Iranian official calls for negotiations with Washington in Iraq

US President Donald Trump met his Swiss counterpart, Ole Maurer, while Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo telephoned Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

After the reception and the talk, it is possible to talk about opening channels of communication and negotiation between Tehran and Washington, amid efforts to reduce tension and avoid slipping into war.

On May 11, Trump announced that he was ready to receive phone calls from Iranian officials at any time.

According to US leaks, Trump provided Switzerland with a special telephone number and asked it to pass it on to the Iranians, reflecting his willingness to negotiate with them about the nuclear program.

The Iranians responded that the US president had their phone numbers and could contact them if he wanted to.

Since Switzerland rarely appears in political news and has not received its president in the White House in recent years, the visit can not be separated from attempts to open channels of communication and pass addresses.

Not only that, but Trump appreciated Switzerland's role in facilitating international mediation and diplomatic relations on behalf of the United States.

While waiting for his Swiss guest to arrive, Trump expressed his hope that there would be no war with Iran and later announced that they had discussed the crisis in the Middle East.

It is important to note that Switzerland sponsors American interests in Tehran and Iran in Washington, which qualifies it to play the role of mediator between the two sides.

Oman's balance The Sultanate of Oman
, for its part, knows its balance in its international and regional relations, which enables it to bring the views of the Americans and the Iranians together and convince them to sit at the table.

It is no coincidence that Pompeo's connection with Sultan Qaboos coincided with Trump's reception of the Swiss president at the White House.

According to the State Department, Pompeo discussed with the Omani leadership the danger posed by Iran to the Middle East region, and did not mention that he requested Muscat mediation to negotiate with Tehran.

Speaking to Al Jazeera about the connotations of Pompeo's connection with Sultan Amman, Georgetown University professor of international relations William Lawrence said Trump did not know what he wanted and pressed the brake and pedal at the same time.

He expected the contact with Amman to be part of the American pressure on Iran, stressing that the war with Tehran is not in the interest of any Gulf state.

But the New York Times commented on the news by recalling that Muscat played a long-term mediator between the West and Tehran and was a distant channel of communication between the governments of Iranian President Hassan Rowhani and former US President Barack Obama.

The mediation culminated in a nuclear agreement signed by Tehran and international powers in mid-2015, promising a major diplomatic achievement, before Trump withdrew from it last year.

Since Oman's diplomacy has succeeded in reaching the 2015 agreement, it is not unlikely that it will play a role in resolving the current crisis, especially since it enjoys respect for both sides of the dispute.

Positive indications
Although there has been no leak of information on the opening of channels of communication so far, there are positive indications that the parties have decided to reduce the tension and that they may engage in direct negotiations or through an intermediary.

The New York Times reported that US President Donald Trump told Acting Defense Minister Patrick Chenahan that he did not want a war with Iran.

In a report published Thursday, the newspaper quoted several US officials as saying Trump was firm in his refusal to go to war with Iran.

By virtue of his proximity to both parties, Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi has ruled out a war between Iran and the United States, saying they do not want to do so, stressing that there are indications from both sides that things will end well.

According to the British writer David Hurst, the US Secretary of State surprised Abdul Mahdi and asked him to inform the Iranians that President Donald Trump is not enthusiastic about a war against them, all he wants is to conclude a new nuclear agreement bearing his name.

Badrohm Iranian officials ruled out a war with the United States and stressed their adherence to the policy of restraint despite the "unacceptable American escalation."

At the start of a meeting with his Japanese counterpart, the Iranian foreign minister said: "We are acting with utmost restraint despite the withdrawal of the United States last May from the nuclear agreement, officially known as the Comprehensive Joint Action Plan."

Trump more cautious than his top advisers on Iran

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump says he hopes the U.S. is not on a path to war with Iran amid fears that his two most hawkish advisers could be angling for such a conflict with the Islamic Republic.

Asked Thursday if the U.S. was going to war with Iran, the president replied, "I hope not" — a day after he repeated a desire for dialogue, tweeting, "I'm sure that Iran will want to talk soon."

The tone contrasted with a series of moves by the U.S. and Iran that have sharply escalated tensions in the Middle East in recent days. For the past year, national security adviser John Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have been the public face of the administration's "maximum pressure" campaign against Tehran.

The friction has rattled lawmakers who are demanding more information on the White House's claims of rising Iranian aggression. Top leaders in Congress received a classified briefing on Iran Thursday, but many other lawmakers from both parties have criticized the White House for not keeping them informed.

Iran poses a particular challenge for Trump. While he talks tough against foreign adversaries to the delight of his supporters, a military confrontation with Iran could make him appear to be backtracking on a campaign pledge to keep America out of foreign entanglements.

Lawmakers and allies, however, worry that any erratic or miscalculated response from Trump could send the U.S. careening into conflict.

Trump pulled the U.S. out of the Iran nuclear deal last year and reinstated sanctions on Tehran that are crippling its economy.

Tensions rose dramatically May 5, when Bolton announced that the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group would be rushed from the Mediterranean to the Persian Gulf ahead of schedule in response to "a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings," without going into details.

Since then, four oil tankers, including two belonging to Saudi Arabia, were targeted in an apparent act of sabotage off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, according to officials in the region, and a Saudi pipeline was attacked by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels from Yemen. The U.S. also ordered non-essential staff out of Iraq and has dispatched additional military assets to the region.

The Senate will receive a classified briefing on Iran on Tuesday, according to Jim Risch of Idaho, the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee. The House has requested a classified briefing as well.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said briefings are necessary because informing leaders "is no substitute for the full membership of the Congress." She said a failure to inform lawmakers is "part of a pattern" for the Trump administration "that is not right," because the power to declare war resides with Congress.

"I hope that the president's advisers recognize that they have no authorization to go forward in any way" against Iran, Pelosi said.

Trump has dismissed suggestions that any of his advisers, particularly Bolton, are pushing him into a conflict.

"John has strong views on things, but that's OK. I actually temper John, which is pretty amazing isn't it?" Trump said recently when asked if he was satisfied with Bolton's advice. "I have different sides. I mean, I have John Bolton, and I have other people that are a little more dovish than him. And ultimately I make the decision."

Mark Dubowitz, an advocate of a hardline policy toward Iran and chief executive of the Federation for Defense of Democracies, said, "Trump is smart to let these advisers play the roles they play and it really does help him lay the table for negotiation, but ultimately, it comes back to his ability to oversee a negotiation and do so wisely and judiciously, and that's an open question."

Tensions started to spiral last year when Trump pulled out of a deal the U.S. and other world powers signed with Iran during the Obama administration. The deal lifted economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for curbing of its nuclear program.

Trump agreed with critics of the deal that it didn't address Tehran's work on ballistic missiles or its support of militant groups around the region. His administration reinstated sanctions that had been lifted under the deal — the Europeans and other signatories are still in it — and has piled on more.

Trita Parsi, an adjunct associate professor at Georgetown University who advised the Obama administration on Iran, thinks the Iranians are trying to exploit Trump and Bolton's divergence on foreign policy issues.

He cited a recent tweet from Hessamoddin Ashena, an adviser to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, directed squarely at Trump and Bolton, who is easily recognized in public by his white, bushy mustache.

"You wanted a better deal with Iran. Looks like you are going to get a war instead. That's what happens when you listen to the mustache," the Iranian adviser said.

Maybe the Mullahs confronted with the reality that war would be like chopping off their own nose.  The people hate what the Mullahs have done to their country.  They would turn on them in a minute if the US were to support them.

Hey Iran. Stop building nuclear weapons and stop saying death to Israel.  It’s not that hard.

The Guardian published a report on the Iranian file of its Middle East correspondent Martin Chloff on the front page entitled "Iran asks militias to prepare for proxy war in the Middle East."

The newspaper learned from intelligence sources that the commander of the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, Qassem Soleimani, met with the leaders of the militias under the influence of Tehran during his recent visit to Iraq about three weeks ago and told them to "prepare to go to war proxy" against the backdrop of the US escalation against Tehran.

"Although Sulaymani has been accustomed to meeting militia leaders for five years, this last meeting was very different. It was much more than a call for the release of weapons," one source said.

The author explains that the US administration evacuated its employees from Baghdad and Erbil following the arrival of this information to the US Embassy in Baghdad, and raised the level of alert in the military bases in Iraq and in various locations in the Gulf after I felt that their interests may be at risk.
"Several militia leaders operating under the umbrella of the popular crowd attended the meeting called by Soleimani, according to intelligence sources who said one of the senior officials met with a Western official and expressed concern about what happened," Chloff said.

He added that a convoy of Iranian military supplies and rockets passed through western Iraq to Syria and arrived successfully to the capital Damascus, according to the newspaper from Western diplomats, stressing that the convoy of supplies succeeded in overcoming Western censorship and hide from the eyes of the Western intelligence services, which did not know it only after arrival Syrian capital.

The idea that Iran emerged from the fighting with a bolder advocate dominated the recent dialogues between US President Donald Trump and his hawkish hawks, such as National Security Adviser John Bolton and Foreign Secretary Mike Pompeo, two of the pillars of the escalation against Iran.

No wall, millions of Islamic refugee's pouring in and taking over our cities, extreamists muslims in our government, calling our military and police other than the heros they are, paying off our enemies, negotiating with terrorists,  a trator bodog/ for high ranking terrorists to name a few. BAGHDAD - Mawazine News
The coalition of state law, led by Nuri al-Maliki, on Thursday, the Iraqi government not to comply with the US threats and statement of its position on the Iranian-American crisis.
"The US military moves and mobilization in the region is just a powerful show to blackmail Gulf leaders under the pretext of protecting them," MP Mansour al-Baiji said in a statement received by Mawazine News.
"Trump will not dare to strike the Islamic Republic of Iran or launch a military war because he lives under the mentality of the merchant and businessman, and what he does by sending his military campaigns is to pressure the countries of the region to raise money and blackmail them more."
"The US president is well aware that the war with the Islamic Republic is a losing step for him, so he is conducting military and media reviews in order to fill public opinion and shed light on his military reviews in the region," he said.
"The sanctions imposed by the United States on the countries that deal with the Islamic Republic is unacceptable, especially since the biggest victim is Iraq," he said, stressing that "the Iraqi government must determine its position and not to comply with US threats as the most affected." A43
