US deploys more warships to Middle East as tensions with Iran flare

US deploys more warships to Middle East as tensions with Iran flare

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The United States has deployed more warships to the Middle East as tensions continue to rise between Washington and Tehran.

The USS Arlington, which transports marines, amphibious vehicles, conventional landing craft, and rotary aircraft, as well as a Patriot missile defense system will join the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and an Air Force bomber task force, the Pentagon announced on May 10.

The deployment is “in response to indications of heightened Iranian readiness to conduct offensive operations against US forces and our interests,” read a statement from the Department of Defense.

“The United States does not seek conflict with Iran, but we are postured and ready to defend US forces and interests in the region,” the statement added.

The Abraham Lincoln was sent to the Middle East “to send a clear and unmistakable message” to Iran, National Security Advisor John Bolton stated on May 5, adding that they are ready to respond to any attack by Iranian forces or their proxies.

US President Donald Trump later tried a softer line, saying he would like to talk to Iran’s leaders, inviting them to “call me.”

A senior Iranian military officer dismissed both the military threats and the suggestion for talks.

“Negotiations with Americans will not take place, and Americans will not dare to take military action against us,” Brig. Gen. Yadollah Javani, Lieutenant Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for Political Affairs, told Tasnim News on May 10.

“The Americans are in a state of turmoil and anger,” because Iran did not descend into chaos after Trump withdrew from the nuclear accord and imposed sanctions, Javani said. “Because of their desperation, they have done whatever they can to break the Iranian nation’s 40-year-old resistance.”

The sanctions have crippled Iran’s economy, but not brought Tehran closer to meeting US demands that it cease its missile weapons program and end its regional activities. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, pointing out that under the terms of the nuclear deal Iran does not have to perform its commitments regarding nuclear activities if any of the other parties of the agreement re-impose or introduce new sanctions, this week gave European partners to the accord 60 days to ease pressure on the banking and oil sectors or Iran will restart some nuclear activity.

Iranians staged nationwide protests on May 10 in support of Rouhani's stance.

The new US military deployment comes after an “escalation” of activity from Iran, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo explained this week. He paid a surprise visit to Baghdad on May 7 where he met with Iraq’s Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi and President Barham Salih, reminding them that Iraq has a responsibility to protect US diplomatic interests and coalition personnel in the country, leading to speculation that the suspected threat may be emanating from Iranian-backed elements within Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF).

Baghdad, which tries to maintain delicately balanced ties with both Washington and Tehran, has sought to avoid getting drawn into the crisis, instead pitching Iraq as a place where adversaries can come together and hold constructive dialogue.

"The imposition of any US decision on Iran if committed to Iraq, the Kurdistan Region is also committed to it," said an official in the Ministry of Finance and Economy of the Kurdistan Regional Government.

The United States has decided in recent days that no country can deal with Iran in the purchase and sale of metal products such as (aluminum, iron, etc.), and this American decision has to do with some form of the Kurdistan region also.

"Any decision issued by the United States and committed to Iraq, the Kurdistan Region is also committed to it," said Samal Abdul Rahman, Director General of Customs in the Kurdistan Region in the Ministry of Finance and Economy in a press statement on Saturday.

Abdul Rahman added that "the Kurdistan Region if not imported minerals from Iran, it affects the economy of the region, but that Baghdad has not yet directed any decision to the Kurdistan Region about it."

As for the rate of imports of the Kurdistan Region for metals annually from Iran, Abdul Rahman said, "So far there is no official statistics."

CNN reported that Washington had passed a phone number to Switzerland to be delivered to Iran to contact President Donald Trump, in response to a call he made yesterday at a news conference to the Iranian leadership.

"Trump openly appealed to the Iranians to contact him amid mounting tensions with Tehran" CNN quoted a diplomatic source as saying. "The White House contacted the Swiss last Thursday to pass a telephone number through which the Iranians could contact the US president."

"The Swiss will probably not give up the figure unless the Iranians ask for it themselves, and they think they are unlikely to do so," the source said.

The United States and Iran have no formal diplomatic ties, while Switzerland represents US interests in Iran , providing services to US citizens such as visas. It is also a channel of diplomacy between the two countries, despite the existence of other mechanisms of communication between the two countries.

Source: The White House passes the number of contact to Iran via Turkey via Switzerland
A well-
informed diplomatic source has revealed a desire by the US administration to reach out to the Iranians through a third party, days after tensions between Washington and Tehran have risen.
"The White House is continuing with Swiss officials to pass a telephone number to the Iranians to contact US President Donald Trump if he asks," CNN quoted the source as saying on condition of anonymity. The Iranians are Swiss. "

"The Swiss will probably not give the figure unless the Iranians specifically request it," the diplomat said, adding that "the Iranians have not asked for it yet and are unlikely to ask for it."

US President Donald Trump said earlier, "I would like to I see from Iran, I want to see them call me, "he said." They have to call. If they do that, we will be open to talking with them. "

For his part, Assistant Commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards for political affairs, Brigadier General Idullah Javani, said that Iran will not participate in talks with the Americans, adding that "the Iranian people consider America unreliable, and that America will not dare to take military action against Iran."

In the absence of diplomatic relations with Iran, the United States has an agreement with Switzerland to represent US interests in Iran.

CNN RATINGS FALL TO ALL-YEAR LOW – OVERTAKEN BY HALLMARK CHANNEL!

LOL!🤣😆😂Liars/fake news.

Our President Trump was right again.

It seems more Americans want to watch Hallmark’s Campfire Kiss than CNN’s Anderson Cooper

Kit Daniels | Infowars.com - APRIL 16, 2019

CNN has hit an all-year ratings low, according to Nielsen Media Research, and the network is especially hurting during prime time hours when it seems more Americans would rather watch Hallmark movies.

The network, which experienced a ratings boost thanks to Russiagate, is now shedding viewers after the Mueller probe fizzled away without the bombshell revelations the network’s viewers likely anticipated.

CNN had its lowest-rated week of the year in prime time, while MSNBC had its second lowest-rated week of the year in the 25-54 demo and its third lowest among total viewers in prime time,” reported TVNewser. “Yes, Fox News and MSNBC are consistently the two-most-watched basic cable networks, but they, along with CNN, are losing viewers. In prime time, Fox News was -8% in total viewers, MSNBC was -28% in total viewers, while CNN was -47% vs. the comparable week in 2018.

Like CNN, the Rachel Maddow Show, hosted by MSNBC, also suffered a massive ratings dropafter the wind-down of Mueller probe.

CNN is currently ranked #15 among cable channels during prime time, according to data released by Nielsen, which shows that the network, interestingly enough, got beat out by the Hallmark Channel.

Influential Shiite leader calls on Iraq to mediate between US, Iran

Influential Shiite leader calls on Iraq to mediate between US, Iran

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Iraqi Shiite cleric Ammar al-Hakim, who leads the largest bloc in the parliament, called for the government to take on a mediation role between its two friends, Iran and the United States, in order ease rising tensions, arguing that the consequences of a confrontation between Tehran and Washington will be dire for his country.

"We are very aware of the dangers that surround Iraq as a result of the US-Iran conflict,” Hakim, the head of the Reform Coalition, said on Friday during a ceremony in Najaf commemorating the death of his father Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim who was assassinated in a bomb attack in 2003 – the year he returned to Iraq after living in Iran for 20 years.

While pointing out that Iraq geographically sits in the heart of the potential conflict and would be caught in the shockwave, Hakim said the government should not sit idly by. “Iraq will not sit with arms folded when it comes to its interests and security,” he said.

Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi was elected to the post with the support of Hakim’s coalition of Shiite and Sunni parties. His government has set itself on a middle road path, developing friendly ties with all its neighbours, including regional rivals Iran and Saudi Arabia, saying Iraq will be a land where adversaries can meet instead of a place where conflicts are played out.

Despite Baghdad’s attempt at neutrality, it is being pulled into the fray. Iraqi former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki called on Friday for Iran and the US to use [http://www.rudaw.net/english/middleeast/iraq/100520191] “the language of reason and dialogue” in order to avoid military escalation in the region.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo altered his travel plans in order to pay a hurried visit to Baghdad this week where he reminded Abdul-Mahdi that Iraq is obliged to protect US diplomatic and military personnel in the country. America’s concerns were sparked by what it says was an “escalation” in Iranian activity. The Pentagon has deployed warships to the Middle East as a precaution.

These alleged threats could be emanating from Iranian-backed elements within Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF). There are some 5,000 US troops stationed in Iraq.

“Americans are in trouble now, especially considering that US troops’ bases are known in Iraq and the region and can be targeted easily,” Moeen al-Kadhimi, a senior commander in the PMF, said on Thursday.

Others with connections to the militias, known in Iraq as the Hashd al-Shaabi, denied the possibility of a confrontation between them and US soldiers. “Hashd al-Shaabi is a security force under the authority of the prime minister, and it is politically and on the ground affiliated with the Iraqi government… We work in line with the policy of the state,” Nassim Abdullah, a member of the Badr Organization’s Fatih bloc, said on Friday. Fatih is the second-largest bloc in the Iraqi parliament and led by Hadi al-Amiri.

US President Donald Trump opened the door to negotiations on Thursday when he invited Iran’s leaders to “call me.”

CNN reported that US officials gave a phone number Trump could be reached on to the Swiss for them to share it with the Iranians. The United States does not have a diplomatic mission in Iran. Instead, Switzerland serves as an intermediary between them and provides some consular services for US citizens in the country.

Iran is not likely to take Trump up on the offer, according to one military official.

Iran’s oil sector has been the main target in sanctions re-imposed by Washington after Trump pulled out of the nuclear accord on May 8, 2018, labelling Iran the world’s largest state sponsor of terror and demanding Tehran rein in its regional activities.

"The policy of zeroing Iranian oil export by the United States of America means transition from the policy of pressure to the policy of strangulation against Iranian state and its people,” Hakim added, warning that “This will have catastrophic, serious impact on the region in general and Iraq in particular."

He also said that now there is a "golden chance" for Iraq to invest and boost economy as it enjoys good relations with international community, warning that terrorism may return to Iraq but "the security of Iraq is a red line."

B-52s, Patriots, F-35s and more: America’s MidEast deployment rundown

In recent days, the US has announced the deployment of an array of military power to the Middle East as tensions grow with Iran. On Friday, the Department of Defense approved the addition of the USS Arlington and a Patriot battery to US Central Command to fill a request last week. The additional forces come as tensions with Iran are rising and the US has warned Iran that any attack by Iranian forces or their proxies will be met with retaliation.

The following is a list of the known forces that the US has deployed.

The USS Arlington

A 24,000 ton, 207-meter-long ship commissioned in 2013 is a San-Antonio class amphibious transport vessel. It is designed to transport US Marines, vehicles and aircraft to be used to support amphibious assaults. It can carry up to 800 troops with a dozen vehicles. Although with the 6th Fleet, which operates in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, it was ordered to join the deployment, according to the United States Naval Institute News.

The 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit

Elements of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) were also dispatched. They transited the Strait of Hormuz with the amphibious ship Kearsarge.

The Kearsarge ARG

The amphibious ready group (ARG) led by the Kearsarge entered the 6th Fleet’s area of operations in December with the MEU and over the last months has been deployed to the Persian Gulf, steaming around various countries. It has up to 4,500 sailors and marines aboard its various units. These include, according to Naval Today, the USS Arlington which is mentioned above, the dock landing ship USS Fort McHenry, a helicopter squadron, a tactical air squadron and a naval beach group.

USS McFaul and USNS Alan Shepard

The destroyer USS McFaul and the ammunition ship USNS Alan Shepard were photographed in the Straits of Hormuz on May 7. They had been in the Red Sea in April.

B-52 bombers

Two B-52s landed Thursday in Qatar, part of four B-52s sent to the region. They flew from Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana and were supported by two KC-10s from McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey, according to reports. They form part of a bomber task force of Barksdale’s 20th Bomb Squadron.

The USS Abraham Lincoln

The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike force passed through the Suez Canal last week en route to the Persian Gulf. It included the USS Leyte Gulf and destroyers.

Patriot missiles

US Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan also sent a US Patriot missile battery to bolster Central Command.

F-35s

In mid-April, the US sent several F-35s to the United Arab Emirates. These included maintenance and support units from the 388th Fighter Wing and Air Force Reserve 419th Fighter Wing.

IRAQ’S FORMER PM MALIKI JOINS CHORUS AGAINST U.S.-IRAN POLICY

Maliki was the leader of Iraq during a period of intense sectarianism, when pro-Iranian forces were largely seen as increasing their hold on Baghdad.

Iraq’s former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki released several statements in the last week warning the US against making Iraq a battlefield for its tensions with Iran. Last week he warned that Iraq should not become a base to threaten other countries. This week he reiterated his views.

Maliki was the leader of Iraq during a period of intense sectarianism, when pro-Iranian forces were largely seen as increasing their hold on Baghdad. Islamic State used alienation by Iraq’s Sunni minority to galvanize its forces in 2014 and take over a third of Iraq. Maliki was pushed from power and Haider al-Abadi became Prime Minister. Yet Maliki has retained his desire to return to power in Baghdad and still heads his old State of Law party. He still has 25 seats in parliament.

After US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Iraq, Maliki met with US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Satterfield and said Iraq should be distanced from any regional conflicts. In subsequent statements he called for an end to US-Iran tensions and warned that US sanctions on Iran and other US actions were a violation of international law and would have consequences in Iraq.

The purpose of Maliki’s comments appears to be his attempt to maintain relevance in Iraq. The US has warned the mostly Shi’ite paramilitary Popular Mobilization Forces against any attacks on US troops, warning that they will be viewed as proxies of Iran. Maliki previously had enjoyed US support when the US left Iraq in 2011. He was seen as a Shi’ite strongman who would keep the country intact. Today his role is seen as a driver of sectarianism who eroded the country in the lead-up to ISIS. But he wants to re-make his reputation.

It is the latest round of Iraqi former Prime Ministers seeking to stay in the spotlight. Abadi has also been doing the rounds, including a long interview with The Independent to sell himself as a future Prime Minister. There is no doubt Maliki thinks he will have a second iteration in some form or another at the helm of power in Baghdad.

What they just do, not what they say...

Trump-Iran.jpg

The head of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian Shura Council sent a message to US President Donald Trump that no one would contact him from Tehran, regardless of whether he tried to pass his phone number or impose sanctions.

"I believe that America will not go to war with Iran, and it knows that it will emerge from it as a loser," said Hishmatullah Falah Bisha, head of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian Shura Council.

"No one in Iran will telephone Trump, no matter what he tries," the official Anbar Fares told AFP on Sunday.

In a statement to reporters on Sunday at the conclusion of the meeting of the Islamic Shura Council in the presence of the Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, Bisha stressed that Iran has reached that level of defense readiness so that America does not enter into war with it. He added that it is possible that Iran will strike within the framework of its defense policy American targets 2000 km. And if the US Navy wants to strike Iran, the maximum distance between them and Iran will be 500 km so they are fully aware that they will engage themselves in a losing war.

He said that America has resorted to a military war instead of a military war accompanied by economic sanctions and embargoes.

He stressed that none of the Iranian officials would contact Trump by telephone at any time. "The Americans will have to put the issue of negotiating with Iran more seriously, and they certainly know that the Iran issue is different from any other country like North Korea," he said.

He said that the Americans had disclosed all their papers, but the Iranians still have a lot of papers that have not been disclosed so far that some of the recent ban measures are repeated repeatedly and are put to put pressure on Iran only.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran does not intend to escalate and expand the crisis and we believe that the Americans' position will weaken in the future.

At his recent press conference at the White House, US President Donald Trump appeared in a position ready to reap the benefits of his withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear dossier and his maximum sanctions on Tehran. "What they (Iranians) should do is call me and sit down. We can reach an agreement ... a fair agreement. All we want is for them not to have nuclear weapons. This is not a great demand. We will help them get back to a better position. "

"They should call. If they do that, we will be open to talking with them. " "I want them to be strong and wonderful, and to have a wonderful economy ... we can reach a fair agreement," he said.
