dedicated to entering the category, for example the military door, parliamentarians from the door, members of the diplomatic mission of the door, members of the government from another door.

Monuments and palaces

The area includes eight presidential palaces, some of which date back centuries, some of which are not more than forty years old, notably the Al Rehab Palace, the Palace of Jerusalem, the Palace of Peace, the Presidential Palace, the Al-Sajda Palace and the End Palace, most of which are spread over the Tigris region.

The area also includes the Arc de Triomphe built from the helmets of Iranian soldiers after the end of the Iran-Iraq war. It includes Ibn Sina Hospital and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, along with family gardens, city, games and restrooms between nearby houses and apartments.

The heart of Baghdad is breathing open the streets of the Green Zone

%D8%A8%D8%BA%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%AF-300x220.j

BAGHDAD - The Green Zone, which has long been the symbol of Saddam Hussein's regime, has become a symbol of US occupation and has become the preserve of government officials to open its doors to all Iraqis, most of whom have been denied passage in the heart of Baghdad.

The public has not been able to enter the Green Zone for 16 years, until a few months ago the authorities issued a resolution allowing passage through its streets for limited hours each day. However, this area, which stretches much of it on the banks of the Tigris, returned from Tuesday, the first day of Eid al-Fitr to receive everyone and allowed to pass through its streets day and night.

"With the start of the Eid, the Green Zone will open 24 hours and additional gates will be opened, including the gate leading to the Ministry of Defense," Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi told a news conference on Sunday.

The Muslims of Iraq, like other Muslim countries, celebrate Eid al-Fitr from Tuesday.

Abu Majid, a 49-year-old taxi driver, speaking from his car amid a gorge over the Republican Bridge (center), welcomed the opening of the Green Zone, saying "the traffic will be better and the traffic will be better" on the streets.

"This is the joy of people," said the man, who has not set foot in the Green Zone for years with a smile, saying "because the crowds will be down in the streets of Baghdad."

Cultural complexes and complexes

This spot, which is divided by wide streets, does not know the hustle and spread on its sides beautiful green trees, many symbols for the Iraqis, especially for the vast capital Baghdad and inhabited by nearly eight million people.

In addition to alleviating the suffering of people from traffic jams, especially during the hot summer season, which lasts several months, the Green Zone has great meanings for this city, which was the capital of the Abbasid state and an important cultural center for years, before being hijacked by sectarian violence in the years following the invasion of Iraq.

Until the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, this 10-square-kilometer area, located in the heart of Baghdad, was the site of presidential palaces, the House of Representatives and other important headquarters.

Prior to the invasion, most of the Green Zone's homes were reserved for prominent officials and members of the Baath Party, which ruled the country for decades, with statues and stone arches similar to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. However, its streets were not forbidden to Iraqis.

However, after the entry of the occupation tanks to Baghdad in April 2003, this spot, which was taken from a holy shrine on one side, turned into a green area, unlike the rest of the city of Baghdad, which became a red zone due to deteriorating security and escalating violence.

It is not known what is going on in this fortress isolated completely because of the placement of cement barriers and barbed wire even on the Tigris River, after it was receiving Iraqi families, especially on the weekend to visit the beautiful monuments and cultural complexes.

Over the past few years, only a few Iraqis have been able to enter the region after undergoing a series of stringent security measures, including obtaining special cards.

Break the transcendental feeling

In the past years, the region has not been populated by government officials, politicians, political parties, Americans, Britons and foreigners. Their embassy is located in this highly-favored area, while the rest of Baghdad lives in the opposite reality.

Political analyst Ghaleb Shabandar said that the reopening of the streets of the Green Zone carries many meanings.

For his part, believes security analyst Fadel Abu Ragheef, saying that the re-opening of the Green Zone "bear local returns to win the people and break the psychological barriers caused by the presence of the Green Zone," adding, "At the international level is a confirmation that the security situation has become reassuring and investment companies can work In Iraq, and that Iraq has become a whole green area. "

"Is the Green Zone a miracle?" Said Abu Sadiq, 40, a day laborer in an electrical appliances shop in central Baghdad. "We have had 15 years (since the fall of Saddam Hussein) and they have not given us anything." "People need to address unemployment and improve services such as electricity, water, health and others," he said.

DELTA:  WE WERE WAITING FOR THIS...….THANK YOU SAMSON...….FINALLY MOVING FROM REGULAR K CARD...TO MASTER CARD...BOOOM...….HUGE...

Samson:

Stop issuing card "Key Card" and replace it with "Master Card Rafidain"

2019/6/4 14:20

KI has announced the suspension of the issuance of "Key Card" cards in the National Pension Authority, showing the replacement of MasterCard cards issued by Rafidain Bank.

The company said in a statement on Monday that RTT had suspended the issuance of "K-Card" cards on June 2, which was issued by the National Pension Authority.  He pointed out that the Rafidain Bank and the company "K" will issue cards "MasterCard" instead of it, noting that the cards "Key Card" issued in the past will be replaced by the new issue of cards, "Master Card Rafidain" within a timetable.

He assured card holders that the replacement will be carried out in a streamlined manner that will guarantee the rights of retirees and continue to receive their salaries normally, and there will be no interruption during the replacement process.   LINK

Popeye7:  Alrighty then!... Sunset in Baghdad will be at approximately 7:08 PM their time... End of Ramadan, and the beginning of Eid al-Fitr...

Lets see what is given to the citizens of Iraq during this 3 day period... Could it happen... As Frank declared last night through Walkingstick's guidance, testing is complete...

Thanks so much for the call, council, and clarity... Now lets make it a celebration... 4 C's... IMO... God bless, and have a great day...

PS... If we add the word complete that would add up to 5 C's... But is that being overly optimistic?... Maybe, Maybe not?... IMO, we shall see..

*************

2Cents:  We have always heard EOY/BOY or "middle of year" is the best time......It was reiterated again last night......On the CC, Frank stated WS asked "when do they come back?"........Frank answered 6/01...........Not sure why as we know they are to return 6/11 with no agenda set...........

IMO, so the question is "what constitutes 'middle of the year'?"...........Frank said 6/01.....???......from a calendar standpoint, i would have to answer 6/30-7/01........However, from a fiscal standpoint I would argue that it is anytime after the sixth month expenses are remitted and prior to the seventh month expenses start to be remitted......

We know that June payroll was completed yesterday and it is questionable whether any other amounts from the budget have been remitted for any month this year or if they need to be yet for June......

I would hypothesize that all June expenses were remitted as of yesterday......We saw that that on Sunday the COM voted to "amend the implementation of the 2019 budget"........

There were no further details.  Was this a vote to make sure all June expenses were remitted as of yesterday???  If so, are we now technically in a period that could be considered "middle of the year"?  .......   IMO   Just some thoughts......

Sunnysandy:  IMO, I 100% agree with your thoughts 2Cents!!!!!!!!!.

June 1st was the first day that the GOI could finish with the (what we call the PR program rate) and initiate/implement/announce (the back wall date of June 3rd) to pay their bills/responsibilities to the citizens and the world via agreements (in other terms, balance their ledger).

WOOOOO HOOOOO, lol! A beautiful plan with the FAB4)

They can now liquidate their citizens at and reveal their brand new fancy Higher Rate (for the EXACT reason you expressed) in the middle of the year fiscal calendar year.

Now, we see Frank with WS okay, express the opportunity to discuss dates and rates, in a limited form. Why? Because Iraq is showing us!!!! BOOM BABY!!!!!!

Look at the Kurds, Barzani invites President Saleh over for his swearing in. WOW! seems like a strong political move and unspoken understanding. Didn't we see the USA Government immediately congratulate Barzani on the election? Oh yeah, how convenient of the UN to step in and say their 2cents about Article 140. Hmmmm. All very convenient timing!!!!!

-Banks are hydrated (Globally)

-Iraq Stock Market will kick back on the 9th

-Mastercards are passed out

-Gazette has the Announcement

-Agreements from many Countries are INKED -- some are implemented at what rate (lol) and MORE are willing to be implemented at the new public rate

-Hecht, McDs is even playing in Global Currency now.... lol

There is so much more to list! Think new Middle East agreements, EU changes of less control in the ME, NATOs rebalancing of power and influence, the diminished control of the IMF in Iraq, the growth of the power in the AMF and on and on!!!!

We need Lobsters Happy Dance Song (right here)!

IMO, we can watch/see that this EID will become a very special one for the citizens! and then us

And including all this (that we see), so much has happened around the world showing closure (Iran, China, England, and many more countries) FINALITY to CELEBRATE at this point in the Monetary Reform......

Thank you, President Trump, our countries leadership team, and our Military.

Popeye7:  Terrific opinion But is it really an opinion, or a reality?...Great Job Guys

Re: 2Cents and SunnySandy Posts:

MilitiaMan:  The time line of 06/01 per Frank looks to be an off hand error. As 06/01 was passed when said. Looks as though 07/01 was what was meant.

The take away here is to me is that they look to have paid expenses already and your assessment of them being within the middle of the year is where they are and now since they paid expenses, it matters not on when in June they finish reforms.

Except they have constitutional time line from the 22nd - 23rd of May area on the FML amendment that brings more focus to before mid month or even sooner.

That puts us in the coming days as a very powerful time frame. They even today show they have new cards that are of international nature via Mastercard.

Said to not be a problem nor delay in payments. Something Delta and Teams were watching for. A good thing.

Add in post #155 by Sunny Sandy (Bravo) and there is ample evidence this is a rocking time frame! imo ~ MM

Frank26:  Hey FRANK 26 you said June 1 ..................but that date is already gone ..............you meant to say July 1 ............bozo ............ROTFL
