Iranian official calls for negotiations with Washington in Iraq

Large-scale protests erupted in several Iranian cities on Tuesday and continue to grow, in what Iranian activists describe as a continuation of a nationwide anti-government movement that began in late December.
The latest unrest broke out in the major cities of Isfahan, Karaj, Shiraz, Rasht and Tabriz. Many of the protesters initially took to the streets to express their outrage over the ongoing crisis caused by unemployment and currency devaluation, but the demonstrations quickly took on a political tone, with calls for the ouster of the Iranian government.
On Monday, the value of the Iranian rial fell to record lows, trading at a rate of more than 120,000 to the dollar. The protests, which began the following day, made it clear that the Iranian people place the blame for their economic hardships squarely on the mismanagement and corruption of the ruling regime.
“The enemy is here; they are lying when they say it is America,” protesters in Isfahan chanted, according to the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (MEK), which is credited with playing a leading role in the ongoing nationwide protests. There were no slogans targeting the Americans or the imminent return of US-led sanctions, which are due to be reimposed on Aug. 6.
The regime is bracing itself for the return of these economic sanctions, which were suspended in 2015 under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal. Their reintroduction comes after US President Donald Trump pulled out of the agreement in May. In addition, secondary sanctions on foreign entities that continue to do business in Iran will come back into effect in November, placing even greater pressure on the Iranian economy.
Washington has indicated that its goal is to cut off Iran’s oil exports entirely, and the mere threat of such assertive measures appears to be exacerbating a crisis in the Iranian economy that began even while the JCPOA was still in full effect.
The White House and Trump have issued statements expressing support for the protesters, whose slogans similarly emphasize that the conflict is between the Iranian government and its people. They taunted the country’s two political factions: “Reformists, hard-liners: The game is over.” This, along with equally provocative chants such as “Death to the Dictator,” leave little room for doubt that the string of protests, including those that broke out this week, are largely driven by a demand for regime change.

The current protests are a continuation of a nationwide anti-government movement that began in late December.

Dr. Majid Rafizadeh

The predictable crackdowns by the state began in early 2018. According to MEK, about 8,000 peaceful protesters were arrested, many of whom were threatened with death sentences. Fifty demonstrators were shot dead in the streets, and more than a dozen died while being tortured in the custody of Iranian authorities.
Similarly repressive efforts have, of course, emerged in the wake of subsequent protests, including those that broke out on Tuesday. But a number of video clips provided by MEK activists show the demonstrators pushing back against riot police and agents of the clerical regime. In some cases, this civilian resistance appears to have compelled government forces to retreat or withdraw.
In Isfahan and elsewhere, the government’s failure to disperse the protesters allowed the demonstrations to continue into a second day, at which point further clashes between activists and government authorities were reported.
Tuesday’s political protests coincided with the 11th consecutive day of a nationwide strike by Iranian truck drivers. A previous strike broke up following serious clashes with regime authorities, but the demonstrations resumed and gave rise to new clashes on July 23, before spreading to 130 locations in Iran.
Anti-government protests also resumed in Karaj for the third night. Demonstrators chanted “Down with the Dictator” and “Guns, tanks, get lost mullahs.” The security forces charged toward the protesters but they held firm. As the government forces retreated, and then fled, the demonstrators set fire to police motorbikes. Emboldened by their successful defiance of the police, the protesters began to chant, “Beware the day we take up arms.”
“As long as the dictator (Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei) stands,” they shouted, “the uprising will continue.” That sentiment was echoed by Iranian opposition leader Maryam Rajavi, who wrote: “The Iranian people’s nationwide uprising is growing by the day...threatening the mullahs’ religious dictatorship.”
“Today,” Rajavi wrote in her response on Twitter to the latest protests, “the world can see that the voice of Iranians cannot be silenced despite massive repression, and their uprisings are carrying on until victory.”
These protests are a continuation of a nationwide anti-government movement that began in late December. They are of a political and economic nature, and more than likely will continue to grow, potentially endangering the hold on power of the Iranian regime.

China has rejected the US administration's latest request to halt the import of Iranian oil within the framework of US sanctions against Tehran.

Officials in the US-China negotiations said Washington had failed to influence Beijing to reduce its import of Iranian oil.

Officials said the Trump administration had sent diplomats to the capitals of some countries to urge countries to stop importing Iranian oil, but their missions failed.

Saudi Oil Minister Khalid Al-Faleh said that oil shipments through the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait in the Red Sea will resume on Saturday.

Al-Falih said the decision was made after the coalition in Yemen "took all necessary security measures to reduce the risks on the ships of the coalition countries that pass through the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the southern Red Sea region."

Saudi Arabia said on July 26 that it would temporarily suspend cross-strait oil shipments in the wake of an attack by the Houthi group allied to Iran on two large Saudi oil carriers.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iranian protesters attacked a religious estate in the Karaj area near Tehran on Friday night, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Anti-Iranian protests in various parts of the country have erupted against the wave of high prices, unemployment, inflation, rising prices, deteriorating economy, the collapse of the local currency and difficult living conditions for citizens.

"Around 500 demonstrators attacked the school trying to break its doors and burn things," said Hajjat-e-Hindiyani, director of the estate in the town of Ijtihad.

"They arrived with stones and broke all the windows of the prayer hall shouting slogans against the regime," he said, adding that police dispersed the demonstrators and arrested some of them.

Foreign media are banned from covering "unlicensed" demonstrations.

The Iranian authorities have spoken to the protests in Isfahan, Shiraz, Mashhad and Tehran in protest against the economic situation and a broader state of anger at the political system.

Video recordings posted on social networks over the past few days showed people walking in the streets of several cities chanting "Death to the dictator" and other slogans.

But it is not possible to verify the authenticity or source of the recordings, which are published by opposition groups in exile accused by the authorities of receiving support from the United States, Israel and Saudi Arabia, while foreign media are banned from covering "unlicensed" demonstrations.

During earlier protests, conservative media have focused on attacking sensitive symbols such as religious buildings to defame protesters.

Look forward to the return of sanctions

Recent recordings of social networking sites suggest that last days' protests are much smaller and narrower than those in December and January, which included dozens of cities and towns, killing 25 people.

But the Iranians are anxiously watching what the economic consequences of a re-imposition of US sanctions will be from Tuesday after the United States withdraws from a nuclear deal in 2015 with major powers and promises sanctions with a "far-reaching" effect on Iran in two phases on August 7 and Nov. 5.

Iran Air announced on Saturday that it would receive five new aircraft from France's Italian airline ATR on Sunday before sanctions were reinstated.

Although smaller companies have said they will work to circumvent the sanctions, multinational groups like Total, Peugeot and Siemens have said they will have to pull out of the Iranian market.

The growing US hostility has weakened the Iranian riyal, which lost nearly two-thirds of its value in six months.

It is not yet clear how this will all affect the daily lives of the Iranians, but Western diplomacy in Tehran is following economic developments. He said basic food prices are already rising.

"We are already seeing a surge in car prices because of the fear of (import) shortages of raw materials. In November, when oil sales are affected, we will have a clear picture of how this affects daily life. "

She added that the collapse of the currency is not caused by purely economic factors, but because people are looking for a safe place to keep their savings because they do not trust the government's ability to improve conditions.

"There is a significant decline in confidence in the financial system and the ability of the government to control things and deal with sanctions," she told AFP.

Report: Khamenei will not prevent a secret meeting between Rouhani and Trump

FBF106BD-791F-47B9-BAD7-E7016EB20B20-620

In International - Reports  August 4, 2018  on the report: Khamenei will not prevent a secret meeting between Rohani and Trump closed  11 visits

Follow-up / SNG- The Middle East Media Center reported on Saturday that President Donald H. Trump was surprised by President George W. Bush's willingness to meet with Iranian President Hassan Rowhani without any preconditions and opposition. Secretly, while Iranian officials, whether conservatives or middlemen, are more inclined than US officials to implement Trump's call as soon as possible.

"The surprise that American President Donald Trump blew up during a joint press conference with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte about his willingness to meet Iranian President Hassan Rowhani without preconditions is not a precedent in the history of the swinging relations between the two countries," said SNG. The US and Iran, as President George HW Bush has translated his willingness to talk with the Iranian leadership, by telephoning the late President Hashemi Rafsanjani, and because of the immaturity of the idea on the Iranian side, or perhaps fear of the consequences, Rafsanjani did not hear ة " !

The report added that "as long as the Iranian leadership has been engaged in direct and public talks with the US side, but never failed to conduct it in secret, Mir Hossein Mousavi, leader of the Green Movement, which was more than nine years under house arrest, leaked in 1988, As head of the government, that he continued with the US leadership through five channels of diplomacy, and revealed that negotiating with the United States, was an adventure for the ruling wing in Iran, but at the same time was the subject of competition .

"The talks between the Americans and the Iranians took on a secret nature after the attack on the US embassy in Tehran and the detention of its employees hostage to the revolutionary student movement." In light of this incident, the leader of the revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini, decided to sever relations with the United States, but did not mind talks The President of the Republic at the time, Abulhasan Bani Sadr, wrote in his memoirs that Imam Khomeini sent Sheikh Sadiq Tabtabai to Germany to meet with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs

The report explains that "the late President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani is preparing and through all the positions that fluctuate, the most Iranian official held secret talks with the Americans, during the terms of Presidents Ronald Reagan and George HW Bush, was very reserved and confidential in these talks and confined this task to his brother" .

The most famous secret meeting between Americans and Iranians was the travel of national security adviser Robert McFarlane to Iran. The current president, Hassan Rowhani, was one of his recipients at Mehrabad airport in Tehran. They cut together a key candy cake, a sign that the visit was a key to relations. Between the two countries, after this famous visit, the two sides exchanged travel, and continued secret relations between them. It is said that the news of the visit of McFarlane to Tehran is the late Syrian President Hafez al-Assad .

During Bush's father's reign, Rafsanjani was then president of the republic. Iran also held secret negotiations with the Americans, which resulted in the release of American hostages in Lebanon, which were held by Hezbollah.

At the first meeting of President Mohamed Khatami at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, he expressed his desire to hold direct talks with the US side, but was soon out of sight after his aides told him that US President Bill Clinton wanted to translate a process into this advanced step .

Opposition leader Mehdi Karoubi, who was also under House arrest, participated in the Interfax summit in New York. On the day he was speaker of the Iranian parliament, US Senator Arlen Specter met with a brief talk about the relations between the two countries. The Islamic Republic did not object to the meeting, At that time, the speaker of parliament held talks with a senior US official .

The first public talks between the United States and the Islamic Republic took place during the US campaign against Afghanistan. The coordination between the two countries was in full swing, which revealed many points of convergence between them, especially the strategy .

The report noted that "Mohammed Jawad Zarif since he was a delegate to his country at the United Nations, is a pleasant negotiator with the Americans and was meeting with the US ambassador without reservations, former Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi held more than a meeting with former US Vice President Joseph Biden on the sidelines of the conference Davos in Switzerland, Iran's Ambassador to Iraq Hussein Kazemi Qomi met more than once US Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker, Secretary of the National Security Council Said Jalili met directly with the United States representative in the Geneva talks Ambassador William Burns .

He pointed out that the Sultanate of Oman is considered the American-Iranian Guest House, where since the time of former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, secret meetings have been held between the Foreign Ministers of the two countries or delegations from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries. US after the crisis Trump coup on the nuclear agreement . "

The report states that "under the current President Hassan Rowhani, and for the first time after severing relations between the two countries, former US President Barack Obama initiated a spiritual call for a solution on the Iranian nuclear program, as well as numerous contacts between the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the two countries, The signing of the Geneva Accord, and the guide of the Republic, Ali Khamenei, was keen to prove that these meetings, contacts and direct and public talks were in the interest of Iran and its nuclear program, although the foreign ministers of the two countries were sometimes out of business and busy with jokes and congratulations on holidays

The report concluded that "on the impact of surprise Trump, and despite an attempt to reform the United States, it seems that the guide of the Islamic Republic Ali Khamenei has no objection to a spiritual response to the US initiative, and may be encouraging to conduct a secret, and Iranian officials, whether conservative or more moderate A tendency of US officials to implement Trump's call as soon as possible, and seem willing to conduct any kind of negotiations under any roof and without any conditions, despite their fear of the greed of the US negotiator to get more concessions, the country is on the verge of collapse .

News of the direction of Turkey to hand over the US pastor to Washington within days

Javishoglu reiterates that sanctions will not pressure his country

Erdogan greets his supporters during an election of his ruling party in Ankara (Reuters)
Ankara: Saeed Abdel Razek
LONDON (Reuters) - US Secretary of State Andrew Branson, who has spent more than two years in prison on charges of supporting terrorism and political espionage, And then placed under house arrest in his home in Izmir (western Turkey) for "health reasons".
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and US President Donald Trump are expected to discuss the Branson issue by the end of next week, after presenting the results of ongoing negotiations between the two countries.
The paper, which represents the secular trend opposed to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said that "the compromises that are being discussed now, led first by Ankara to hand over Washington to the pastor before being sentenced on charges of espionage and association with organizations described by the (terrorist), referring to the movement The service of the Turkish preacher based in America and accused by Turkey of orchestrating a failed coup attempt in mid-July 2016 and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). The move is in exchange for Washington's extradition of Mohammed Hakan Attila, deputy chief executive of Turkey's state-owned lender Khalk, serving a three-year sentence in the United States for involvement in US sanctions against Iran between 2010 and 2015.
The newspaper said that «Turkey has demanded the United States, the mitigation of the judicial ruling is expected to be issued soon against Bank Khalk, which is expected to include the bank fined billions of dollars, in exchange for the release of local staff working in the US Consulate in Istanbul, were arrested on the background of alleged links with the movement Gulen and workers Kurdistan and political or military espionage ».
The Turkish officials have given utmost importance to this possible verdict. The bank's conviction of money laundering and circumventing US sanctions against Iran would hit Turkey's economic reputation in the killing because its commercial dealings with the world are being carried out, and the Turkish lira will collapse.
If the White House responds to this request, the cases of 18 other US citizens detained in Turkish prisons will be discussed later.
On the other hand, Turkish Foreign Minister Mouloud Gawishoglu reiterated that no one can get a result by exerting pressure and dictates and imposing sanctions on Turkey. In an address to a ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) party in Antalya last night, Gawishoglu said his country's relations with the United States were currently "in a bad phase." The most important points of contention between the two countries are the American adoption of the "Gulen Terrorist Organization" (referring to the service movement), the question of handover of its leader Gulen to Turkey, the organization from America, and the support of the United States Kurdish People Protection Units The PKK in Syria) with weapons.
He pointed out that the current crisis in relations with Washington revolves around the American pastor, Andrew Branson, arrested in Turkey on charges of espionage and terrorism, and called on the American side to sit as "allies and discuss all points of contention." He also warned that things are not resolved by sanctions, saying that "you imposed sanctions you will find sanctions imposed on you in return."
He confirmed that his meeting with his US counterpart Mike Pompeo in Singapore on the sidelines of the meetings of ASEAN foreign ministers was positive. Washington announced last Wednesday that Turkish Justice Minister Abdelhamid Gul and interior minister Suleiman Sweileh would be included on the sanctions list, citing the failure to release Branson, who is still on trial in Turkey. He is due to appear again in court on October 12.
According to US laws, potential US financial assets are blocked for people on the sanctions list and are prohibited from establishing business relations with Americans.
Branson was arrested in October 2016. The court decided to arrest him on 9 December of the same year on charges of several crimes, including crimes under the name of the Gulen movement and the PKK "under the umbrella of a cleric", and his cooperation with them despite his prior knowledge of their objectives, Imposed a house arrest on Wednesday before last.
Meanwhile, a report by the Washington Institute for Near East Studies on the future of Turkey under Erdogan, published yesterday, that "Ankara is heading towards the abyss, where is currently in a deep crisis because of the policies of the Turkish President, which increased after 2016, And imposed an emergency regime to prosecute opponents, while many of them had nothing to do with what happened in that coup ».
Erdogan's policies have generated divisions among opponents of the regime and his supporters from his party's Development and Justice Party, and the Turkish president has distorted the image of voters who have not voted for him and suppressed them in a strategy that is strongly against democracy.
In another context, said Jawishoglu, that his country seeks to establish sound relations with the countries of Europe, calling for the need not to look to anyone to make Turkey take a unilateral approach in its foreign policy. At the same time, the Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned Greek Justice Minister Stavros Kontunis' refusal to extradite Turgut Kaya, a Turkish national, to the list of wanted terrorists of INTERPOL despite a Greek judicial decision to extradite him to Ankara.
Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksui said the Greek minister's refusal to extradite Kaya, despite a judicial ruling, showed the reaction of the traditional negative Greek politicians against Turkey.

EU Blocks Trump’s Iran Sanctions To Protect Companies Hours Ahead Of Snapback

by Tyler Durden

Mon, 08/06/2018 - 07:46

The European Union issued a statement Monday ahead of when renewed US sanctions are set to snap back against Iran after midnight US Eastern time, saying it "deeply regrets" the sanctions and will take immediate action to protect European companies still doing business with Iran.

The statement by EU diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini and the foreign ministers of Britain, France and Germany pledged to also work to keep "effective financial channels" open with Iran. "We deeply regret the re-imposition of sanctions by the US, due to the latter's withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)," the statement issued from Brussels begins.

The US has ordered all other countries to halt imports of Iranian oil by early November or face punitive measures. In a statement on SundaySecretary of State Mike Pompeo said the White House will detail implementation of the measures sometime Monday morning.

As expected after the Trump administration was unmoved by European leaders' calls for an exemption, the EU will seek legal protection for firms in the 28-nation bloc to work with Iran by invoking its so-called blocking statute, considered the most powerful tool at its immediate disposal. When invoked, it bans any EU company from complying with US sanctions and does not recognize any foreign court rulings seeking to enforce American penalties.

According to the statement:

We are determined to protect European economic operators engaged in legitimate business with Iran, in accordance with EU law and with UN Security Council resolution 2231. This is why the European Union’s updated Blocking Statute enters into force on 7 August to protect EU companies doing legitimate business with Iran from the impact of US extra-territorial sanctions.

The EU also restated its commitment to upholding the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA), calling the 2015 brokered agreement "a matter of international security":

The remaining parties to the JCPOA have committed to work on, inter alia, the preservation and maintenance of effective financial channels with Iran, and the continuation of Iran's export of oil and gas.

At the end of the day Monday, the following sanctions will be re-imposed according to a US Treasury Department official statement:

“Sanctions on the purchase or acquisition of US dollar bank notes by the Government of Iran; sanctions on Iran’s trade in gold or precious metals; sanctions on the direct or indirect sale, supply, or transfer to or from Iran of graphite, raw, or semi-finished metals such as aluminum and steel, coal, and software for integrating industrial processes; sanctions on significant transactions related to the purchase or sale of Iranian rials, or the maintenance of significant funds or accounts outside the territory of Iran denominated in the Iranian rial; sanctions on the purchase, subscription to, or facilitation of the issuance of Iranian sovereign debt; sanctions on Iran’s automotive sector.”

Furthermore, according to the US Treasury, this includes a ban on Iranian-origin carpets and foodstuffs, and notably export or re-export commercial airplanes as well as services and parts.

It is unclear if the EU blocking statute will have any significant impact beyond being used as sending a strong political message.

First adopted in 1996, the blocking statute bans EU companies from complying with the extraterritorial effects of US sanctions, allowing them to recover damages arising from such sanctions, and declares null any foreign court proceedings seeking to impose penalties among EU countries.

Reuters explained in May after President Trump formally pulled the United States from the JCPOA that "it has never been used and is seen by European governments more as a political weapon than a regulation because its rules are vague and difficult to enforce, serving mainly as a warning to the United States."

And further that, "The international reach of the U.S. financial system and the U.S. presence of many European companies also raise questions about its effectiveness."

But perhaps the real question remains whether or not Iran's economy will weather the storm, which could ultimately become to catalyst for European companies severing relations.

WASHINGTON Reuters)
- US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday that Washington would retaliate against Iran after it suspended it under a nuclear deal between Tehran and Damascus, which Trump has canceled , would have a major impact on Iran's economy. As it will not enable the government of Iran to buy US banknotes, and will be subject to a wide range of industries, including textiles and carpets for sanctions, as well as the embargo, which will be the import of its oil later and penalties to be landed in foreign companies to deal with.

Iran is witnessing protests over economic conditions, deteriorating living conditions, rising unemployment and rising prices in the country's markets amid a severe foreign exchange crisis.

An attempt by the Iranian government in April to impose a fixed rate for the riyal led to a boom in currency exchange on the black market, forcing the bank to back down from its plan and later causing the currency to fall to record highs in June.

The Iranian riyal recorded an unprecedented deterioration against the US dollar, and the Iranian riyal fell to 112,000 riyals against the dollar on the black market.

The sharp fall of the Iranian currency against the dollar and other foreign currencies has led to a significant rise in the prices of cars, real estate and commodities, especially imported ones.

The Iranian riyal has been steadily declining for years, but its decline has accelerated in recent months after the US decisionThe withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Iran in May increased the pressure on the riyal.

The central bank has been criticized especially for its handling of the cash crisis and the loss of more than half of the Iranian riyal against the dollar last year, prompting the government to sack the deputy director general of the foreign exchange department of the central bank, Ahmed Araghji.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's President Hassan Rowhani accused the United States of launching a "psychological war" on his country a few hours before US sanctions were imposed on Tehran after Washington withdrew from the nuclear deal.
"They want to wage a psychological war on Iran and cause divisions among the people," Rowhani said. "Tehran may hold talks with the United States if Washington proves credible after it withdrew from the nuclear agreement and re-imposed sanctions on us."
"We always prefer diplomacy and talks, but the talks require the secretariat," Rohani said during a speech on state television. "The United States is re-imposing sanctions on Tehran, withdrawing from the nuclear agreement (signed in 2015) and then wanting to talk to us," he said. That «Trump call for direct talks for domestic consumption only in the United States .. And to create chaos in Iran».

Iraqi President Fuad Masum

Iraqi President Fuad Masum

Iraqi President Fuad Masum said on Monday that Iraq's conditions and the nature of its relations with Iran make it difficult for him to abide by the implementation of sanctions imposed by Washington on Tehran.

"Iraq should not be with a party against another party in the current conflicts," Masoum said in an interview with the Hadith al-Nahrain program.

The first package of US sanctions will begin on Tuesday, including Iran's ability to buy dollars, gold, precious metals, steel and automobiles.

According to US officials, the United States will not grant exemptions or exemptions from the application of these sanctions, but will consider any applications individually.

As for the wave of demonstrations in the cities of southern and central Iraq, Masoum said that "the security services were found to protect the demonstrators, not kill them or use firearms to disperse them."

"The continuation of the sit-ins may lead to problems that are not as promising, as happened in the sit-ins witnessed in Anbar province in the past," Masoum said.
