Baghdad

Iran is facing new challenges in the oil sector after ending the exemptions on the purchase of oil granted by the United States to eight countries, despite the support of the Secretary General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries "OPEC" Mohammed Barkindo.

"The challenge is not only for Iran but also for the whole OPEC and the oil industry," Barkindo said, stressing that "it is impossible to exclude Iran from the market."

Barkindo's remarks coincide with the end of US sanctions when sanctions were imposed in November on Iran over key buyers of Iranian oil, including China, India and Turkey.

The United States, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, along with other partners, have an obligation to ensure that the world markets are adequately supplied, Washington said at the announcement.

Iranian oil exports fell below 1 million barrels a day before sanctions imposed last November, compared to 2.5 million in previous months, but this figure has improved over the exemptions that have now ended.

The international oil and gas exhibition was attended by countries such as China, Russia, India, Germany, Spain, Turkey, South Korea and South Africa.

A number of attendees said most of the companies that did not attend the fair this year froze their business in Iran for fear of US sanctions.

The United States imposed sanctions on Iranian oil in November last year after a unilateral withdrawal from a nuclear deal in 2015 between Tehran and six major powers.

As the deadline for exemptions for the import of Iranian oil enters into force, we present in this report the question of how the US administration will deal with countries that will continue to import Iranian oil and the nature of the sanctions that Washington will impose on the countries in violation.

- What is the importance of the date of the second of May in the case of sanctions on Iran?
Following the withdrawal of the United States from the nuclear agreement with Iran in May 2018, the administration of President Donald Trump began imposing a series of sanctions on the Iranian regime, the most important of which was the ban on the purchase of Iranian oil.

However, on November 4, Washington gave eight countries six months to stop importing any oil. The countries are China, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, Greece and Italy. The deadline expires on May 2.

- Is the import of oil from Iran stopped?
No, there are now many ships in various seas and oceans of the world carrying oil or gas from Iran on its way to importing countries.

How did these countries respond to the American decision?
Some countries such as Japan, South Korea and Taiwan have reduced their imports of Iranian oil over the past six months, while Turkey, China and India have ignored US warnings.

Some countries, which previously bought Iranian crude, moved to new suppliers. Several countries also decided to stop completely importing oil and gas from Iran.

- Can Iran's oil be stopped immediately?
No, the contracts for the purchase of oil is a complex process, and these countries have been quick in recent days to sign more oil import deals with Iran, the delivery of the shipment in the coming weeks and months.

- What mechanism by which Washington can implement its threats to prevent Iran from exporting oil?
Washington has vowed to impose sanctions on countries that will continue to import oil from Iran. But the mechanism is very complex and difficult to apply to countries that have extensive ties with Washington such as China and India, Iran's biggest oil importers.

There are stalled talks with China over trade between the two countries, and US sanctions against China would complicate these important negotiations for the two countries and the global economy.

- What does Washington have to impose sanctions on Iranian oil importers?
According to Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo, "those who continue to import oil from Iran risk losing access to the US financial system and being able to deal with the US or US companies."

- Can US sanctions be circumvented to allow Iran to continue exporting oil?
Yes, this can be done in accordance with the opinions of experts on international sanctions by adopting a policy of bartering, entering into partnerships with Iran in one way or another, or paying for oil in twisted banking operations that the United States can not control.

- Can Saudi Arabia compensate oil markets for Iranian oil?
According to Jim Beckart of the research firm AHS, Saudi oil is light, unlike its heavy Iranian counterpart, so Saudi Arabia can not compensate for the absence of some of the heavy Iranian oil badly needed for China and India.

Will Washington go up against Iran and the countries that continue to import Iranian oil?
The escalation will have an impact on rising oil prices, which will have a negative impact on the US economy, especially as the election season approaches.

Saudi Arabia's wary stance to compensate for any market shortages confuses Washington's calculations, but it does not rule out the nature of Trump and Foreign Minister Pompeii and National Security Adviser John Bolton stress that Washington is taking unexpected steps forward.

- What is Tehran's policy to face the new US sanctions?
Iran has started cutting its oil prices to China and India to encourage them to face American pressure and sanctions, and it seems to have succeeded, at least so far.

On the other hand, Iranian military figures threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz to prevent the Gulf States from exporting oil as well.

- What is Washington's aim?
Washington, as its Foreign Minister Pompeo has said, aims to end all exemptions given to countries that are currently buying oil from Iran so that Iranian oil in high markets reaches zero, thereby depriving Tehran of its revenues.

A joint bank between Iraq, Iran and Syria

BAGHDAD / News
US Secretary of State Christopher Ford assistant told Bloomberg that the United States once again granted exemptions to allow Britain, China, France and Russia to continue to work with Iran in preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
The resolution means allowing these countries to pursue projects aimed at curbing Tehran's ability to produce a nuclear weapon.

Bloomberg said the administration would reduce the duration of exemptions to 90 days instead of 180 days.

Under the nuclear deal signed in 2015 with the six major powers, Iran has agreed to turn nuclear facilities in Arak and Fordo into a situation that makes it much more difficult to use them to produce fissile material for nuclear weapons.

US President Donald Trump's decision to suspend US exemptions from sanctions on eight major Iranian oil importers came into force on Friday.

On Friday, May 3, 2019, the eight countries face US sanctions if they continue to buy Iranian oil.

Observers point out that Iranian oil exports are going down to zero starting at dawn on Friday.

With the entry into force of the resolution, eight countries, including China, India, South Korea and Turkey, have already benefited from exemptions subject to US sanctions if they continue to import Iranian oil.

US sanctions have not only reflected economic aspects, but have created a rift in the relationship between the wings of the Iranian regime. On the one hand, Rowhani and his allies support conditional negotiations, while Iranian leader Ali Khamenei and his Revolutionary Guards have refused to make any concessions.
Washington's goal is to stop Iran's oil exports completely or zero and deprive Tehran of its main source of income.

US pressure on Iran has brought about the collapse of its economy. Its oil exports have fallen by 53 percent since its peak in May to 1.3 million a day. Tehran exports oil to countries that Washington has only exempted.

China alone imports more than 500,000 barrels per day of Iranian oil. India imports 405,000 barrels of oil from Iran and South Korea imports 285,000 barrels.

The six months that the United States has granted to a number of countries that buy Iranian oil have expired to exempt them from US sanctions against Tehran.
US President Donald Trump re-imposed the sanctions last year after he announced Washington's withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Iran, an agreement he says he wants to renegotiate.
Iranian leaders continue to challenge US sanctions and say they are determined to overcome them, but the impact of sanctions on life in Iran is clear.
The trend towards a serious economic recession
The Iranian economy has been severely affected by the sanctions imposed by the international community as a result of the country's nuclear program.
Iranian President Hassan Rowhani agreed in 2015 with the United States and five other international powers to curb Iran's nuclear activities in return for lifting sanctions.

Last Saturday, Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj called on US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to extend their sanctions waiver for Iranian crude oil imports after the 2 May deadline but didn't receive a response from Washington.

New Delhi (Sputnik) — India's External Affairs Ministry on Thursday said the country has drawn up a robust plan to compensate for the reduction in energy imports from Iran, adding that it is well prepared to deal with the situation.

"There will be additional supplies from other major oil producing countries based on robust plan which has been drawn up by the petroleum ministry. The aspects related to the amount of oil which will be imported by India from different countries are the matters of operational details," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said in a weekly media briefing.

Nevertheless, the spokesperson said the country will continue to engage the US on the matter.

The spokesperson, however, did not categorically mention whether the country will bring down its Iranian crude imports to zero as per the US sanctions.

"Whatever decision we take, it will the combination of different factors. Energy security is one of them. Commercial consideration will be number two and the third will be economic interests in mind," he added.

Sources told Sputnik that the US has said that India's "escrow account" used for Rupee-Rial trade cannot be operated after 2 May.

Earlier, India had an option to trade in its national currency to escape the sanctions.

During the wave of previous sanctions, India revived an arrangement of making payments via an account in the UCO Bank in India, which does not have international exposure and is not connected to SWIFT (Society for World Interbank Financial Telecommunication System).

In November 2018, the Trump administration issued temporary waivers to eight countries, including India, allowing them to purchase Iranian oil without the risk of being sanctioned for 180 days.

India is the second biggest importer of Iranian crude, only behind China. The country has reportedly limited its oil imports from the Islamic Republic from 452,000 down to 300,000 barrels per day to meet the conditions of the 180-day US waiver.

India is the world's third largest importer of crude oil, with over 60 per cent of its oil coming from the Middle East.

08:43 02.05.2019(updated 08:44 02.05.2019)

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Iranian mission to the United Nations said that the United States warned other UN member states that they should either breach the UNSC Resolution 2231, endorsing the Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the JCPOA, or face punishment.

"The U.S., in clear and flagrant violation of resolution 2231, has withdrawn from the JCPOA. The worse is that, the U.S., as a permanent seat holder in the Security Council, is brazenly threatening other UN Member States, either to violate that resolution or to face punishment. This is truly a destructive and hypocritical policy", the statement read.

The Iranian mission to the UN recalled that Tehran’s compliance with its commitments under the Iran nuclear deal, envisaging the removal of western Iran sanctions in exchange for Tehran maintaining the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, had been confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAE) 14 times.

It also dismissed claims that Iran’s missiles were designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons. The mission insisted that the Resolution 2231 did not restrict the activities related to the creation of conventional ballistic missiles.

"Instead of attempting to disseminate fabricated accusations and to exploit the UN Security Council to advance its mischievous policies against Iran, the U.S. authorities must act responsibly in accordance with their international obligations and to explain to the Council members that why their country is violating resolution 2231 and why it is forcing other States to do the same", the mission argued.

In a statement issued a day earlier, the mission said that an official from the US State Department held a visit to New York for calling on other UNSC members to hold Tehran accountable for the development and testing of ballistic missiles.

The United States has repeatedly called for tightening international restrictions against Iran in a bid to hinder the development of Tehran’s missile program, despite objections from the Islamic republic.

Moreover, last year, Washington withdrew from the JCPOA and reinstated its sanctions against Iran. China, France, Germany, Iran, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the European Union— the other signatories to the Iran nuclear deal — slammed Washington's withdrawal from the agreement and the reinstatement of sanctions, saying it threatened not only Iran but international security as well as countries and companies that continued to do business with Tehran.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The Iraqi government has not yet complied with US economic sanctions imposed against Iran despite its entry into force two days ago, MP Mohammed al-Baldawi said on Saturday (May 4, 2019).

Al-Baldawi pointed out that Iran is a neighbor that has supported Iraq greatly during its war with an oppressor and can not stand against it by committing to these false sanctions, noting that oil exports and trade exchange are still ongoing between Tehran and Baghdad and have not been cut or stopped until now.

For his part, the MP of the Fath Alliance Fadel Jaber, earlier, the government's move towards the option to abide by US economic sanctions against Iran as an economic suicide of the country, while calling for the government to take a formal position rejecting the sanctions immediately and quickly.

Yeah right. All we need to do is mine all Iranian ports at their mouth before they enter the Straits of Hormuz, by air. While also hitting their electrical grid and radar facilities with EMP's. And bombing all known air fields to prevent fly offs. While also hitting their planes that aren't flying. Send Warthogs and 35's in to take out armored assets that are mobile . All before any US troops even think about hitting the ground. Yada yada, just for starters.
