ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi on Tuesday suggested Baghdad would rely on the Kurdistan Region and Turkey as a substitute to export crude oil as tensions between the United States and Iran intensify.

As the standoff between the US and Iran continues, Tehran has warned it would block all oil shipments from its waters, including the strategic Strait of Hormuz, if the US does not ease its sanctions on the country.

With one-third of sea-borne oil passing through it daily, the Strait of Hormuz is a strategic and crucial channel between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) -
An Iraqi political source close to the Iraqi prime minister, Adel Abdul Mahdi, has denied the Iraqi government's decision to appoint a head of its two delegations to be sent to Washington and Tehran.
The source told RT: "There is nothing official about the leadership of Speaker of the House of Representatives Mohammed Halbusi delegations, did not specify their members also."
The source added that "the delegations will arrange several meetings with Iranian and American officials to reduce tension between them."
It is noteworthy that the international media quoted Iraqi sources that the President of the House of Representatives, Mohammed Halbusi, will head the Iraqi delegations to Tehran and Washington.

Iraqi delegations to visit both countries

“US and Iranian officials have assured us that they do not want to go to war,” says PM

BAGHDAD: Iraq will send delegations to Tehran and Washington over the next few days in an attempt to ease tensions in the region, Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi said on Tuesday.

“Iraq has conducted high-level contacts (between the US and Iran), and its vision is very close to the European vision to resolve the crisis in the region,” Abdul Mahdi said.

“US and Iranian officials have assured us that they do not want to go to war. So we will send delegations to Washington and Tehran.”

Tensions started to rise between the two countries after the US withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, otherwise known as the Iran nuclear deal, in May 2018.

Since then, the US has imposed economic sanctions on Iran. US President Donald Trump warned on Monday that Iran would be met with “great force” if it attacked American interests in the Middle East.
